If you can't see beyond the veil of reality, don't bother playing this.

The game takes too much from literary works, art, music, religion and history, that if you don't have the knowledge of what they are, their meaning and story behind them, you will struggle to understand a lot of the concept SIGNALIS presents.

you're replying to a lame copypasta but in some ways it is true

the king in yellow heavily features a lily which is represented in the artifact ending and understanding the king in yellow does actually yield some meaning for signalis, there are some general lovecraft references

        for art you have this

There is not just the king in yellow

and the island paintings constantly shown to you, plus there are visual references to stuff like evangelion

musically there's a bunch of classical used to evoke specific feelings, i can't say much more here except to go play the game and pay attention to what songs play where

i don't think you absolutely NEED to know any of this shit to mostly grasp signalis but it's not wrong to say that it's there and does serve a function

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Signalis. The metanarrative is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of tarot reading most of the cycle shifts will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Adler's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Stirner's works, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these synchronizations, to realise that they're not just personal- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Signalis truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the irony in Ara's phenomenological catchphrase "What a joke!," which itself is a cryptic reference to Husserl's Analysis of the Inner Time-Consciousness. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Yuria Stern's genius wit unfolds itself on their emulated CRT screens. What fools.. how I pity them.

            >that VN
The most unforgettable horror porn game I've ever played. No other game had a bunch of elementary schoolers gangbang a teenage girl against a wall. And the teenage girl loved it. No other game I've played had a 17 year old bishonen guy drink a 14 year old girl's piss and chase her down the hall to rape her, only to wind up getting anally raped by a 32 year old fat man. I still remember the scene where a 16-17 girl was hiding under a bed as her same age best friend was having sex with that same 32 year old fat guy on top. She heard every moan, bed shake and sound. In the wrong end she was discovered under the bed by her friend and made to join. A most terrifying scene was when an unwilling girl relives another girl's sex memories. The girl in the memory consented but the reliving girl didn't. It didn't matter that she was mentally screaming, her body in the memory did all the motions and actions as in history. It's like mind control rape except the victim was fully aware. Another scene the same girl and a friend were almost raped in a magic sex ritual, saved by the girl's older sister, and the backlash made the older sister want to rape her younger sister and friend.

The e-girl in this pic is freakishly lewd and once disguised herself as a teenage girl, fricked a boy until he nearly came, transformed back saying
            >You thought you were having sex with a highschooler weren't you? I'm an elementary schooler all along!
And leglocks that boy, forcing him to cum inside her unprotected, when he screams in fear upon learning this. This isn't even getting into the tentacles, the gay sex, the lesbian sex, the incest, the sequel's mother/daughter lesbian scene, etc. The first chapter alone contains lots of lesbian sex scenes with an unavoidable girl jerking off in the bathroom. Truly horror is intrinsically connected with sexuality.

I just hated that they made the enemies respawn. I know there's supposed to happen in that genre of game. But I haven't played that genre before. So ruining my play through by wasting ammo was just too much. I'm not going back and replaying the first part of the game again.
    >you get weapons but you shouldn't use them lmao
I hate this trope. If you're going to do it then please signal stronger to the player that it's a bad idea to engage in combat.

      Anonymous

it takes like 2-3 bullets to down a common enemy on standard difficulty and if they get back up it's 1-2 more, you are swimming in ammo most of the time and only near the end of the game does it start to get tighter if you weren't thorough, plus burning bodies is very explicitly taught to you

it's fine to not be used to this kind of game and not enjoy it, but saying you "shouldn't use weapons" betrays how completely ignorant you are

        Anonymous

If the enemies respawn once why not again and again? It's not explained. They just respawn well after you get the gun and go through some levels. I was dropping every zombie I saw and once the respawns started I was just about done. I'd already used up a lot of ammo on the zombies and that boss.

As far as I know the enemies perpetually respawn.

they perpetually respawn if you constantly have shit routing and retread the same rooms while walking over their bodies, sure

I completed it 3 times (pirated, hard mode, easy to get the secret ending) and while I enjoy the vibe, overall I hate it as a game. They got some cool mechanic, but if you play it as someone who is into horror games you wouldn’t get a single damn clue what the frick is going on. You need to know some lovecraft or played silent hill 2 for the story to make sense. Even then, silent hill 2 managed to give off the same meaning with less convoluted plot.

