I’ll always love how well Johto’s additions meshed with the original 151. That’s the main thing I care about, though I’ve made exceptions for quality designs. It helps that the art style and sprites (Crystal) are the best the series has ever had.

      >even emulating the Gen 2’s style can’t save them
      Ouch

jesus christ those sprites, and designs obviously, are horrible

Nah, it's still second best after the original 151. There are a few Johtomons that I feel aren't as solid, though I won't bring up who. I like the consistent aesthetic of Johto. Rustic.

Frick I knew there’s be a comment like this. Stop being a dumbass, that’s not it works. the ones that didn’t pass Gen 1’s “quality control” had designs heavily reworked before being added to Gen 2 or were never added at all. And the beta proved that Gen2 had its own quality control considering how much was changed.
By the way, considering Gen1 let in wackamole, wackamole x 3, and Jim Crow as a Transvestite, maybe Gen1 didn’t have very good quality control

Overall great designs. Down-to-earth while still feeling fantastical. Contains many of my favorites.
However the babies drag the dex down, they make Gen2 feel too “moebloby”. Shame because it would undeniably be my favor dex without the babies. (It’s still my top 3)

The real choices are hoenn, unova alola or galar.
Kanto is too old which works with a few like primeape, lapras and snorlax bit falls apart with the cartoon animals and odd people.
Johto is too round and gay. It’s also derivative and afraid to push ideas further.
Sinnoh is also extremely derivative. It also started the trend of having too many legendaries that really don’t look good.
Kalos is just boring. The more off the wall stuff is just done in really dumb ways like hawlucha being tiny and having baby legs.

Hoenn also has a lot of round and cutesy design too. Swalot, Wailmer, Shroomish, Whismur, Numel, Spoink, Swablu, Spheal, Whiscash, etc. It's obviously has more edgy overdesigned Pokemon (and coomerbait waifumon) than Johto does, but not as many as Sinnoh and Unova. It's sort of a transition period between the Gen 2 art style and the Gen 4 art style.

no, it's a massive step down from gen 1. gen 3 managed to recover a little bit but from there it was all downhill so each passing generation makes gen 2 look progressively less awful

A lot in Gen 1 feel like, "Part of the world", in that I feel no characterization with them. Like, "Oh, there's a Zubat".

With Gen2 they all feel characterized. They'll all fun to look at individually.

Is it any wonder that Gen 2 makes so many people happy when when its Pokemon look like happy, doe-eyed plush dolls? I am dead serious; it's almost nothing but 🙂 faces, soft shapes and color palettes that are pleasing to the eye.

Scizor was cool in the early 2000s but hasn't aged as well as Scyther.
Scizor exudes a 'superhero' aura but that's less cool now after 20 years of superhero film spam.

      > People give it a pass because of nostalgia or they think Scizor is the entire Pokedex
If anything I've seen the other way around, people being extra harsh on Gen 2 because they have nostalgia for Gen 1 and they think the babies are the entire dex.

      >godawful crossgen evolutions
Are we talking about Sinnoh now? I agree. Lickilicky and Ambipom are abominations.

non anon, but many of the Gen 2Johto evolutions should have been their own thing that Gen 2 can have more families of its own instead of having to be share families. Scizor and Bellosum are great designs bogged down by the fact that their forced into families that don't belong in.

No one considers it that, but it's still appreciated nevertheless for adding onto some of more underdeveloped first generation mons in more thoughtful ways. Some will say that Sinnoh "fixed" a lot of them, but I think they just ruined a lot of the charm of smaller pokemon like Murkrow and Misdreavus for no real reason other than to make them bigger.

Honchkrow is based. It's literally my favorite Gen IV cross gen evolution. Mismagius is too creepy though, I agree.

Steelix is inoffensive but crobat ruined the whole charm of golbat's gigantic vampire mouth, Seadra was a badass mean looking spiky quasidragon, Kingdra throws it all away for the most pathetic seaweed camouflage ever. Even gamefreak must have realized this so they made dragalge to do the concept some justice.

Don't get me started on Scizor, Politoed, Bellossom, Espeon, Blissey, Hitmontop or any of the babyshit.

            >moar spieks
Insecure burgers like this are the reason we got hobo tattoo Kirby ads and fat raygun Megaman. Kingdra is tall and classy, literally every other regent mon back then was fat or at least wide af (the nidos, Kingler, Seaking, Slowking, Politoed, Tyranitar).

I don't think the babies are well implemented, but I don't think it's a bad idea on paper. Obviously it all falls on Tajiri who oversaw them and decided it to be the case, but they could have easily been weak early encounters that require more effort to train resulting in more valuable lategame pokemon. As for the crossgens, I think they rarely try and overshadow the original pokemon (Scyther and Scizor both specializing in different areas for example). They're more thoughtful attempts at exploring different ideas in earlier evolution line like Slowking or Politoed.
