i'd say so. we haven't had a pure stealth game in years. for some reason, people just aren't interested in stealth games but they LOVE stealth "elements" in non-stealth games

TLOU 1 and 2 on grounded are essentially AAA stealth games

its hard to make stealth fun, so making a whole game about it is super difficult
so generally if you want stealth in a game, current design principles go with having one or two stealth sections
      or
having stealth aspects that aren't strictly dickly necessary to have fun, like fps games letting you run up on someone's back and knife kill instantly

i suppose you could technically say they're stealth games but you still end up having to kill fricking everyone you see, you can't ghost past everything like full load stealth games

But you can, mostly. Search on yt about it.

you can skip many of the combat encounters in tlou 2 I know, there are few points where you reach a point of no return where you slowly open a door while making some noise, and then barricade it behind you.

in fact you kind of have to do it that way on grounded, at least early on. You'd just be potentially robbing yourself of scavenged resources.

        >but you still end up having to kill fricking everyone you see, you can't ghost past everything like full load stealth games
You absolutely can and it's insanely satisfying. Granted, you cant complete many encounters without stealth killing at least 1 (the person closest to the exit door) but there are plenty of opportunities for stealth. The 2nd game moreso than the 1st

Forgot to mention, you can do the encounter where Abby betrays the WLF without killing anyone (its tough and you gotta be quick) but there are actually voice line changes for if you kill 1 WLF, multiple, or none at all

and you do that in Hitman, particularly for suit-only challenges
Even using disguises you still have to avoid guys who will see through your disguise

In terms of mechanics, it's not a meme that it's more of a puzzle game with stealth aesthetic than a stealth game. I see people endorse SASO all the time, but at that point you're just playing a REALLY basic line-of-sight based stealth game.

what, because it doesn't have a light meter?
In every other regard modern Hitman is more complex than Thief even with no disguises involved
Thief doesn't let you do things like fire a gun, thereby sending all nearby civilians into a panicked state from the noise, making them unable to see you

            >because it doesn't have a light meter?
Or any other form of visibility beyond LOS. MGS3 and onward have some form of camouflage for instance. In the case of Thief or Splinter Cell, you can impact your environment to increase your safe zones.
            >Thief doesn't let you do things like fire a gun, thereby sending all nearby civilians into a panicked state from the noise, making them unable to see you
            >modern Hitman is more complex
Not sound design. And a few more subjective game design ideas, like I fricking hate how 47 'reads' something except you don't get to read it, you get to read the dossier entry ABOUT what he read.
Don't be ridiculous, noisemaker arrow, broadhead arrow against stone/tile/metal, shit any throwable object in the level can be used to distract enemies in specific directions. It's one of the first things Thief 1's first real level practically shoves in your face.