God I really hate playing super good and conservatively, only for the game to give me bad ending because PLAYTIME INFLUENCE ENDING. The whole game felt like an art piece that intellectuals at the back of the class talk.

it's a cool changeup from relying on a map, and the area layout is basic enough that it's not difficult to navigate

even if it didn't have a story justification it would still not be a big deal and be kind of cool

I think they were trying to alter the navigational challenge of the game with each map
      >map 1 - small and basic, get used to how the game works
      >map 2 - bigger and more complex but nothing too crazy
      >map 3 - multilevel and complex, has plethora of story items scattered all around to put your inventory management to the test
      >map 4 - no minimap this time, frick you
      >map 5 - back to basics, but this time various pathways will block themselves as you progress forcing you to adjust your routes on the fly

As I understand what you see is mostly materialized projection of Ariane's delirium in her agony in malfunctioning cryostasis bed. She was always a depressed person since her school years and the tone of the whole world we seem might be just her personal depressive cynical lens. It's impossible to even say how dysfunctional the regime is. In her dreams she might view Star and Scorch units as brutal oppressors of a ruthless socialist state who torture people and put them in cages, but maybe it's just her fantasies of a totalitarian regime. Very meta in a sense that at the same time this is the author's view on real life's soviet block countries.

a (bladerunner like) copy of the empress of mankind gets sent to a suicide mission to find a planet to colonize alongside her other copy (of someone else, everybody in the game is a copy) because she got told it was either this or the gullaw and are only told about this 2 years in with a note that says "lol you should prolly tell your robot maid to off you bro"
they had bonded over the course of the 2 years so the maid couldn't do it. the empress is left to rot in cryostasis as radiation slowly kills her and the maid dies off in some corner of the ship

something something they might've crashed into an eldrich being who gave the copy of the empress the power to unconciously rewrite reality and everyone in it, every copy of the maid is now getting overwritten by HER maid who is now on a pointless mission to try and find her to remember and fulfill her promise (to euthanize her)

1920s space Germany creates androids copied from the physical/mental qualities of someone. In this case the main character is a ranger, loner type. Your steward/lower is an female explorer who is the person you're trying to save. What happens after that depends entirely on how much in-lore stuff you want to believe. Gameplay is classic RE mixed with mgs 1. Story is extremely surreal with shiploads of schizo shit. There are lots of cute animu girls and there is some love shit between 2 but that is like 1% of your playtime. Story is not anime homosexualry, its just the art. Artstyle is obviously very strong and heavily blame! influenced. Only play it if you like classic RE gameplay.

I think the misery porn aspect is more attractive than the tragic lesbian love story. The fanbase talks more about depression and how the game wrecked them emotionally than the character relationships.
The game doesn't even put emphasis on the "forbidden" part of their love, just the tragedy of their bitter end. Ackshually, with disproportionately large number of female replicas in the setting, lesbian relationships should be an important topic of replica social studies. We could even doubt that it is forbidden.

I don't care if the developers are leftists, I liked the game for it's visual design, presentation and old school Resident Evil gameplay. I like old ones to Code Veronica better than RE4 and what followed it.
The story at times felt a little too pretentious and on the nose, and sad for the sake of being sad. It didn't help with my depression mood unlike what fanbase of this game keeps saying, but it was the same with Dark Souls series. When I'm depressed I don't want to wallow in my depression, I want to see wholesome stuff, not misery porn. But it more of a nitpick in regards of this game, overall it was great.

I'd like to play more in this setting with this style of storytelling just for the futuristic space GDR. Rose Engine could show so much if they will ever return to this universe. There is an interplanetary war going on. There is a blockade and orbital bombing.

That's what makes it interesting though. That you only get glimpses of this world second-hand, through Elster's template memories, lore documents, propaganda posters, etc. and that contrasts with the more mundane(relatively speaking) human elements. People bored and miserable in a mining facility, slowly losing hope. The inanities of bureaucracy. People falling in love.

If you just got big ass lore dumps it'd be as blase as Warhammer.

It's actually all in her head? I thought those special gestalt have a power to warp reality.

People forget about Alina Seo every single time I see these threads.
Ariane has been stuck dying of radiation poisoning in her cryopod and polluting S-23 Sierpinski with her bioresonance, each ending is a canonical continuation of the cycle, except maybe Artifact. All the Gestalt women on the planet were turning into Ariane and all the Replikas were turning into LSTR. This explains the elevator full of dead LSTRs, the dead LSTR in the fakeout ending with the armor plating, FLKR and Ariane sharing a theme, why the last few layers are made of tumors, and why ADLR was losing his shit. By the time the game takes place it's assumed there have been about 3000 cycles since it began, and god knows how many years of Ariane rotting in the Penrose.

