This was the biggest issue with Next Gen's Worf that DS9 fixed.
Worf's supposed to be a huge badass that never loses right? So when they introduce a new bad guy, he immediately beats the shit out of Worf.
The issue is we never see Worf be a huge badass on screen, so after a few times this happens, Worf just looks like a big pussy that can't win unless against simulated fights in the holodeck.

romulans were not a gene roddenberry invention. in fact, much of the franchise's greatest hits were invented by someone else because gene couldn't wrap his mind around the concept that "conflict = fun."

tabletop rpg company fasa lost it's license with star trek because they kept proposing products that emphasized combat and gene constantly vetoed them. furthermore, when fasa first got the license, they asked the star trek people for info on the franchise to help flesh out the product line and the star trek people just shrugged and said, "i dunno; we made it up as we went along. you invent something." so they did.

granted, the man towards the end of his life was on so many painkillers that he couldn't think straight. however, execs were so paranoid and afraid that fans wouldn't tune in to watch star trek unless they thought that he had signed off on everything that they kept crediting him with doing everything until it was blatantly obvious that he had lost it.

I love the irony of star trek, a show that pushed the boundaries and helped usher in our modern woke cultural movement became totally unacceptable by that same movement shortly after it rose to power and was pretty much canceled in it's original form.
Hoisted by it's own petard you could say.

      Anonymous

That's just the standard purity spiral of any movement like that. Because the goal is power, influence and domination in the guise of striving for a permanent solution, goalposts must move when that solution is actually reached. Nothing will ever be enough because when the job is done all their influence disappears.
That's also why some feminists like Sarkeesian never actually cared if they managed to change anything or not. All that ever mattered to her is the ability to exert her power and to make people do what she wants, at the moment. What it leads to is irrelevant.

Star Trek was just the Hassan Piker of its day, it didn't really believe the crap it was spouting in each episode but it was pandering to hipsters with no life experience for cash.

      Anonymous

star trek was canceled bc the ratings system at the time couldn't be parsed like it could today.
it wasn't overall popular but it was intensely popular with males 18-44 which is what advertisers usually salivate at.

there were mitigating factors depending upon who you talk to. sci-fi shows are more expensive than other shows of similar types and execs love to save money. also, gene was not known to be an easy guy to work with. less easy to work with = more easy to cancel the show and replace it iwth someone who knows the drill and gets in line.

in the end, it did as well as it could for it's time. had they known more readily that it was popular with the young guys, it would've lasted another 1-2 seasons b4 the # of episodes reached the point where execs would've pulled the plug anyway.

Bat'leths were obviously designed by someone with no concept of weaponry. Even if Klingons are way stronger that humans and could swing giant metal weapons around we'd struggle with they still wouldn't have made one that stupidly shaped.

      Anonymous

If you design alien weapons using correct "concepts of weaponry" you'll just end up with weapons that look like they were made by humans.

        Anonymous

That's fine if you apply the concepts of reasonable weaponry on weapons made for different types of aliens. The sangheili in Halo have different types of firearms because they have double-thumbed palms. It is still just a magnetic plasma accelerator like any sci-fi blaster, but its form factor is more suited for a specific humanoid alien as opposed to humans.

        Anonymous

I know it's in the service of showing off a sense of novelty for alien creatures but yeah sometimes it gets a bit silly when extremely humanoid aliens have incredibly un-ergonomic clothes or tools etc when their biomechanics would be basically the same as ours.

Star Trek Online has had them for over 12 years, they were in at release. They even added a bunch of shitty variants, on top of letting you get a replica Sword of Kahless.

There's PvP in STO but you'd be an idiot to do it. The only real limitation on melee is availability of the weapons when you're levelling, at max level it's pretty much an issue of finding a model you like and upgrading it how you want it.

      Anonymous

gene hated conflict and was always dragged, kicking and screaming, to put in more conflict. that's why the choreography always sucked bc no one invested in it.
also, fights are expensive to shoot and produce and 1960s tv was prudish. "the wild wild west" was a show that famously pushed the boundaries of violence (even having to defend itself in front of the us congress as a result) and it is outright prudish compared to today's tv.
