        >Rise of the Ronin that high?
Is it really that good? I was thinking about pirating it when it releases for PC but the combat seemed meh. It's a shame they cut out Nioh's stance system but I guess that would've filtered out the lowest common denominator and hurt sales quite a bit.
How does it compare to Wo Long because that game was shit.

The stance system is still there, it's just not customizable because theres nearly 40 stances across 9 weapons, It has wo longs parry focus with niohs stances and most importantly has shuriken cancelling.

          Anonymous

          No, it's not.
It neuters the Nioh formula worse than Wo Long did. The stance system is way worse than Niohs because:
          1. It's dripfed over the game PER WEAPON meaning you'll get stances for weapons you don't want to use over ones you do.
          2. Stances have levels that, once again, are dripfed PER WEAPON.
          3. Stances do add new martial arts and square mash but they're neither stronger nor weaker than other stances. Ultimately it just adds different martial arts skills (most are bad).
          4. The stances is just a lazy rock paper scissor system. Instead of giving weapons strengths and weaknesses and skill trees to let you focus on solutions to weaknesses or leaning int strengths you have one homogenized combo across all weapons. Weapons have no more stagger or weight than the others (in that odachis don't floor/stagger any more than a katana) and enemies will take more/less/neutral damage based on their stance versus yours.

TN are streamlining and homogenizing everything about their formula to be unplayable bland normie slop. Ronin is basically a nu-Ass Creed with less weapon individuality than Valhalla had AND less character customization.

          Anonymous

not really. Ki pulses have to be timed, and that's the big difference. The basics of it is that you have to trade ki regeneration by pulses + nice bonuses but having a slower rythm and staying defenseless VS getting more attacks in and dodging. From this, you understand that not only it is important to time your attacks and windup animations in between your enemies' (like fromsoft games), but also, when possible, the rythm of those ki pulses and recoveries. This creates a flow in combat that is so "calm", so zen, that it makes you, the player, feel exactly what the mechanic is supposed to emulate.

this is mostly amplified due to the dogshit rpg progression system nioh has, i do think flux is kind of stupid though because theres no reason not to do it unless you're shit at execution, its just another input barrier, you always want to flux2 over flux1, waiting for pulse is for morons and only dodge pulse is for shitters

In my defense, the ingame description is fricking shit, and I always assumed it simply meant its same as flux1 but more efficient or something.

How do people even do flux2 when youre using default controls? Since fluxing2 from midstance to high requires you to press bottom and top face button immediately after lol, thumb travel time is too long

I'm personally using R1, R2 and X for those, so for me its not an issue, but I dont really see it being convenient for face button users, unless youre using paddles of course.

      >constantly need to tap a button to restore stamina in a forced timing minigame instead of just giving the player a decent amount of stamina to pull off combos
assuming you got the 5 minutes into the game to unlock flux, you could get it back by stance switching or dodging, so you get stylish stance switch combos and have to manage your stamina to a degree and can't just mash your light attack
      >the player IS able to pull off long combos without this after upgrading stamina enough but then the combat devolves into beating up punching bag enemies
again, your supposed to use flux to extend combos, not just mash a single attack brainlet
      >choosing more than one weapon results in the weapon experience you use to improve your capabilities being split and harming you in the long run
no it isn't, you can max out the skill trees for every single weapon type in a single playthrough. You can switch between weapons to handle different situations or for a single combo if you can figure out what moves setup well into switching into a different weapon. You can use a fast weapon like tonfas or dual swords to quickly sneak in hits and then switch to a big weapon like axe or odachi once you've ki broken them. You were filtered by being too stupid for the system.

It doesn't. Nioh is literally a Tekken/SF stance character reduced 3 stances, with practically no combos besides canned strings, no execution, no counter states, no just-frames, minimal hit states, minimal juggles, etc. Lei in Tekken 4, a 22 year old version of a character from an old game, has more stances, more execution, more options, more hit states, etc, than the entire Nioh franchise.

    >Yokai are straight up weaker than they were in Nioh 1. Namely yokai pools are weak as shit, red ki mechanic allows you to severely punish yokai even further
    >Yokai burst mechanic is moronic, massive reward for parrying a single attack. Very few attacks in the game that are actually tricky to parry.
Probably some other stuff I forgot about since I haven't played in forever.