          Anonymous

          >and why ADLR was losing his shit.
It's because of the knife, anon. Every single time someone gets a knife in the eye, they end up having knowledge of what is going on. The only ending where Elster doesn't remember the promise, is the one where she doesn't have a blade embedded into her eye socket.
Similarly, where Adler has a knife in his eye, he suddenly knows what is going on at an intimate depth. To the extent he suddenly casts off his human appearance. The "I wear no mask" line even makes it blatantly obvious that he is deeply involved in the cycles themselves, not just as a victim, but almost certainly as a guardian of its functions. He even physically guards the threshold, to make it even more blatant and concrete.

It's actually all in her head? I thought those special gestalt have a power to warp reality.

My theory is that Ariane indeed warps the reality and converts real objects and people into shapes of her dream

      >What did Adler even *do*?
Unclear, but he has some sort of a villainous theme about him. Maybe because she assumes that all men are evil. He prevents Elster to fulfill her mission for some reason.

      >Why the frick are the Replikants zombies?
Like most sociophobic persons who was bullied in school, she is egocentric. The rest of the people are like mindless zombies to her, they have no personalities and no feelings.

      >Why are some NPCs not zombies?
Maybe it has something with their will power and moral character. Maybe Ariane likes these particular ones. The Storch and Star NPCs you meet don't act like buttholes despite being described as ones in the documents.

      >Why are all the Gestalts dead?
Ariane is a gestalt. That's what awaits her and that's what she wants. The "disease" kills gestalts faster than replicas, and the same happened with Ariane and Elster aboard the Penrose.

So basically the entire plot is that a psychic gets sent into space on a doomed 'exploration' mission with her cloned girlfriend, they get radiation poisoning and she gets put into stasis while the GF dies, then some sort of alien artifact gets unearthed which the psychic links with from deep space in order to ascend to Godhood? And the process of it involves putting all reality through a cosmic wringer and making everyone experience living Hell several times over?

      Anonymous

      >with her cloned girlfriend
Technically she's a human brain (Isa Itou imo.) put into a robot body, where her brain's "patterns" were through psychic space magic replaced by those of a blueprint pattern based on a soldier on Vineta (the flashbacks we see from there). She became Ariane's girlfriend, because Ariane basically broke Elster's programming by subjecting her to all her destabilizing triggers by accident, because Ariane never bothered reading the user manual.
      > they get radiation poisoning and she gets put into stasis while the GF dies
Yeah, probably. But Ariane most likely died instead of being killed by Elster (the Promise) because she didn't bother reading the user manual and Elster ended up breaking down. That's why in the endings where Elster has knowledge (signified by one destroyed eye, like Odin, and Adler for that matter) Ariane is a molten pile of flesh.
then some sort of alien artifact gets unearthed which the psychic links with from deep space in order to ascend to Godhood? And the process of it involves putting all reality through a cosmic wringer and making everyone experience living Hell several times over?
There is literally no way to tell whether anything that happens on Sierpinski is real, or if what's happening is the memories and essence of Elster being blended together with Ariane's psychic resonance to create a personal dying hell of their own making. The symbolism is what matters any way, not whether the plot's content is "real" or not.
Elster is breaking down and trying to cope with being the unholy amalgam of three different "people", Ariane is fricking dead, and there's nothing left to do.

    > The game has cryptic nonsensical story where you never know what is real and what is not
    > A year later there is nothing to discuss, everything that could be said, analyzed and theorized was already done

This is what you get when you write characters and organizations who are barely speak and do anything. No point in discussing motivations, actions and what-ifs. The only thing you can do is make interpretations about the vague exposition of things that happened. With so much bizarre cryptic stuff in this game you'd think it will be deep, but it really isn't. Even uninspired simplistic shit like Fallout 4 and Cyberpunk 2077 had more things going about them, more things to discuss than this game.
There is no point asking questions like
    >Why replicas turned into zombies?
Because there is no causation, crisis or conflict, even a vague one provided by the story. The best you could say is "It's in her head duh", or "she warped the reality with her bioresonance magic duh". The only conflict in the story is that Elster had to plow or run through all these monsters and open all doors to get to the ending.

      >The game has cryptic nonsensical story where you never know what is real and what is not
The base of the story is in the symbolism, not whether it's real or not.
      >A year later there is nothing to discuss, everything that could be said, analyzed and theorized was already done
You're too concrete of a person to appreciate it, that's your problem. If you don't like mindlessly playing around with the useless ideas of Signalis, it's not a game meant for you.

