Is this the most overrated stealth game of all time?

>extremely simplistic gameplay
>awful, linear level design combined with backtracking
>awful combat mechanics despite there being several forced combat sections
>shitty, overly convoluted controls
>has aged like milk in every way except OST and voice acting
>is a literal “movie game” and markets itself as such
>story is babby’s first melodrama with combined extremely generic “nukes bad” message and anime tropes

I swear that the only reason this game got more attention than Thief and Tenchu is because it panders to weebs who don’t even like stealth as a genre. It’s basically the vidya equivalent of Oscar-bait.

Thief is far more overrated, and is for pseuds who prefer DK64 collectathons but want to seem sophisticated so they pick something that has stealth elements

People who shittalk Metal Gear are a dime a dozen but rarely will you see any shittalk Thief. This, of course, cope and seethe from Thief fans upset that the better franchise is more popular

This. There's no way anyone who played MGS in 1998 wasn't impressed.

Disagreed with everything but surprised you didn't mention the boss fights. I think everything besides the bosses have aged extremely well.

Bosses fall under combat. The combat in every MGS except GZ and V sucks. Who fucking came up with the idea of having to hold down 3 buttons to aim and fire a gun?

I don’t know why stealth games bother to have forced combat sections unless the combat mechanics are at least passable.

Isnt it just r2 and square?

You also have to aim with the D-Pad in MGS1’s case, which is AIDS. Most non-FPS shooters from around the same time had a lock-on system for aiming because they knew aiming with the D-Pad was clunky. Also, by the time MGS3 rolled around, the use “shoulder buttons to aim and shoot” became industry standard, so there was no reason why MGS3 couldn’t have done that. In fact, if that wasn’t enough, each gun in the MGS games has their own unique control scheme, which is just unnecessary.

If you hold square softly, he'll autoaim to nearest target
iunno, man. I was playing viddy before analog sticks were standard and never had problems with aiming things in either formats. Took awhile to get used to dual stick movememt and aiming. And FUCK 1st person jumping, until youre used to it

        >Who fucking came up with the idea of having to hold down 3 buttons to aim and fire a gun?
The same person who decided to make a stealth game rather than a shooter with "stealth elements". It's your punishment for getting caught retard
And the boss battles in these games are always so gimmicky that pretending they fall under the purview of normal combat doesn't make any sense. You don't beat Vulcan Raven by shooting him

There is a free pc version floating around, but it requires a bit of a workaround with mounting discs to make it work past title screen. If you have some money burning your pocket, it's available on GOG.

Kinda feels like the stealth genre is in a rut. Most stealth games allow you to go Berserk mode on your enemies and doesn't punish you for going in loud. I think the last pure stealth game I played was Styx.

They really haven’t. At least in Tenchu, it doesn’t take 5 button presses to accomplish what could be done in 2.

Never understood the purpose of circumcision. I wash my genitals and ass in the shower.
I'm sure it all made sense for desert tribes 3000 years ago.

its probably the most normie stealth game of all time, but that isn't a bad thing. if you want something more in depth try the thief games or spilter cell chaos theory. mgs is FUN though which counts
