Is the success of this game and franchise all thanks to proper marketing? Running into off screen enemies sounds like great fun... But if you target absolute autist spergs with your marketing and succeed they will be loyal and they will defend your horseshit to the death.

Sonic is multimedia, there are comics and cartoons which alot of kids grew up with in every generation so sonic has more fans.

Yes. Remember, Sonic was originally designed by marketers. Sonic is
    >easy to draw
    >has a distinct silhouette
    >is very simple and expressive
These three traits make him very appealing to young children; it gets them hooked early. By complete coincidence, these traits also make him appealing to people on the autism spectrum.

Yeah, more or less. I played the Genesis Sonic games back when they were new all while having access to Atari, NES, SNES, and of course other Genesis games. 1/2/&K were absolutely slogs to get through with 3 being the only somewhat respectable game of the bunch (props to 3D Blast for giving me motion sickness lol). I "liked" and full cleared them many times, though as I grew out of being a teenager and into an adult and went back to them I coulda see how they're even bigger messes than I'd realized. Just about every enemy and obstacle are expertly place "gotcha!" traps. Now Sonic 1's emerald stages make me ill, 2's half-pipe was always meme trash with and without Tails, &K is still a meandering slog unlike any other, and vanilla 3's just whatever.

I fail to understand how an observation is a lie. At most I've misjudged/misunderstood the enemy/obstacle design. Lie? Not a chance.

Of course marketing helps, but you can have all marketing you want, if your video game isn't at least decent then you won't get very far, especially not as far as Sonic has gotten since his inception over 30 years ago.
    >Running into off screen enemies sounds like great fun...
I don't mean to be "that guy" or anything, but literally just... get good. Sonic is the only franchise that people seem to feel proud of themselves, like they're some kind of video games connoisseurs, for being really bad at it.
    >But if you target absolute autist spergs with your marketing and succeed they will be loyal and they will defend your horseshit to the death.
A lot of people fell in love with Sonic without watching any commercial, most people got into it during the Genesis or Game Cube era, sometimes it was due a bundle, just having a copy or playing it at a friend's house, but people loved Sonic when playing it.

If you could just run to the right and never get hit everyone would complain about it being too easy and boring, and even then many still consider Sonic's 2D installments as easy when you're not going for the Chaos Emeralds and 100% completion. Anyways, it's a matter of memorization and reflexes, it doesn't take many attempts until you're reacting well to what comes ahead, and when you do it becomes very satisfying. Also, press down to roll into a ball, it's a must as it not only protects Sonic, but makes him go faster, especially in slopes, and it becomes even more exhilirating and fun.

      >If you could just run to the right and never get hit everyone would complain about it being too easy and boring
You are correct. And when an adult non-emotional person realizes that both of those things are true, he should also realize that the core design is flawed and should be scrapped or at least left on a shelf until you go 3d or solve it in another way.

        >The core design is flawed.
It would be the case if Sonic was as fast as he is in modern "Boost" installments, but he's not, he's at his fastest in 2D when rolling into a ball, which protects him, while simply running his speed is high, but it's still perfectly possible to react to obstacles, especially when noticing the patterns in level and enemy designs. A video game that you can just pick up and make a perfect run at is boring, all of them expect you to try and fail at first before you can get better, and once you get better at Sonic it's much easier to go faster, but even at first you can still go somewhat fast, faster than most video games at least, you'll run into things more often, but that's the reason Sonic doesn't die in a single hit, all you need is a single ring to stay alive and you can pick some back up after being hit, the design works well and it's the reason so many love it and even bought a Genesis back in the day just for Sonic, marketing helped, but actually playing Sonic is what made people want to keep playing.

This is nearly every game and franchise. Very few games simply got to be a marathon or caught on from sheer fun. Pac-man and and tetris went beyond marketing, but in the 90's? Sega had better marketing than game designers.
