By default you can play by yourself but you only get half the experience arguably and the bots are not useful on difficulty modes higher than regular normal, plus the standard bots lack some of the abilities players are supposed to have,
The game's versus mode was the original concept, but they couldn't balance it properly so they split it into that and then the campaign mode. (AI director and the zombie horde has a massive presence in the campaign mode, while those elements take a backseat for the versus mode which emphasizes going head to head with the special infected).
There's a wide swath of Sourcemod plugins (custom scripting framework) that enhance the bots' abilities, fix most of their issues and allow you to play Versus mode by yourself with bots on both sides, and with the enhancements they can play all the modes fairly well like actual people. You can get through Standard Expert and Realism Advanced fairly reliably with modded bots outside of the scavenge finales, but it's a lot of work tracking down all the plugins and their dependencies, because they rely on custom frameworks within the Sourcemod framework to map memory offsets in the engine and take direct control of certain functions, and there are a lot of outdated and broken scripts to sift through from older versions.
I can't cover it all here, but look into it yourself.

There are simple mods to enable it, but you need the full assortment of Sourcemod plugins out there that enhance the bots' performance and abilities to make it play like a live match.
Recently played this again and it feels so much more jank and boring than it used to back in the day. Guess playing Vermintide for years kind of ruined this game for me.
one guy already mentioned sourcemod plugins as bots can be somewhat moronic on regular maps and really moronic on workshop meme maps, but if you're too lazy to setup sourcemod plugins to work then you can use this instead https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2279814689&searchtext=left+4+bots. I've found it works pretty well compared to other workshop bot improvement mods, but I imagine sourcemod is even better.
if you have even 1(one) friend or person who will tolerate you long enough to play through some campaigns, it will make it exponentially better as you'll have someone who can quickly and reliably get special infected off of you and protect/help you do events on more meme workshop maps. playing by yourself with AI on the valve maps or other standard workshop maps should be pretty fun, but if you're playing something like glubtastic then bots sometimes can't maneuver the map and you'll have to solo the entire campaign though these meme maps are far outnumbered by more regular maps.

The mods are so worthwhile, you can make the game just about anything, though most of the content leans 18+ Neon anime porn and memes. Still pretty fun though, like LSD as a game, you can turn the tank into a whopper meal that attacks you.
Im apparently the first person to ever mod the whole game though, all these videos are just one or two things, mine is a masterpiece of "what the hell"
I think its one of the best games I've ever played and yea its fun. Playing solo its not the best experience tho.. but still fun. If you need people to play with lmk.
