Is Oblivion just nostalgia or is it worth playing?

I've played Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Skyrim so far. So far, my favorite has been Morrowind. And every time I look at Oblivion, it just seems so boring, uninspired, and removed too many features from Morrowind. Is this game actually worth trying?

It's a slightly more dated Skyrim with better quests.
If you think Skyrim was worth playing Oblivion is worth playing most certainly.

The setting is very generic on the surface, but most of the quests in Oblivion are some of the best in the entire Elder Scrolls series. Play with a few mods to fix leveling and graphics. Level scaling in Oblivion is fricked.

Yeah, the quests and atmosphere are some of the best in the series.

Oblivion is a lot of fun.
    HOWEVER!
I maintain that it's an average game that could be good. Not great, but good.
I recommend the following mods so your experience isn't dog shit.
Unofficial Oblivion Patch (and the DLC patches)
    Oblivion Scaling Unclusterfricked
    Oblivion Character Overhaul
ENBoost (so your game stops crashing from mods installed)
You'll need Blockhead and Oblivion Script Extender for these to work.
It's not much, but it's worth it to play a fun and varied although janky game

I got the impression that oblivion's mod scene died the day Skyrim released. My last Morrowind playthrough included Tamriel Rebuilt, but it doesn't seem like there's anything comparable for Oblivion. I think I was able to stomach Skyrim because it's just got a more distinct setting (until Nordic shit was driven into the ground by every other studio post Skyrim.

Those mods work with the current steam version that includes DLC. A lot of the just work but support is starting to fall off. So if there are bugs in the future or compatibility issues you may run into problems but that could be years off if at all

It kinda did, skyrim's mod scene really can't be beat. Oblivions mod scene is mostly gameplay improvements and bugfixes- which is fine imo since you get to spend more time playing and less time fricking around with mods. Its not perfect, but it's 100% worth a single playthrough, give it a shot anon

Skyrim's setting is just some cosmetic differences to make it look like they didn't shamelessly imitate game of thrones

Oblivion have too much limitation for modding, that's why the only things you'll find in oblivion modding is mostly bugfixes and several coomer and meme mods. Also, the distance between oblivion release and skyrim is only 5 years apart and Skyrim is easily to be modded than oblivion.
Maybe bethsoft secretly wants to see how far people will mod their game, skyrim modding is pretty much unbeatable at this point. A homie made a fricking framework specialized for coom mod is unbelievable, someone out there dedicating their time and skill to mod skyrim for years, etc. Skyrim have more than decade for its modding scene alone, and I dont even think TES6 will able to 'dethrone' skyrim modding scene by the time that game is comes out.

Skyrim modding and oblivion modding are almost identical. In fact skyrim was a little slower to start due to a work around needing to be implemented to deal with limited animation slots. The reason that skyrim has more mods is simply because its graphics engine is better and the included assets are higher fidelity.

Personally I consider Oblivion to be noticeably better than Skyrim, in terms of overall gameplay. It feels much more like a true RPG and has many more interesting questlines. Slap some basic gfx and bugfix mods on and it's a great time.
An Oblivion remade with current gen visuals, more varied combat, and better/no level scaling is a dream of mine

Mostly nostalgia, there's a couple decent quests and the shivering isles is unironically pretty good but overall it's the weakest "modern" TES game by no small margin.

I have no idea. I used Oblivion XP, but that was already an old ass mod when I last played the game ten years ago.

probably the easiest way to unfrick progression is get the mod that lets you +5 any attribute except luck when leveling so you don't have to do autistic minmaxing. i'd get the quest award leveler mod too so you aren't punished for doing fun quests with great rewards too early. beyond that there are some massive overhaul mods like FCOM or OOO that fix the wacky level scaling of enemies, but i'll be fricked if i sit down to go through the install process of that shit again.

OOO doesn't actually fix the level scaling, it just adds a bunch of static leveled content. That said, I recommend it, Mart's Monster Mod, and Better Cities and Landscapes, which collectively dramatically increase the variety and scale of the game without being too distracting.

If you liked Skyrim, Oblivion is Skyrim but uglier and with a bit more gameplay freedom. As such, it's pretty shit. But, there IS one element that makes Oblivion absolutely worth a play through and that's that it's fricking funny. It's like Lord of the Rings as presented by Monty Python. Unlike Skyrim, which generally tries to take itself pretty seriously, Oblivion absolutely loves to make fools of its characters and then murder them in completely unceremonious ways. Almost every quest is predicated on everyone involved being absolutely moronic, and the writers were very much aware of this fact. There is an exception to this rule, namely the main quest, but it's not actually that long and it's not like you even have to do it.

      >namely the main quest, but it's not actually that long and it's not like you even have to do it.
Right now I'm playing through as a wandering Paladin, snuffing out evil and daedra and other unholy monsters, and the world is at it's most comfy when you're not being bombarded with oblivion gates
I picked up the amulet and fricked off to do Knights of the Nine and fight undead

    there's something odd with it
for example, the way the camera zooms in when talking to an npc like in vampire the masquerade bloodlines looks uncanny because the models are stiff and unnatural

I've been playing vanilla Oblivion and having a blast, some tips I have:
right before you exit the tutorial sewers make a hardsave, you can skip the tutorial in future playthroughs by doing this
    >save the main quest for absolutely last, never go to kvatch until you are ready to finish up your playthrough
    >do the shivering isles and knights of the nine asap for cool armor and lore
    >do all daedra, guild and side quests, this is where the game shines the most
    >dont get too hung up on exploring every landmark you find, nine times out of ten a guild or side quest will tell you to go there anyway
    >make sure to level END/STR as much as possible as fast as possible if you are a melee build
    >horses are fricking useless with awkward controls, and slower then running after a certain point - dont even bother with them

      >doing shivering isles early on
Frick no, Black. Save this shit until the main quest is out of the way.

Horses are useless until you can make your own spells. Then you can make spells that increase speed on touch, which is enormously effective on horses due to their high base speed.

This is the worst post I've ever seen
      >never go to kvatch until you are ready to finish up your playthrough
Kvatch is horrible on higher levels and you miss out on sigil stones and quests by not activating the gates
      >do the shivering isles and knights of the nine asap
The rewards for Shivering Isles are leveled and are designed to be obtained at level 30+. Any earlier than that, and they're shit. The KOTN gear can be releveled by putting it back on the pedestal, but saving the world is the first thing you should do at level 1.
      >make sure to level END/STR as much as possible as fast as possible if you are a melee build
Every class should lvl END asap since it increases your health upon leveling up. The more endurance you have for each level, the better.
are fricking useless with awkward controls, and slower then running after a certain point - dont even bother with them
Horses are great early-mid game and late game with spells like

Horses are useless until you can make your own spells. Then you can make spells that increase speed on touch, which is enormously effective on horses due to their high base speed.

Morrowind - Cool world, decent quests, combat comparable to watching paint dry
Oblivion - decent world, best quests, decent combat
Skyrim - completely shit world, worst quests, decent combat

Oblivion has its flaws, but it doesn't fail as significantly in any one aspect as the others in the series.

It's the best TES game. It has the best quests, music, and atmosphere of the series. The leveling system can get moronic, but it isn't too bad if you level your character properly.
