This. If it isn't OG it's catering to the 1% of people who like mecha so much they have literally seen all of it and actually want cringey crossover shit.
I have no idea how this series has managed as long as it has with this concept, but Moon Dwellers showed me that part of the problem is that they can't write anything but cringey crossover shit.

No. 30 is really fricking bad, in multiple ways.
V is a great introduction point on top of being a solid entry all around, so that's the one to go for if you want one of the English entries. Or you can play OGs on PS2 if you don't care about the crossover aspect and want to start yourself off with one of the hardest entries in the series which is much more focused on terrain stats and unit abilities and damage types.

V and 30 are the same fricking game. The writing in V isn't any better and V has the exact same allergy to actual sprite animation that 30 does (if anything 30 has less of it thanks to stuff like the MJP and Victory units)

Depended on the unit. Some still looked pretty good, others got shafted.
Z3 Gunleon had way worse attack choreography than the original but the wienerpit cut-in was funny.
Z1 already had some stinkers like every single Aquarion attack besides Mugen Punch, probably depends on who actually animated it.

Even if you restricted it to the set of translated games, I still wouldn't consider OGs to be one of the hardest entries when its easier than the GBA versions in every way.

I don't think its really that different. Twinned enemy units make some SR points harder I guess, twinning your own units doesn't actually matter much except for nuking retreating bosses.

The PS2 OG's changed things up by having some characters most notably Axel Almer survive and continue on, which has reflected in the other games by them, you know, being alive and present and usable. So the GBA ones where these characters normally die and can't be saved, clearly aren't canon anymore.

Axel being a bad guy until the end and dying for good is a waste

Japan shat on GBA OG2's Axel because not only was it written by someone else, but the character is nothing like the way he behaves as a rival on Lamia's route in the source material while everyone else was left relatively intact. They even expanded on a footnote character and made her into a real thing based on rival Lamia, so it stood out.
The problem that OG has now is that they kind of overcompensated for GBA Axel, so if anyone didn't know any better, you'd think that he was the protagonist when they did the A plot.

Almost all numbers from the west; since the active installed userbase for Steam from Japan and co. are a pittance and China is on its own separate, state-mandated China-only Steam.

'Guranteed installed audience' means nothing if it amounts to $20 worth of returns, might get in $10 worth of new base, cost you $15 to port, and your end goal is $100 net.

I'm not saying these games couldn't/aren't returning a net profit. But if its not in their goals and mixed with jap pride. They'll find an easy reason not to bring the game over here as stated previously.

Yes, that's the appeal of the franchise. The equivalent of when you were a a child, took your toys belonging to different franchises and pretended they were a super team fighting evildoers. The OG games are spinoffs based on the original characters introduced on the games.

The OG fans are just elitists who believe themselves to be above "licensed slop" just because the OG games put more effort into the gameplay part.

This is something that, for me at least, is a brand new thing to SRW threads. The idea that Big bot Fire Emblem being a crossover was a bad thing is something I've only seen here. Prior to that kind of posting starting up, OG and mainline fans were of the same stock.

They still are. People are just tired of the games being shitty, and since the last few great entries were all OG exclusive it's natural to see more praise and less aspersions going their way.

A huge part of the appeal of the game are seeing the different franchises and their animated attacks. It's just not as interesting seeing the same 1 minute long attacks with OG character. I mean, it's a pretty big part why MvsCI also failed.

          Anonymous

I think the over the top nature of the attacks communicate themselves well even without the licenses. In OG, it feels like the elements of the game are less about direct nostalgia, and more about selling the general vibe of hot blooded mecha anime. Like if someone made a superhero game with the goal of evoking the Bruce Tim designed cartoons.

There has been non-licensed superhero videogames and regardless of quality they sold like shit because outside a very niche (and therefore very small) audience of hardcore fans no brands = no appeal, no matter how much you "channel the vibe".

Just because you like something it doesn't mean most people do. I find very funny how you're so narcissistic and egocentric you can't understand that; just like those big CEOs who keep pushing GAAS and Hero Shooters even when they lose millions of dollars because you can't accept the idea that the world doesn't work on the same wavelength as yours.

That's unfortunate, though I guess that's to be expected. Superhero fans are much more attached to specific superheros rather than the concept in general. Mecha has much more wiggle room in that respect, even considering Gundam's primacy as THE mecha franchise. I doubt shows like Baldios, Braiger, God Mars and the like have much root in the Japanese' culture mind, but they can still get their time in the sun in SRW. Over here, notability is king of if you're not the top dog, you may as well not exist.

SRW 30's overseas performance actually surprised the Bamco top brass. They were completely taken aback by it exceeding the KPIs set for the title by a fricking landslide. They even publicly stated this in interview, iirc.