Nioh 1 combat is better, the way Yokai attacks allow you to extend combos and cancel animations makes Nioh 2's combat feel sloppier as you always have a get out of jail free card for the your 2 big weaknesses (running out of ki, being caught mid attack). Perfect Ki Pulses no longer being required to clear Yokai Realms makes position and timing less important too.

When you play well in Nioh 1 you're an absolute god of spacing and timing. Nioh 2 is a better game overall but the combat specifically was more solid in 1.

This guy gets it. I'm honestly convinced most nioh "fans" on Ganker have only played 2. I noticed a lot of these issues in the fricking alphas and complained about them but 2 improves so much other stuff that I forgave it. Looking back now it does kind of suck. Outside of depths, combat is way too easy to "break" without relying needing any special builds or abuse gay magic.

It's ultimately disappointing. It's still hard to go back to Nioh 1 though because the absolute best thing about Nioh 2 is the massive improvements to most weapons. It's really hard to go back to Nioh 1 after using 2's spear and tonfa.

Fricking dipshit. The only action game that lets you cancel any of your moves into a defensive option is Bayonetta and that's because that game is specifically designed around that mechanic.

You are the BIGGEST and DUMBEST gorilla Black person I have ever had the dismay of coming across.

The mechanic you are talking about is NOT the same as cancelling a move. You are describing a unique thing team ninja games have that there isn't a word for really. In Ninja Gaiden (and subsequently Nioh+Wo Long and probably SoP and RotR) if you hold block during the recovery of a move, you will be in a blocking state but this does not magically cancel the recovery of your move meaning you can't do other actions, it just means that if an attack connects it will cancel the recovery of that move and put you in a block state. If you think this is in any way similar to something like Nioh or Bayonetta where you can cancel the entire startup, active, and recovery frames into a dodge that gets you out of danger then you should be barred from ever discussing action games again.

I like the animation cancels because it means I don't have to sit around waiting for the boss to do something to safely attack it. Against enemies without hyper armor, this doesn't really matter, but in some cases it's nice to be able to just attack a dude instead of sitting there for 5 seconds waiting for him to do something, unable to attack because he might trade attacks with you the instant you swing. In these cases, I'll still stick to low commitment stuff like low stance lights or sword of discernment, because I'd rather be able to dodge away than have to dump anima into remaining safe, but I have an option in case the boss immediately attacks me. Only feral counter goes too far in being a get-out-of-jail free card IMO due to its anima cost of 1.

I do want to go back and check out Nioh 1, though. I greatly prefer Nioh 2's combat, but I also did everything in the first game from WotD onwards as either a storm kunai spam or living weapon Odachi build, so it's not like I have a good point of comparison.

Same. I just went and gave ds2 another chance. Turns out it’s a lot better when you don’t play it back to back with another game in the series.

Did the same. I like it more now that it's not the "main" game and I can just enjoy it as its own thing, rather than [current Souls game].

This is not something that happens often. Nioh's system already allows you to be pretty aggressive without the need of baby mode yokai skill cancels. Just fricking use low attacks.

For me it's the fact that you only get one (1) attack slot that isn't part of your dinky little light combo, and of course you're going to use the one that dumps posture break. Tools running off universal ammo is just a twist of the balls after the kick.

If you were playing Fromshit for the combat, you were legit moronic. They're adventure games, and in that regard literally every one of them shits on Nioh in terms of levels, exploration, atmosphere, enemy and boss design, etc. If you're playing Nioh for the combat, you're still moronic as there are deeper and better franchises, including TN's own NG. The appeal of the game is almost a mystery to me unless someone is graduating from Diablo games and wants a more shallow Diablo game with better combat. I guess you could say that for graduating from Souls too; Nioh is a dogshit adventure game with better combat.

You have to be basically autistic to play the game after the first playthrough since it's full of missions that are just the same level but you start in a different part of it. So by the end of the game, you've already beaten it twice. The game the goes on for another 4 playthroughs where all your previous progress is moot since "real items" don't start dropping until the 5th difficulty. It's more like Diablo, but when the pain of having 2 more pointless difficulties. You may love it.

