fighting games suck
yes
In his own weird way yes. That's just how fighters work though, there's a type of masochism there where you have to learn to accept being combo'd and learn from the situation so you don't get put into it again. It's part of the learning process and part of getting good. It's your own fault for being combod, its your fault you got hit, its your fault for not knowing the matchup or the character you fight. It doesn't make it nice, or even fair, but its still your own fault.
Thats why smash is nice though because there's a lot more footsies to be played, because you have Directional influence, and because there's a much deeper physical game to be discovered because you're not so restricted like traditional fighters.
t.been playing competitive fighters+competitive smash since 2000, not just some armchair pussy with a pseudo intellectual analysis who browses twitch all day.
are there any non-combo based fighting games for a complete talentless sucker that have something resembling a single player?
Soul Calibur and Tekken can be played very casually, they do have combos but Soul calibur in specific lets you get out of them easier.
when the hero DLC came out we used to play the fights as it was a turn based game, it was dumb as frick but it was fun
Oh boy are there, Netherrealm studios makes games exclusively for you!
Brawl Royale.
>are there any non-combo based fighting games
Samurai Shodown
>for a complete talentless sucker that have something resembling a single player?
Namco and Netherrealms games
why should I care what a woman has to say about fighting games?
FGC games are intentionally designed poorly because their communities won't buy any game they can't gatekeep with elitism.
Anons, hear me out
turn-based fightan
it exists and it's fricking sick
Videos?
just look at the trailer, the cool thing is after you finish playing you can playback the entire game and it looks like some stick figure flash animation in the mid 2000s
That does look fricking cool as hell.
But the control also looks autistic and gonna be hard to navigate around.
It's even more gay than regular fightan because you have every reason to play like a pussy and never attack, the developer kept pushing changes to try changing this like free attacks (you can make most attacks not lock you into committing them twice before you have to recharge by damaging the enemy, meaning that if you miss and it's the opponent's turn you can immediately do something else instead), whiff canceling consuming more burst, backwards movement taking more frames, dodge getting nerfed (but recently got buffed to avoid projectiles) and so on, and it's still better to just give the ol' fluoride stare at the enemy or move backwards doing nothing hoping that he'll frick up an action and give you an opening.
Pokemon
Smash is party game
Yes. That's why Smash is the highest sold fighting game and creates more hype and views than all the games in the FGC.
absolutely
my middle brother practices street fighter all day long, me and my oldest brother can no longer play with him anymore. I really do miss that, all three of us used to play marvel vs capcom back in the day.
That's weirdly sad.
It is sad, me and my oldest brother frequently talk about the middle brother's obsession with the game. I'm disappointed that he never wants to play casual 2 player games like mario kart or smash bros anymore. It sucks.
This happened to my brother too. He's been completely consumed by Melee, Tekken 7 and League of Legends.
No he is wrong I think, not many games have touch of death combos it’s just that non Smash fighting games have more room for skill expression so if you are bad you get your ass beat hard and it “feels” like you were combod to death
I think hes mostly speaking from experience, he's actually quite good at traditional fighters, thats what lead him to create the premise for Smash bros and pitch it to Nintendo in the first place. he's talked about it in the past. I forgot which he plays, i think it was KOF or Garou.
Basically Sakurai was playing KoF at an arcade when a stranger joined him on the other side. He was landing all of his moves cleanly and practically wiping the floor with his opponent, but he realized something was off when the opponent became more unresponsive. He then realized his opponent was just a regular couple, and he was fighting the girlfriend. He said he felt really bad and regretted it ever since.
>samurai bullies special needs person at arcade
to him that match of KoF was the most important thing in the world
but to that couple, it was Tuesday
what
said is right, he once told us that in an arcade he pretty much combo'd a couple that were there to have fun, which then left angry because they wasted their time waiting for their turn only to do nothing.
He probably wasn’t hitting them with true combos though. A lot of times people think they got combod to death when they got hit with 3-4 separate combos in a short period of time
>Hits you with a four way mixup ToD
Foolishness
yes
neutral game>shitty combo strings
What is burst, combo breaker, DI and Reduce
Some combo strings can be really fricking long and usually the balance is just to make it do less or scale it hard, which just means you get caught in and have to sit through it like 6 times in a single round. DBFZ can be like that sometimes. But frick having to sit through an infinite is where it really becomes tiring
He is correct but Smash fell into the exact same trap, playing someone thats experienced with the game and you will get destroyed without knowing what the hell is going on. Completely unlike something like Mario Kart, where you can see exactly what your meant to be doing its just practice that will help you get caught up. Smash despite it being a party game is completely impenetrable to someone brand new.
