Yes. Linus Torvalds himself uses one.

Intel onboard anything is the only good GPU on Linux due to a real and capable no-bullshit FLOSS driver. Anything else is a Black personlicious blob in one way or another. But of course your definition of light gaming is unknown at this point.

      Intel iGPUs need blobs too.

        Anonymous

They only improve power management, they are not needed for video acceleration, so you can completely omit the blobs with almost no consequences on desktop: https://h-node.org/videocards/view/en/2254/Iris-Xe-Graphics/1/1/undef/undef/undef/undef/video-card-works/Xe
Now, I believe the situation with Arc-based discrete GPUs is different and those actually need blobs for 3D acceleration, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Windows 7 refugee here, switched to Mint, surprisingly, gaming is one of the things that Linux is *less* a PITA than I expected. WINE and Proton are really great!
But hey, try getting a GTK-based file browser to list/collate files like it does on Windows. On the plus side, I now know how locales work on Linux, on the down-side, it won't ever do it correctly, because of GTK's "intelligent" number sorter that WILL put "00_folder" BEFORE "__folder" despite this being non-conformant with LC_COLLATE's specifications.
The default ISO 14651 LC_COLLATE scheme prioritizes "$folder" before "0folder" which ls will correctly display and GTK won't, so I can guarantee that it wasn't even me who fricked up customizing the collation scheme.

I run an RX580X on Linux Mint at 1080p, performance is equal (if not better) than on Windows.

How cheap are you getting it? You can pick up MI25s (basically Vega FE but you have to add your own fan) for like $60-70 on eBay.

I would assume OP wants to be able to output to a display

        Anonymous

MI25 has a mini displayport, you just need a $5 adapter to DVI or HDMI.

huh, didn't know that, figured all of the datacenter 'accelerator' cards had no display outputs

It's for troubleshooting or something, it's hidden behind the rear cover so you have to clip out two of the vent slats to expose it.

Also, an important note that I had forgotten about is that you need to flash it to a WX9100 BIOS to make the mDP work. From what I can tell, cards with 2 8-pin power connectors can be flashed with software, but for the 6+8-pin cards you need to pick up a CH341A (with clip!) for about $10. It has two BIOS chips, but only the one that's easy to get the clip onto needs to be flashed.

don't you need to flash a modified vbios to make it work on non server motherboards

How light are we talking? Better get a GTX 750 Ti for 30 bucks if you don't want to play the latest AAA games. It's much cheaper and doesn't need a power connector.

it's worth the extra grunt though, I have both and the RX580 can brute-force its way when using Proton where the 750ti may struggle already with games that should be capable to run on Windows like Project Zomboid

I mean, if you could find it under $70, 4GB RX 550 is also a good card. You should only buy the RX 6600 or RX 580 if you want to play AAA titles or heavier indie games though.

If you want to go that light you might as well get a ryzen 5600g, it has an integrated gpu stronger than the 750ti.

this, 4600g user here and I just sold off my nvidia 3060 12gb after getting sick of nvidias shit on linux.
you know what shocked me? how all the games I actually like (indie titles, old rts games and emulators) run perfectly fine on the renoir igpu. things a little fricking monster and its silent with a noctua and the whole system runs on next to no power.
I also have to shout out the fact you can decide your vram in the bios, I can set mine to 2gb 4gb 8 gb and 16gb. pretty fricking cool!

If OP just wants to do light gaming, pre-owned GT 1030 is the best way to go. It's $50, powerful enough to get 70-80 fps average on GTA V, and maxes out at 30W.

nta but the 580 consumes more power, if the gaming is light enough the extra performance is not worth it over the power consumption

Black person are you for real? Let’s say light gaming is 8 hours per week. And 23 cents/kWh. If the card maxed out for all 8 hours that would be 34 cents per week. Or $18 per year. You need to save 29 cents per week?

Depends on your definition of light, it can handle titles that released around the same time at mid-high settings, more than enough. If by light you mean things like Stardew valley and Terraria, it's overkill, I have an 8th gen i5 laptop and integrated graphics that runs them just fine

do most games run on linux now? i havent tried it in like 7+ years. back then we had to hack shit together with wine to get them to even start

      >i havent tried it in like 7+ years
A lot has changed since then, however the whole Linux gaming scene is basically cornered by Valve because they were the only company who gave a shit and didn't expect the customers to set up Wine or fix the dependency hell for native games by themselves.

RX470, 480, 570, and 580 are all more than fine for light or moderate gaming. (used $50-$100)
RX 5600 XT and RX 6600 are great for 1080p as well. (used $100-$150, new $200)

yes, I have the 8gig variant and it works decently. Only issue is the lack of CUDA/ROCm (for newer kenels) to do AI stuff.

it can handle cyberpunk at playable fps.
for me it was anywhere between 25-75fps due to cpu bottleneck, i7 6700
you can expect to run anything that can be considered light

  22. 10 months ago
    Anonymous

Yes. I use an RX470 and it's slow for most graphically intensive games (e.g. cyberpunk) but for more reasonable games like CS:GO it's very good. With an RX580 you might even be able to get playable framerates in newer titles.

Yes, would work well for that.

It's a very capable card even nowadays, I use an RX 480 myself and I'm very happy with it, I haven't found a game that I wouldn't be able to play with it. Graphics settings sometimes have to be lowered to get a decent framerate, but I don't mind that.