It's likely that the reason we haven't gotten any announcements in a while, is that they're rethinking what to do with this information.

SRW 30 was, plain and simple, a test to answer the question: can it sell? I.e. is the market potential there? The answer to that was expected to be either a "no" or a "not worth it" - but instead it did, in fact, STUPIDLY well. So now they'd have to think of how to attack the issue of international distribution formally. Synchronized releases are a must for that as well, given how heavily fan-servicy and spoiler-heavy SRW is. And it just dove-tails into a lot of planning, resource allocation, etc. from there.

Also don't forget that they basically had to mothball a lot of projects during the Corona period when they were understaffed and unable to work as effectively as from their offices. The studios were ordered to drop other titles, even those in the planning phases, like the next (and rumored to be final) SRW:OG entry - and focus on SRW 30 instead, since that was more directly marketable. They're only now able to start resuming that work.

Also, pair all of the above with the fact that SRW 30 signified a changing of the guard as well. The old producing and directing staff at the studio top is shifting. And that has an impact on time windows as well.

Lastly, SRW used to be released by three studios concurrently. All targeting different titles at different consoles and handhelds. But the ecosystem nowadays has consolidated towards multi-platform releases. So instead of three titles every 2 years towards different systems, we're solidly shifting into one title every 2 to 3 years.

30 sold well due to curiosity sales, and Bamco knows it so they won't push their luck again.
It's similar to why Code Vein never got a sequel even when it sold 3 million sales and had very positive scores on Steam: they know it sold due to novelty and that people won't fall for it again.

Armored Core 6 is on the same boat; there won't be a 7 or a For Anser-esque sequel because Bamco knows it won't sell.

The novelty of being another Souls clone with an anime flavor. Note how no one else has tried the same thing since then.

Basically Bamco knows that modern audiences will buy a game because it looks interesting, or because it has prestige behind it but won't buy a second one so they move on the next novelty project.

'other drama' - aka licensing conditions.

SRW 30 would've been created from the get-go with the intent of an international release and all its licensing would've been handled with that in mind. Trying to retroactively attain the licensing needed for some of the things in e.g SRW VXT would create more of a hassle than it's worth, since it means reacquiring licensing only for the foreign market - which is something the Japanese businesses wouldn't be too keen on, as they'd want the package deal including the homeland licensing rather than Bamco arranging sublicensing deals with foreign distributors etc. and the homeland company getting either zilch, or whatever is left after the distributor has finished skimming off the top. They don't want to piss those companies off either, because they have a very strong and solid working relationship with them and often get licenses on-the-cheap either as a favor; or for cross-promotional purposes such as to boost sales of e.g. model kits, Blueray rereleases, etc. happening around that same time-frame.

This sounds like it is drifting back to resource dedication of risk vs. reward of when all the other parties get their slice, the hassle is not worth it.

In both posts it sounds like the judgement is that Bamco is willing to work through the hoops for another shot and just has a slow PC division.

I will say this though; odds are pretty good that if SRW:OG 3rd/final happens, it'll get a western PC release.
And odds are equally good that we'd get a reissue collection of all previous OG entries to go with it, just running on the new SRW:OG 3rd/final engine and verbatim re-using the hi-def assets from SRW:OG 2nd and up - where possible.

        >The OG fans are just elitists who believe themselves to be above "licensed slop"
Which is ironic, since the OG games are basically built on crossing over the glue created to hold the licensed titles together. They are in a way literally the reheated leftovers.

        >the OG games put more effort into the gameplay part.
SRW Alpha 2, Alpha 3, SRW Z, SRW K, SRW L, and probably more all had comparative systems to the OG 'twins'- system. SRW Z even made formations actually matter in a big way. And both K and L gave unique cross-bonuses to paired units, which made it very compelling to work out optima, if you were the min-maxing kind of guy.

Both didn't really require it though. They weren't too hard.
That said: neither is OG. It has an *illusion* of difficulty because boss units are HP-sponges and use annoying shields you have to either penetrate or drain of energy first. Alpha 3 and its bosses capable of launching devestating MAP attacks, as well as all the bosses able to do so in Z and VXT, were legit more annoying and required more care in approach than OG.

OG was basically: hand units the energy drain special weapons, chuck someone with the skill to bypass defenses into Wildwurger L with the stun shot, and go to town. Drain 'em down to zero. Then one-turn wonder with SRX using TK-Burst sword or the HTB-cannon supported by whatever else can hit hard, using either the Zeal or whats-its-name skill to restore active use within the turn and Resupply to restore ammo and energy, until the boss is absolutely fricking crippled and curbstomped into nothingness.

In short: if OG is one thing, it's PRETENTIOUS.