I think this is more a problem of them giving up on balance patches than a design philosophy thing, though.
>but Smash fell into the exact same trap, playing someone thats experienced with the game
you can say that for literaly anything, the biggest difference is that Smash is more noob/casual friendly.
>but Smash fell into the exact same trap
Maybe melee did but Ultimate is very casual friendly.
Items exist for a reason.
what's funny is melee did it completely by accident
you should get rewarded for being able to pull off combos, but one or two combos should not win you the round
combos should take off 20% of your life, max
Combos are a way to do damage, not win a set. Obviously, you want to do the most damage possible at any given situation, but saying that not knowing how to perform the most optimal combo renders strategy as useless is looking a fighting games as punch and kick simulators. Knowing how to execute a combo gets technical skill, but knowing how to avoid getting hit and how to punish is where the stagey in fighting games lie. Hackurai dooes not understand this idea.
He's saying that a new player has no ability to learn those skills, when they just get fricking destroyed.
Unfortunately, yeah. I wish my friends liked fighting games as much as I do. I do like Smash Bros. at least.
The thing about fighting games is that they were designed with the idea you'd be fighting a friend at an arcade; somebody you'd just be having a good time with. If your friend knew you were struggling, they'd probably notice and hold back. Now that fighting games are online, the trouble is you're usually matched up against a stranger who doesn't give two fricks about you; they're just there to beat you down, get their ranking points or whatever, and then leave. This shit is why fighting games have a bad reputation for being inaccessible these days.
>tekken arcades are known for long sets where people play until someone ranks down
>tekken online is full of one-and-down matches
I want to see the opposite. Where getting touched once is the kiss of death and you're combo'd forever in infinites that defy imagination. A game where every character is like Raoh from Hokuto no Ken.
Marvel vs. Capcom.
Skullgirls.
Every stray hit fricking combos, if you know your way around the infinite prevention system you get away with obscene robberies.
its called marvel vs capcom
its fricking dead
> I want to see the opposite. Where getting touched once is the kiss of death
no long combos though
>Sakurai claims fighting games require no skill, just memorizing combos
A take so fricking hot that no one would take him seriously if he wasn't a game director.
And he's 100% correct
Sakurai never shipped a good game, so no, he's wrong.
Well an anti-combo system only really works in Smash because it has other unique systems to make up for it. A game has to have depth somehow to be any good and depth means multiple layers of mechanics and combos can be one of those layers. Basically if you add something like platforming and ring outs to the game sure you can get rid of combos because the depth comes from those things instead. But if you were to just remove combos from Street Fighter for example (or alternatively remove platforming and ring outs from Smash) it would only remove depth from those games and make them really boring.
It's not like combos are inherently a bad mechanic. In fact they are a very efficient and powerful mecahnic. It's a simple idea yet it does a lot of heavy lifting for the depth of the game. On a surface level combos reward skill which is a good enough reason to put a mechanic in any game but they actually do much more than that. They expand the design space of the game in a lot of ways and create more situational play. So basically it's just wrong to say combos remove strategy from a game they almost universally add more. That doesn't mean they should be added to every game because then every game would feel the same but it's always an option depending on the kind of game you're trying to make.
He's right about combos but the strategy is still there. The combo route, the position at the screen, how you convert the combo are all part of a greater strategy. Do you want the corner carry or end it with a move that gives better oki but less damage? If the game had no combos the dude that just sat down at the cabinet would STILL lose to the other dude regardless of combos. Look at Tekken, the people that were good at the game would basically teleport out of the mess by just backdashing and sidestepping their way out.
worshiping israelites is only going to give you more strife
Why does he always look like he came straight out of a 60's rock band?
he doesn't know a single thing about fighting games.
Smash is fun tho
>as more fighting games became combo-focused, the less room there was for strategy
Sakura low key admitting he does not play fighting games other than smash
he isn't going to join your discord to play your totally alive games
That doesn't invalidate what I said
