              Anonymous

Because that would be the best way to approach an open world RPG, if this had been as such then you would have many more options and possibilities. Plus more content added through mods that would improve the game immensely.

                Anonymous

Then the game would be wide as an ocean and deep as a puddle. Tacked-on RPG mechanics aside you do realise that the vast, vast majority of people wouldn't look at the game for anything more than the school?
Skyrim and Bethesda RPG's in general are known for their "make your own fun" approach and their hardcore modding communities. This and that aren't even in the same wheelhouse.

The school is the draw and I don't think this game needed RPG mechanics, it is just an a way to make the player feel like they're progressing and getting stronger, they're shallow.
The scope is so different that you can't really begin to make the draw to Skyrim or TES games. The Witcher 3 is probably the only game that people could try that with but even that falls horribly flat when you consider the intent behind the worlds design.

                Anonymous

Ok true the school is a draw but they’re not focusing on that you don’t have lesions you attend and there is no house points or house cup to speak of. The maps already looks shallow as the school is only a tiny part of it the rest being empty space and there isn’t Hogsmeade.

Without RPG mechanics how is you character going to be any different from a character someone else would have made apart from appearance. With RPG mechanics you could make you character unique through different attributes, skills, traits, quarks or advantages and disadvantages.

                >Ok true the school is a draw but they’re not focusing on that you don’t have lesions you attend and there is no house points or house cup to speak of.
See this is one of the things that the game should be doing. The school is a good setting, making it a back drop is a mistake.

                >The maps already looks shallow as the school is only a tiny part of it the rest being empty space and there isn’t Hogsmeade.
You can take or leave Hogmede, personally I don't mind either way.

                >Without RPG mechanics how is you character going to be any different from a character someone else would have made apart from appearance.
Ideally you do that with house and customisation options. Note that these aren't the same as RPG mechanics. People can RP without RPG mechanics, you see it all the time in GTA and the like, cutomisation options are the key and the game has them in spades.

The RPG mechanics themselves are just shallow progression markers. They add nothing to the game and I guarantee that by the time you hit the level cap you'll have every upgrade purchased anyhow.
You make the character unique with how you go about playing them.
Two people with similar builds aren't likely to play a game the same way unless they followed a "meta" build for those characters.

That’s simply not true RPG mechanics allow your characters unique attributes to have real in-game effects otherwise it’s just shallow cosmetics. Some people are naturally stronger than others so it makes sense for them to have higher strength stats and the same with intelligence etc. Also if you have certain advantages and disadvantages you could have a character that is so good that he takes damage from holy places or maybe one that regenerates while underwater. This opens up much more possibilities that have real in-game effects because otherwise it’s just pointless. Also in a good RPG if you wouldn’t be able to have a character max every state and skill and nor should you. It doesn’t make sense for a warrior to max magic stats or for a thief to master heavy armour.

        >Trust us
It took a long time to get anywhere and boats carrying hundreds of people were very rare and not all races had them, like Black folk.

That's what people have forgotten, or at least people who live in a Silicone Valley barrack or a rundown tenement in New York as they desperately try to LARP their favorite sitcoms like Friends, as now all it takes is a single twenty-hour plane flight to reach the other side of the world. Back then? The vast, vast, VAST majority of people used horse drawn buggies as their means of transportation. Before the troony starts ranting about trains, trains needed very specific infrastructure in a flat ground based terrain which meant they were only built in highly developed areas.

To name an example: carving a tunnel through a mountain range was a herculean effort and it took decades for the two sides of the Rockies to be connected. And that was long after the Injuns and Outlaws were gone. In Africa, your rails are going to be scrapped by Bantu making your train run off the rails. In Asia, the Boxers and Taiping would derail your locomotives as a matter of ideological principle. Indochina? Tcho-Tcho would prey on the workers.

Once you throw sea-travel into the mix and it's even more difficult. It took about two months to travel from Great Britain to Australia in a steam-powered vessel. Clipper vessels like the slave ships trannies rant about took weeks to reach the new world. Furthermore, the quality of life in Victorian Britain for the average middle-class citizen was about the same as a middling Qing Bureaucrat. There just wasn't a reason to immigrate.

Even America needed to have massive land grabs and precious metal rushes in order to attract new people otherwise nobody would move to the New World. Apart of the reason why South America failed was because Brazil and Argentina didn't get lucky with their gold reserves. Whoever this 'historian' was, I guarantee you he took the short bus.

If you move to far away from Poppy the game literally gives you a “you are leaving the mission zone” straight out of Call of Duty. Add the fact that you’re just following a path that leads from scripted encounter with dialogue to fighting and more scripted encounters with dialogue. The dungeon is just a straight path with no branches or any room for alternative strategies.

