Is this going to be one of those games that we hear nothing about forever, constantly thinking it might just be another year or half year around the corner, and next thing we know it’s been in development for 5+ years and still almost nothing?

In the gap between DQVI and DQVII, Square released at least four Final Fantasy games.
Not to mention that the gap between IX and XI was eight years long.

I hope to God Yuji Horii shakes things up a bit.
I came out of DQ11 with the impression that even HE was getting sick of the series strict chains on tradition.
I had way more fun playing DQ spin-offs these last 10 years than I ever did playing 11, especially the Builders games.

      >I came out of DQ11 with the impression that even HE was getting sick of the series strict chains on tradition.
The thing with DQ11 is that it was supposed to be an anniversary title, something that celebrates DQ. Which is why it adheres quite closely to the classic DQ-formula.

Yeah and I'm sure they'll still make traditional turn based games they'll just be spin offs which isn't a bad thing because they're still of really good quality

Everyone misinterpreted what Horii said during the livestream, to the point that he later clarified on twitter that it was still turn based. It's changing, but will still be turn based.
The only other things known is that it will be somewhat of a darker entry aimed more at adults, and will be have a focus on tough life choices, with outcomes possibly changing depending on what choices are made.

Different anon here but honestly thank God. They’ve taken enough turn-based RPGs and changed their battle systems, let Dragon Quest be Dragon Quest. Its best chance to thrive is to remain a high quality turn-based game, which actually makes it a differentiator in today’s era.

the original japanese text doesn't give any actual confirmation about whether it's still be turn based. he just reassures older players that they will still be able to enjoy the game.

This bums me out. Not because I don't like turn-based, I just don't have faith in the DQ team in mixing it up to make it fun enough to last an 80-hour playthrough. DQ11 was boring as shit, I almost didn't finish it. Thank God I only played the definitive edition with it's fast-forward option.

I can't speak on behalf of the characters and monsters (>muh tradition)
But I do know why they always frick up the music. You have the composer Koichi Sugiyama to thank for that.

Sorry anon, I keep forgetting that Ganker is infested with people like you with goldfish attention spans. Allow me to spoonfeed you and your special needs.

Sugiyama was an oldschool copyrightgay that owned all the music he's ever composed and had no understanding (or care) of fan demand for his orchestrations for the games. He genuinely believed that if the games ship with orchestral versions, people wouldn't buy tickets for his live orchestra shows. That's the level of moronation we're dealing with here.
And since DQ has this entire weird ethos of having one of the oldest intact video game dev teams, SE was in this weird spot where they felt the need to have his also-ran ass onboard for, say it with me now, tradition.
But now that he's finally kicked the bucket (2 days from now will be his death anniversary), I'm hoping SE will finally stop with all this nonsense. Now that they're forced to replace him, hopefully we won't get our times wasted, having to way years for the game to come out with orchestral version. And if any traditiongays cry about it, then just put the option to play the game with MIDI, problem solved.

Don't get me wrong, he was a brilliant composer, I love many tracks that he's made, but goddamn his interference with the games was getting on my fricking nerves.

Anon, Square Enix doesn't (wholly) own Dragon Quest. Horii's, Toriyama's, and Sugiyama's companies all had stakes. Armor Project, Bird Studio, and Sugiyama Kobo. Square doesn't even get to have a say in Sugiyama's replacement as a result because of that. It's going to be the successor Sugiyama himself chose.
I'm not even going to bother with the rest of your moronic post because you clearly don't know what you're talking about.

                >>That what is, dipshit?
The truth is that Koichi Sugiyama owns his music and never worked for Square Enix. He also paid for all the orchestral recordings of his compositions, which generally happened after the games released.

Now you tell me, why the FRICK would he have to be forced to hand them to Square Enix for free? If Square doesn't want to pay for them, then they don't fricking get them.

Everytime a publisher was willing to pay for the orchestrations (DQ8 with the big marketing push and Nintendo in DQ11 and 7) the games released with them.

I won't be surprised if it is the last Square game released of all those lists, like 2025 or 2026