The problem is that plenty of mecha franchises, both old and new, either ask ridiculous license fees (Giant Robo) or believe themselves to be too good for SRW (Sakura Wars until recently and only because the franchise's main producer retired) so they have to fill the games with that kind of forgettable seasonal show.
It's either that or another billion Gundam entries.

Just bullshit them with Armored Core

Best way to get into SRW is find the game that has the most of your favorite series and play that. A lot of the fun of SRW games is for characters that got wrecked in their series to get saved or for characters to get the powers they were denied like getting to save Bernie from 0080 and Tifa and Garrod to fight together to give Gundam XX the ability to command G-Bits. Otherwise go eith the OG games.

There's a host of translated games around, so the first thing that you need to tell us is which series that you like.
If there's a game including that series then give it a shot.

If you don't know a lot about robots and just want something to try then here are your options
    >SRW2
You want to experience the series from its roots and see how its changed since then. SRW1 is a completely different beast of a game from every game afterwards and should only be played as a cursory knowledge check.
    >SRW Gaiden: Masoukishin
A largely self contained sidestory game that explains the origins of Masaki Andoh, one of the oldest and most prominent SRW OGs. Cast comprised entirely of OG characters/units, has emphasis on things like facial positioning unlike other games.
    >SRW Alpha Gaiden
While it is technically a sequel, the game's plot is largely self contained and it tells you all you need to know to enjoy what's going on. Considerably more difficult than most of the translated games, so you'll actually feel engaged when playing it.
    >Super Robot Wars J/W
Both of these games share a lot of similar series and are both easy. Pick the one that has more series that you like, if you have no preference then W is the more refined one.
    >Super Robot Wars A Portable
You want to put on your big boy strategist pants and play what's considered by many to be one of the hardest games in the series. Easy to follow plot and likeable cast of characters.
    >Super Robot Wars Original Generation
The most common starting point in the series for many people. Acceptable difficulty, small cast of characters, above average plot for SRW standards. GBA and PS2 versions are different beasts but always play OG1 first.
    >Super Robot Wars Endless Frontier
You liked Project x Zone/Namco x Capcom and want more.

Accuracy issues in FE6 are overstated and the only time that hit rates ever become an issue is when dealing with bosses on thrones where you simply just use a more accurate weapon and/or supports to assist.
AP does have accuracy issues due to it being rushed and when you're more familiar with the series, you can see where the weaknesses lie, but you do have the tools to make accuracy palatable.

Yes, it is torture when the infamous shit lord is still in like the top 5 best performing units for the whole game cause everyone else is just that bad.

Roy is nowhere near the top 5 best performing units in all of FE6. People shit on him pretty hard but he's somewhere in the middle among the cast.

              >simply just use a more accurate weapon and/or supports to assist.
Using a more accurate weapon means usually dealing 0 damage to the general bosses and I'll be honest I still don't know exactly how supports work.
              >Roy is nowhere near the top 5 best performing units in all of FE6
In my playthrough he unironically was, maybe my rng was just fricked.

Generals have terrible avoid and you can just use effective weaponry to deal with them. I know that you might be triggered at the idea of using swords against a general but Armorslayer is one of the best tools you have for the gorillion armor bosses in the early game. Hammer is an option but axes have horrendous hit rates even with WTA, so save that for someone with high skill.

With regards to AP, its hit rates are problematic because the devs decided to import a lot of mechanics from OGs and left hit modifiers from Vanilla A alone which had a lot of other things to keep it check. That's why the patch opted to give everyone +20 Hit to stabilize accuracy to be in line with other games in that era. A number pilots also had their space terrain set to A by default because AP only has one Thruster Module.
In any case, if you aren't using the patch and want to experience the game as intended for your first run (which you should), there are mechanics for you to use to assist with hit rates.
                1. EWAC
                2. Optional Parts
                3. Quattro's Ace
                4. Dodge Decay
                5. Spirit Commands
                6. Stat Parts (Lamia should get most/all hit parts if you pick her in Vanilla, Axel in the patch)
Also, if you don't plan on using a character, it might be better if you just killed them off instead of doing the secret. A LOT of secrets have really strong items as rewards for not picking them up.

The biggest issue with localizing SRW is license drama. It's easy to do a crossover in Japan when your company owns the majority of the notable series and only have to make deals with a few others. In the West, it's not as centralized, which makes life difficult.

OG2 makes Axel less of a dick and the cast from R is just there. Then OG2nd and the Inspectors anime retconned events from OG2 mainly Earth Cradle.