          >hogsmeade not in the game, or shit like the NPCs being identical and not reacting to any spells being cast at them

yeah during the mission, same as shit like red dead. That doesn't mean you can't fully explore everything when you're not in a story mission.

I know but this limits the way you can approach the objective you can’t say climb the mountain that overlooks the poachers and snipe them, or fly underneath their lookout and take them out from below or decide to bugger off and ignore the quest for a good time bringing Poppy with you on other quests. No, you have to go on the set path the developers put for you without any deviation even when it might make tactical sense.

I’m talking about when compared to RPGs as a whole and from that perspective it’s a further dumbing down of the genre. RPGs for the PLATO computers were more in-depth than what passes as an RPG now. I hoped that this would not a be a further downgrade and maybe something on Skyrim’s low level but this might even be below that.

There shouldn't be any combat at all, or combat encounters should be extremely rare. And certainly not 1v10 against way more experienced mages: the protagonist is not a student, he's fricking Wizard Terminator.
What I wanted was a magic school simulator with classes/social life management and kino castle exploration. But what they made is... a generic Ubisoft game with a Harry Potter skin.

Which is fine I guess, it'll probably be a decent videogame. But I'm not playing it, not interested.

Combat would've been expected either way since the game is set in the 1890's specifically, shit is about to get wild on Earth and we know that shit goes wrong for Wizards around then too.
The main plot being some kind of goblin uprising is hilarious though, that's shit to do with the Ministry of Magic, not some kid.
Even if said kid has access to very, very old magic.

I did not I described RPGS as a genre of games based on or derived from tabletop RPGS. That is a description of RPGs as a whole not just a subsection because all RPGs have taken core elements from tabletop games without that they can’t be really called an RPG.

I’m not a troony and this game doesn’t make me angry I am merely concerned about the quality of the game. I want to be wrong about the points that I raised and I have almost pre-ordered it which I haven’t done since Skyrim. But I don’t want to feel that I’m throwing my money on something that will be dumbed down and that will have no mod support.

        >I am merely concerned about the quality of the game
There has been around 6 games in total in the last 8 years with good quality. By good quality I mean something you can immerse yourself with.

        TLOU
        Red Dead Redemption 2
        GTA4
        God of War Ragnarok
and I'm running out of quality games.

Which is really bad! Games are improved immensely by mods Oblivion, Fallout 3, New Vegas and Skyrim would have been not nearly as good without mods. Mods would be able to give us new spells, locations and creatures to fight. We could have had something like Midas Magic for this game or monster mod or some of those bizarre new location mods like Salem. But alas we can’t even have an unofficial patch mod. I can’t see myself enjoying this game for more than a month without mods.

Compared to RPGs in general, I wasn’t exactly expecting Daggerfall levels of depth but this game looks dumbed down even compared to Skyrim’s and Fallout 4’s low levels.

        Anonymous

From what I've seen you probably can up the difficulty, artificial. The game is not much different with Skyrim/FO4 marked quest locations. I don't know how more dumbed down than those game can be. You can compare it with Elden Ring dumbed down, but Skyrim was so easy, people started doing mods to make it even more difficult.

          Anonymous

Dumbing down is not about making the game easier but about removing features and options especially RPG features. If have less options and less complexity then the game just becomes more limited and thus dumbed down. Besides you could mod Skyrim and Fallout 4 to make them more difficulty we can’t even do that with this one.

    >it's a generic action rpg with a harry potter paint job slapped on it
how did they not make it re-playable? a harvest moon/gta/bully sim would have been infinitely better. Want to focus on quidditch this playthrough? extra quests/win championship/get invited to world cup/etc. Want to focus on schooling? Learn all spells, get picked for tri-wizard torunament. Want to start a business? Sell stuff to students, open a shop/supply a shop in hogsmeade/diagon alley etc. Want to romance someone? Want to train animals? want to train people to take on dark wizards ala dumbledores army?
WHY WHY WHY did they not think 'hey, there's a lot we could do to give this game replay-ability and really make people work for all the gold we can bury in this universe depending on how they play and how good they are' and instead thought 'lol harry potter now go here and win'

That would require effort, anon. I'm of the opinion a lot of these games are made from an AC code template companies sell each other under the table. What you said might be possible but it would requite effort, while the template is already optimized with classes and methods for the regular AC game.