I'd love to delve deep into abstract ideas, but there is there is not much to discuss. The friendship/love between Ariane and Elster, their tragic fate and the promise. The bioresonance is basically described as "don't ask, it's magic".
In Silent Hill and Resident Evil there were other characters with distinct personalities and motivations. Here the only well written character is Ariane, but her childhood and life on Rotfront is just a peculiar backdrop for the story. All the characters you meet just say "the shit's fricked, and I'm fricked, kthnxbye.", and you're not even supposed to pay much attention to them for the good ending. Except Isa as a bonus, but she is there, again, just to complement Ariane, because she was important to her because of her school years. Or she is even another projection of dying Ariane.
I'm not hating on the game, I like it, I just want more.

But what if she's the body our Elster is "built" on? There's the whole
          >chasing after a woman and getting stabbed in the eye thing going on between the three of them
          Vineta engineer - Alina Seo
          Isa - Erika
          Elster - Ariane
which thematically would fit that being the case.
Never mind that we see flashbacks from Isa's perspective, as if we were going through Elster's personality degradation and gaining access to memories of the brain we're using. Isa also did the whole blood ritual over the Signalis tesseract, which might suggest a reason for why the plot happened in the first place.

I'll even argue that the Rotfront past we see is Isa's past, not Ariane's.
It's Elster who breaks apart and becomes transmitted as a signal at the start of the game, after all.

            Great, it makes sense.
To be honest, Isa's agency in this, and her ritual is very confusing to me. It was more comfortable for me to think about The King in Yellow just as book Ariane read in her teenage years and thus deeply affected her, caught her imagination, and not some actual unexplained lovecraftian horror that invaded this world and affected everything, like it's a Dead Space game.
Isa is dead by the start of the story though. As always, it is much easier to interpret everything as Ariane's bioresonance superpowers to warp and recycle everything.

I don't know if the game is good. The female forms are good.

The only thing I know is that the development team should create a GNU Window Manager based in the GUI of this game because is cool as frick. Like i3 or AwesomeWM. That would be a dream.

Alina Seo is the person Elster thinks she's looking for in the first 2/3 of the game.
Ariane Yeong is the person she's actually looking for. Alina looks just like her except Ariane is an albino and their connection is unclear, though some theorize that Alina is Elster's brain donor's lover.
Isolde/Isa Itou was a friend/classmate of Ariane's who is looking for her sister Erika throughout the game but turns out they were both already long dead by the time the events of the game happen.

        >some theorize that Alina is Elster's brain donor's lover.
Ariane found a photograph of Alina in a soldier's uniform and thought how she looks like her and how cool she looks. Why didn't Ariane join the military though? I don't remember if the game explains it. As I understand she only had the options of the mining gulag and the suicide exploration mission. Which is bleak as frick even for a socialist state, but that is to be expected in a dystopian setting I guess.

Ariane already served a term in the military, as a comms officer or some shit. Then the state required her to stop being a NEET and either get a job or get gulag'd. So she went into the only place not corrupted by communism instead, outer space.

No, I mean join the officer school. Well, whatever, maybe she didn't want to join because the military is very ideologically strict, or she had disobedience remarks in her personal file and the military would not accept her as an officer.

Because Ariane had, at that point, already multiple violations of the Nation's laws on her name with banned books and wrongthink and so on, so she was to be sent to re-education camp.

        >though some theorize that Alina is Elster's brain donor's lover.
elster's gestalt was lilith itou, right? isa itou and lilith itou are potentially related by blood, because isa found a family war vet photo of lilith itou and alina seo
so isa ending up being ariane yeong's friend earlier in life, and her ending up being somewhat related to elster's gestalt, is something of a coincidence that i don't quite understand considering ariane ends up romantically loving an elster unit

          Anonymous

there's a frick ton of ambiguity with whether or not Elster's gestalt doner was Lilith Itou or someone named Anna Huang, as both names pop up in relation to her implied origins. Lilith gets more evidence but Anna throws a wrench into the works. this isn't even considering the complication that Elsters lost the original brainwave backup at some point so they just used their own backup going forwards

yeah, i remember the original brain map upload was lost on vinetia when an archive went kaput, so they used a dead elster recovered from a penrose program to make more elsters

it's basically societal shifts since 2016. transgender stuff tried to appropriate LBGTQ etc under their banner so now people that used to be into girl-on-girl flip their marbles about the mere idea that it has any association with trans shit, so now anything remotely carrying gay is bad and therefore everyone that likes it is trans, the no true scotsman, blanket statements, yadda yadda
basically just garbage bin variety psychos and their flavor of the year