Let's be honest, even the shortest SRW demands about 80 hours from you minimum

No. Even doing literally every last mission in 30 you'll still only end up with about 170 hours, which is the length of a little over one and a half standard SRW games. Not 3.
And again, the main campaign is only like 43 stages as opposed to a standard game's 50. You can also beat 30 in less time it takes to complete just one of VXT

No, they're not, but they still take an obnoxious amount of time to figure out who you're going to distribute kills to, who has the right move for the enemy you're trying to kill, who needs resupply, etc. It's not difficult but it is far more time consuming than it needs to be
That's why 30 doesn't bother me any more than a standard SRW game. Having more stages isn't the problem when all the stages themselves are tedious

The majority of SRWs after they made watching the attack animations optional are around like 30-40 hours even if you're actually reading them and not fast forwarding through moonrunes.
The games with squads are a bit longer to get through the actual stages, and games like 30 and Impact that have insane stage counts are outliers. Impact's also just a slow game in general since it has unusually long load times for everything.

What were they thinking with Huckebein 30th?

If you complain about 30th and proceed to like Odyssea, Riese and similar kinds of upgrades then its just double standards. A lot of upgrades in the series are slightly bigger machine or the same machine with a backpack. Then the base moveset is recycled with a new attack or two depending on how they feel about MAPW/Combos. Alt doesn't even get any new moves on upgrading in OG either.
The actual problem with 30th that people refuse to articulate is that they didn't put in enough effort into shaking up the animations on upgrade bjt then again Odyssea was equally guilty for most of that so...

Reideen 2007 and GR-Giant Robo. We've had all the other weird pseudo-reboot/reimaginings fro the early-mid 2000s except for those.

Reideen, quality of the sow non-withstanding, is fricking bonkers; 2007 really liked stuff being stored in the moon I guess. As for Giant Robo, its mainly because I think getting a non-OVA Giant Robo would be cool, plus the soundtrack is really good IMO even if the show is distinctly not Giant Robo.

Since we're on Ganker, what game series you anons want to see? We already had Virtual On, Sakura Wars and Mega Man(X-Omega counts, I guess).

You only really need to BS why XSmall units can keep up with stuff like full size Mazingers, Gundams, etc. but it's not hard to explain why stuff would get outside of the Second World given Seledy's fricking nuts to begin with. Plus, if you opted to use the game-version, it gives you free access to an old Ban and Hiro too, not to mention the other Ragnarok Phase units like Leoroader, the Ji series and the Vesper line.

        Anonymous

No. It was put into Alpha 3 due to a combination of it being the newest Gundam series at the time (see Unicorn in Z3) and the Gundam cast having nothing to do because they completed all of their plots in the precious game.
Don't get why everything about SEED always has to be some sort of conspiracy with you people. Gundam is notorious for being shoved into the series long before its actually finished.

What are all the OG games? Im aware of the snes one and the two gba/ps2 ones. I like mecha, but i only watched a few series like macross, big o and gundam. I rather play just as original nigs. Plus i like their character music more.

The OG games are crossovers of characters from non OG games (and some spinoffs like Hero Senki Project Olympus)
As stories, they're not very interesting, since they also use the OG plots from those non OG games, OG plots that are threadbare stories that usually only lasted 5 stages tops in their original games because the point was to give the licensed series an excuse to come together. And in the OG series these threadbare plots are stretched to fill full 50 stage games. Granted they do like 4 of them at a time, but still, loads of filler

Not that guy, but Astray plot is moronic when you actually read it and is worse than TV. W also doesn't really focus on Astray either because all SEED related plot is almost entirely relegated to route splits, Astray included.

J if only because it plays it straight to the point of moronion if only because

I replayed J less than a year ago, no one KNEW about G Gundam because its entire storyline was changed to be an underground experiment by the EA and Blue Cosmos were behind the Devil Gundam shit. The GAT-X series is special in J because its the first Gundams that don't require you to be a superhuman to pilot.

G Generation stages have phases and multiple map layers, if you played MX you should know what's that.
Think SRW J reinforcements but that happens at least 4 or 5 times in one stage.
00 stages in Crossrays were pure cancer because you had multiple factions, then A-laws bullshit and then the ELS with a million units.

          Anonymous

Sacrificed in favor of the fricking ship presumably (not that the ship took any budget to animate whatsoever though). Gunner and Boxer are technically a MK-III only thing and while the 30th has the Graviton Rifles, it's pretty much just the original Hucke otherwise
Did you at least get the Roche Saber Overbreak move? It actually looks pretty good

            Anonymous

God the OG ship is so boring and basically gets no new moves. It's not weak by any means but it's nowhere near as kino as Yamato was.

            [...]
The actual problem with 30th that people refuse to articulate is that they didn't put in enough effort into shaking up the animations on upgrade bjt then again Odyssea was equally guilty for most of that so...

the animations are the least of 30ths problem of 100s of filler stages, dumbed down gameplay, and recycled stages
