I don't think it's an answer to Halo, game was made as a university project if I recall, devs loved halo 2 and you can see the inspiration when you play the weapons. But I feel like it what Halo would have been (aside from the portals) if it was made for PC directly.

First bad. It is extremely mediocre, had problems like bloom and armor lock, had a much less interesting story than the book, etc.

I always forget how shit the multi was. I always remember Reach as a fun single player game to play with 3 other friends.

I remember barely anyone used armor lock that much, it was always pretty overstated. Jetpacks and sprint actually changed map layouts with their implementation at least. Never really figured out what bloom even was but I thought that was related to the title update 343 insisted on doing for no real reason. Custom games was pretty fun though. Made a WTC invasion map where you take a drop pod down from the top of the freedom tower to navigate.

        Anonymous

Jetpack was definitely way more map breaking. People had a rocket or sticky reflected by armor lock once every 20 games though, so the armor lock is broken. What's worse to me is 343 agreeing and adding that fuck awful spartan shield thing in 4 before giving up on balancing it in any way and just dumping it.

          Anonymous

Armor Lock was busted because it bought time for you to call out to a teammate and force you to divide your attention between the guy who can pop out at any moment and the guy who is an active threat. It's definitely not as broken as Jetpack or Sprint, but it's still not particularly fun to play against. None of the AAs(aside Hologram) were.

Good. Has its minuses but absolutely doesn't come next to 4. Hell I still haven't even bothered playing 4 since the og 360 days despite playing the rest on the MCC.

Armor lock was still used enough to piss me off and make games grind to a halt because some pussy didnt want to die for another 5 seconds. I'm glad they cut down on the abilities for MCC playlists.

It was good overall but it was also Bungie's last Halo game and really it was the swan song for the franchise as a whole. Nobody could have really predicted how much the series would fall from grace thanks to 343i's handling of the franchise.

Looking back on things in hindsight I think it was a given that Halo would have drastically changed up its formula at some point anyways. They weren't going to keep being able to release the games forever the way they were with critics also still giving them great review scores. Even with MS bonuses being a thing they weren't going to keep gamers interested for yet another H3 style game no matter how good it was. H3 was the peak of Halo so it was going to go downhill anyways.

I respect Bungie for finishing their run on the franchise with something a little more experimental and not bringing back Chief for some nonsensical reason. They said his story was done and it was. That said, the majority of it was not successful and if a good developer had taken the reins all of it would have been thrown out. Unfortunately, we all know what happened next.

Pay attention to movement, map design, and the weapon balance next time you play pre-Reach Halo. Note how you have access to vehicles every time you're in an open area. Paper mache vehicles are even a result of Sprint making maps more open. The Halo 2/3 vehicle health system would be stupidly overpowered on the more open maps.

Last good the campaign was great and people often forget Forge and the Anniversary mode without the crap.

The core issue on my part is that the movement feels a lot stiffer. Halo 3 hit this sweet spot where it was better than Halo 2 even, everything was smooth and felt right. Reach feels somewhat cumbersome.

      Anonymous

You really think Halo 3's movement felt more smooth than 2's? It wasn't as slow as Reach, but it still felt like you were trudging through mud.

Halo 2 always felt like a somewhat janky indie fps which lead to some funny moments.
Halo 3 movement feels refined. What you come to expect from a big production, which it was.

I think the best example is the BR, the movement feels effortless in Halo 2 which you could say is lore accurate. In Halo 3 it feels like MC is carefully aiming down the sights which is cooler.

After revisiting halo 3 with the MCC release, halo 3s campaign is by far the worst of the bungie halos. Best MP imo but the 3 campaign is dogshit.

It suffered because everybody responsible for Halo 2's narrative either quit, moved positions or was distracted by something else. Jason Jones and Joseph Staten weren't anywhere near the script which is why it nosedived into boring schlock.

IIRC they changed narrative direction cause part of the dude bro audience didnt want to listen about alien religion

funny thing is they were always going to lose that audience when CoD4 came out

No way. Sierra 117 is the best opening level in the original trilogy, the next three levels are wall to wall action emphasizing everything good about Halo combat (hallway clearing, vehicles, and spectacle). The Ark and the Covenant showed what true next gen Halo level design should look like, taking design elements from the first two games and expanding on it without just making the same game over and over again but with shinier graphics.

Yeah the last two levels are really disappointing but you can't ignore how good that last warthog run is as the conclusion to the trilogy. The only problem is that it's too short. There's a missing level between The Ark and The Covenant and it's pretty obvious.

Launch Reach was the last good Halo. After Title Update it became the first bad Halo.

It was probably one of the best before the title update, post TU is easily on the bottom of the Bungie Halos. Unfortunately, that's the version we got in the MCC in-spite of everyone telling them not to.

Why the fuck was the spare ammo size drastically reduced in 3 onward, it made the game so much less fun when you stocked up on a gun you liked only to have to throw it away after 2 firefights.

One of the most understated things that seriously degraded multiplayer was using Hitscan, and how much push the DMR had on vehicles.
Think I had a k/d ratio of 2.0 on day one cause I figured you could sit at the back and snipe all day while everyone else takes risks. Fuckin shit balance

Halo Reach had the last, best, customization out of all of the Halo games.

I would Reach was the last that felt in line with the series. I only got halfway through 4 because of how offputting it was.
The first one that was bad was 2, while still playable, it's clusterfuck of a development echoed well into the final product.

Considering 85% of the custom game server browser is nothing but Halo Reach games, I'd say it's the franchise favorite.

First bad Halo but it isn't until 4that we get shit unsalvageable Halo.
    >sprint
    >letting people use Grunt Birthday Party in MP among other retarded obnoxious effects that ruined the whole sombre art style they put so much fucking effort into
    >major plot narrative issues (you have to be a dedicated Halo fan to notice)
I was also going to add how it was kinda gay that so many of the coolest armor unlocks were based on mindlessly grinding credits in MP/abusing that Sword Base glitch (I dunno how good they were at banning that) rather than fun challenging achievements, but by modern standards this system is now extremely generous.
