Is there a single decent horror game that isn't just doing puzzles endlessly with the occasional jump-scare or thing chasing you?

darkwood seems to be the upper echelon "non-jumpscare" horror game, might be worth checking out if you haven't played it yet OP

This image was the first thing to creep me out in such a long time, frick.
Misdirection and then realizing something is a good way to do horror.

Where's my walking simulator where you explore a dead civilization laden with the suffering and anguish of millions of dead souls. No scary monsters. No chases. The screams have already been uttered, the deed done, you couldn't do anything to save these people. You can only piece together what caused this as you explore.

The horror is seeing the shadow of a once prosperous society, laid to ruin. Decayed bodies strewn about, existing technology still functioning as if it were turned on yesterday (and not years beforehand). Think of the dwemer ruins from skyrim except much more sinister. Bonus points if the thing that caused the civilization to collapse is still around, but in a dormant state.

          So the Last of Us?
This shit is boring, Anon. If you want to show a dead society that's sci-fi, not horror. Having Cthulu in the background just sleeping is also shit, you need an active threat around so you want to survive, you need the boring ass puzzles while the monster is around to cause tension, you can have combat, that's why resources are limited, so you can't dump all your bullets into it and win.

Idk anon the op wanted horror games without le scary monster and I just thought something up that may be interesting. It's pretty tough to find horror games like that.

This would be much more terrifying if the inhabitants of said civilization were still alive but in an almost unrecognizable state. Some fate worse than death, perhaps. A hivemind?

    >just doing puzzles endlessly with the occasional jump-scare
Well, you can't have a horror game be 100% jumpscare/chase scene all of the time. You need downtime or else you'd get desensitized and a headache very quickly.
And, if you think about it, downtime in horror games is kind of pigeonholed into this sort of thing. If there was action or combat involved, it would beg the question as to why the main character can't just use the same abilities required in those segments to easily deal with le spooky monster.
So that leaves puzzles, backtracking and maybe shit like audio logs to pad the downtime.

I can understand getting jumpscared, but getting "horrified" at pixels on a screen is children/small animal behavior (on top of being gay)