RPG stats are not arbitrary some people are stronger or smarter than others and that should be represented in the stats. Also what if I want to play one time as a evil mastermind wizard who physically weak but makes up for that through forbidden spells and is damaged by holy places or a physically strong wizard who is not good with magic but uses magic to enhance his strength and heals while underwater, the restricted character creator won’t let me do either of those things. Also RPGs are derived from tabletop RPGS so they should use their mechanics

Resident Evil games all have Denuvo, at least at launch, and it doesn't stop modding. Mass Effect is on Unreal and there are thousands of mods for both the original releases and the Legendary Edition remasters. Games don't need modding support to receive mods, but it does make it easier and allow for more thorough overhauls.

The only ‘mods’ for the Resident Evil remakes are model swaps no custom levels or areas like we got with the original Resident Evil games on the PC.

Yep it's looking like another 7/10 AAA slogfest. I watched some early gameplay previews and what immediately jumped out to me was how soulless and cold the castle felt, the artificial, plasticy graphics and character mocap, and how fricking unpopulated it was. It's a fricking magic school and there are like 10 students walking around. What?

Combat looks like GOW mashy shit but if you're right and there are no classes or quiddich and the game is heavily on-rails, this is going to be a huge disappointment. Troons won.

A video I watched made it seem very questionable and is making me really wonder why some people keep insisting it's gonna be a masterpiece. It's just so... .typical?
The things I remember that irked me:
    >Human models are firmly in uncanny valley and move in that weirdly animated way that's popular in games these days where everything has way too much momentum, like you've got olympic hammers attached to you spinning you around every time you turn slightly
    >FPS dips constantly despite PS5 performance mode
    >Loading signs and people phasing in and out of reality
    >2004 era LODs (it might just be the PS5 but the area around Hogwarts looked almost entirely like Lake Rumare
    >No meaningful way/consequences of interacting with the world, you can dump fire all over the place and nothing fricking happens
    >Bam Ham stealth that feels at home in the avg Ubisoft game
    >Tacked on crafting system a la ^
    >Seems to be story and side quest focused rather than exploration focused, Hogwarts mostly seems to be 'lookie here' with scripted events all over.
    >Atrocious UI/UX elements such as those rays you follow around to the next quest loc (though I assume those can be turned off) combined with a minimap that also plots your route

    And my biggest peeve:
    >Wizarding duels and combat look like actual shit
The Simon Says shield system, the 'this is red and hits hard, this is yellow and hits for less but holds the target up, this is blue and hits for less but does X', the fricking Spidey Sense for dodging spells (assuming this can also be turned off/ isn't present on higher difficulties). There being 26 spells or however many makes me feel that the ones actually used in combat will be largely there for the simon says shield shit and won't have much of a difference between each other.
I can see why Harry Potter fans might like this but I'm failing to see why they're losing their shit (apart from troony-obsessed morons just using it as an excuse)

Is it worth getting a dumbed down pseudo RPG from the dullest franchise in the history of franchises? Seriously each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.
Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.
    >a-at least the books were good though.
"No!" The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."
I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.

Might and Magic games, the Ravenloft series or Betrayal at Krondor were aimed at a general audience but they still had in-depth RPG mechanics

From RPGS in general which this game claims to be this game looks more dumbed down that even Skyrim and Fallout 4. RPGs should have become more advanced but their becoming more restrictive and shallow. Even RPGS for the PLATO computers in the 70’s are more advanced then modern ‘RPGS’

The Sims is a franchise that appeals the most to women but the Sims 2 seems more in-depth than this game and plus you have been able to mod every sims game for the PC

It'll probably be mediocre, yeah. Looks like it will be an open world game wide as the sea and deep as a puddle, with a story you can probably beat in two sittings. They hyped this up as THE HARRY POTTER GAMES TO SURPASS THE MOVIE TIE-INS AND BREAK THE BARRIER!!ELEVEN
But I doubt it will make anyone but potter nerds happy, and even then, only potter nerds that hate trannies.
The combat doesn't even look that interesting. There's no spell learning, no technique. It's just a cooldown-based third person shooter where you weave off CD abilities and maybe pull off one of a few interesting combinations.
The hype for this game seems entirely manufactured.

      >Daniel doesn't want to come back to Harry Potter for reasons that are probably similar to other child stars who grew to resent their roles
      >Emma says she doesn't want to come back either but is obviously full of shit, she just doesn't want Rowling to be a bane on her acting career and moral status
      >Rupert is the least successful of the trio but is all for coming back despite all the drama surrounding Rowling
Yeah, they're definitely going to have to recast almost everyone for future Harry Potter films.

Rupert is the most based of the 3, his participation on the Guillermo del Toro series on Netflix was good.
