the entirety of jrpgs from the 90s and up till the mid 2000s, moron.
y'know, the era that produced all the good games and not a single game since has come remotely close.
turn based combat has unironically become a fricking iq filter, if people say they hate it they're generally absolutely 80iq african tier morons it's impressively consistent.

        >the combat of those isnt good
incorrect. all the other things are good too, but sorry shadow hearts, grandia, phantasy star 4? objectively fun gameplay.
clowns really need to understand that min maxing equipment and menuing and creating setups you want to use IS part of rpg gameplay

Wrong. Most early jrpgs were just mashing ATTACK and sometimes you'd heal yourself.
The best turn based games were card games like Magic the Gathering for pc in 1997. Then the yugioh games after up until yugioh went to shit with too many updates past the egyptian god era.
Card games offer choice and strategy which is the point of taking action away from the duel.
Rarely do jrpgs do this. Even the recent Octopath 2 you can just overlevel and ATTACK your way to video in almost all the fights.
Games without levels force strategy. Another example could be Unicorn Overlord, a turn based game with auto combat. If you overlevel at one of the farm spots strategy goes out the window then you're just moving a deathstack from one enemy to the other.

that's great buddy, but i didn't fricking ask.
unicorn overlord is easy whether you overlevel or not, the game was functionally designed to be easy - also your overlevelled deathstack will still not win and be able to solo the game, it specifically will be countered and force you to change it in some way every few fights.

you clowns really are unable to differentiate "this gameplay isn't good" and "this game was designed to be too easy" and think they're the same thing. you're also citing 2 modern games, in reply to a post that says modern rpgs are literal dogshit in comparison that don't even hold a candle to the golden era jrpgs lol
unicorn overlord is literally just another ogre battle - of which we have a bunch of - but worse in literally every single way besides the character sprite quality

well what the frick did you want me to cite? the original final fantasy legend? fricking pokemon? I can't remember all the shit from the 90s I played. But I remember beating them all as a child simply by overleveling when things got hard and I didn't want to try different tactics.
Shin Megami Tenshi Nocturne was one of the most difficult games I played and even that could be stomped by merely over leveling. By the end of the game you could pierce resists and just make the main hero attack all everything defeating the point of elemental typing and resistances.
What about Fire Emblem? Sword vs Axe vs Lance? That shit doesn't matter just over level.

The point is, you can't overlevel in card games. You fix your deck or you get shit on. OP wanted good turn based combat. Card games define that. Fricking POKER will be played in a century. Nobody is going to remember what the frick final fantasy was except shitty movie games.

            >The point is, you can't overlevel in card games
You can - it's called buying all the best cards and building the strongest of whatever the current meta is. Then you can stomp players who have less money to burn and inferior cards. A shitty deck will only take you so far against "higher level" decks.

              Anonymous

This is probably true today as the games I used to play have been made pay to win. (See the aforementioned yugioh) but the originals were balanced.
If you're playing a pay to win card game then sure. But the player with a stacked deck still only has the favor in their odds. They still have to draw the combos and play them right.
I beat many of these pay to winners in school with generic decks just by thinking up good strategies.
An OP card doesn't work if you counter or stall it. It doesn't matter if your Darth Vader has 9 force power if he can't attack anything but Jawa fodder.
There is some argument either way, but card games have proven to be more interesting in my life than jrpgs with silly leveling systems.
A challenge run I did in FF9 was to beat the game at lv1 which was almost possible up until a few keypoints. This wasn't strategic, it was just spamming petrify over and over until it stuck.
You'll never create the feeling of an awesome comeback finishing move power play hand from a card game in a jrpg where your options are ATTACK, FLASHY ATTACK, DEFEND(Who uses this?) (ITEM)(Excuse me, no item runs 4life)

            >What about Fire Emblem? Sword vs Axe vs Lance? That shit doesn't matter just over level.
You can't, there's limited xp in real fire emblem games first of all, and they include something like 5 difficulties that if you pick the harder ones you aren't just ignoring that shit because you can't.
Nice shit example that says "i played on easy and i played like a moron, so that's the games fault."
I literally just said you're unable to differentiate between a games systems being bad and the game simply being designed as too easy so that mouthbreathers and 2iqs are able to finish it so they still get their purchase money.
Jrpgs are consistently designed as too easy for that exact reason. Great systems, great combat, but it rarely *forces* you to learn it, exploit it, min max it and make use of it becasue that takes thinking and some level of brains, which means it gets less sales.
This does not make the games bad, they are all instantly fixed by well designed hard mode difficulties, well designed post game and superboss content that makes you min max the system, or hard mode romhacks as you can quite clearly see.
Card games are literal dogshit for morons btw, gg

            >if people say they hate it they're generally absolutely 80iq african tier morons

This is actual projection. Turn based games seem complex to you because you're an idiot. The rest of us average and above IQ havers see them for the simplistic Farmville-tier shit they are. Perfect example of Dunning-Kruger in effect.

No anon, you're just an idiot and that's the reality of it. The perfect dunning kruger example here is you and this very post. You get upset when you have to open a menu or evaluate equipment or their interactions, you just want to keep going and mash your way through the next dumb shit because it doesn't require you to think at all for even a second, it's pure reactions and zero brain engagement.

              Anonymous

if you think any of your JRPGs are as decision intensive as A20 slay the spire you are delusional. JRPGs are sandboxes where you explore the mechanics then move on they are not designed to present a challenge once you understand the mechanics.

almost all of those are dog shit where you enter an area, it's literally impossible and then you run in circles grinding until you can mash attack to victory
      they're much better now.

        >it's literally impossible
No it isn't, in zero scenarios in any of those games is that the case, nice made up moron argument, you are just bad if that's your genuine belief via experience anon.
Grinding in something like phantasy star 4 will not save you either, it has a soft cap on level and even at that soft cap at the end of the game the random encounter enemies in the final dungeon will still be able to kill you quite easily.

SaGa games generally don't take themselves as seriously as other JRPGs and tend to be lighter on story, especially with games like SaGa Frontier and Emerald Beyond which are comprised of a collection of different worlds.

Low budget limitations aside, this is one of the GB style games where you hop around different worlds, the aesthetic whiplash and silliness is the point because it's a set up to a wacky episodic adventure in the vein of Flash Gordon where you jump around worlds with weird shit like minigun toting talking scarecrows, Gonzo fantasy victorian London or offbrand Ravenloft.
The high fantasy SaGa have a more coherent and serious style of setting but sci-fi SaGa is all about the ham, comedy and Doctor Who shenanings, it does help that the game design is top notch for the most part so you can still find new shit even after 100 hours and over 10 playthroughs.