I liked DMC 3, 4 and 5, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma (it just goes to trash during 2 wtf), MGR was cool too, Bayonetta meh, HiFi Rush was carried by the setting.

And my experience with Nioh 2 has been: if you have patience at first it's kinda cool because you're learning so much but then after 5 hours it starts to feel more like a chore, the environments are ugly, can't understand weeb language, I don't like the music, the story doesn't pull me, why is there so many items, so is this just dps spam game, what is this even, my feet hurt I wish I was at home juggling enemies.

How is SoP though seriously? I played the demo originally and the thing I didn't like is the create-a-combo system. I usually like to have multiple options available to me at once and in SoP iirc your abilities are tied directly to after specific actions/sequences. So if I use my basic attack once, my only options are another basic attack, the ability tied to that combo sequence, or my job ability right? and that's pretty much the entire game? I know some job abilities have more going on i.e. mages have multiple spells to conjur or I think ninjas have ninja tools but other than that...where does depth or variety come from that isn't predetermiend in the create-a-combo menu?

I played Nioh 1 up till ending island , but i got Nioh 2 a few weeks ago , what weapon is a good begginer pick in 2? In 1 i used katana , spear and then some odachi + backup kusarigama, kusarigama was very enjoyable since i could make up Ki pulse stamina drain (i suck at timing good stance switches) by staying at range (especially in the 1v1 dojo missions)
I really love the feel of Nioh but i think i kinda suck at the game, also im 100% making edward in 2 once it installs, he looks so cool.

Yeah. Duals are also very good for stacking debuffs on enemies if you have any element imbued in it. To me it's got the best mobility out of all the weapons, second only to the Katana, specifically because of Mind's Eye. I've finesses so many bosses just by doing it correctly. Also, get Flash Attack. Switching weapons and continuing a combo with it is a rush.

It'd be disingenuous to pretend there's no clear inspiration especially in certain mechanics and level design but you can't play these games like From games, and if you do you are doing yourself an incredible disservice, not just from the amount of depth and the sheer level of bullshit you can pull off but from the way the amount of replayable content and NG+ bonuses legitimately kick Fromsoft NG+'s ass up and down the street

  54. 3 weeks ago

    no
there's really no back and forth in nioh 2 combat, it's either you railroad them or they railroad you
the dominant strategy is to create a combo string that never allows your opponent to get a move off that you just repeat over and over again
it means that once you unlock that combo things get old real fast especially since the enemy pool is really small
also the yokai abilities are gay and not fun

I have done sl1 rl1 and bl4 on fromsoft style games. and have beaten all bosses in the gauntlets of strength in sekiro. along with charmless, bell, runs.

I just enjoy this type of combat but Nioh1 felt off to me. I didn't just feel weak, I felt like I am fighting the bosses wrong or something. like how I played lies of p without the parry for the first half
    I want to like them

Nioh 2 just adds a few new things, like Yokai Abilities, but aside from that, it's the core gameplay is still the same. If you're having trouble clicking with it, hit the Dojo and try to learn the mechanics of the game there. There are Dojo missions that'll teach you how to do stuff, but there's also a dedicated training area where you can spawn a few enemies and test things out, and it's the best option for learning how to play this game, 100%. By the way, the first game has a Dojo too, if you missed it.

      Anonymous

I'd say enemies in 2 generally have less bullshit and more balanced, sans 2 or 3 bosses.
      >I didn't just feel weak, I felt like I am fighting the bosses wrong or something
1's combat does feel kinda janky but Nioh is not meant to make you feel like the weak one, especially in 2. It's the opposite, if you play it right you're the one who get to overwhelm your enemies.

      Anonymous

      >I got real bored on the first one and it felt extra difficult to an unfair degree.
Nioh 2 is even more unfair than Nioh 1. Prepare to be swatted like a fly by even the most basic enemy and you have to work tremendously hard to avoid enemies from even so much as breathing on you. Every single enemy is essentially a mini boss that can kill you in 0.2 seconds while you have to hit them a good 20 times. This game sucks and is the pinnacle of artificial difficulty.

You probably were missing some things. It's pretty normal to have a rough transition from Souls into Nioh, since it's so similar on the surface you tend to want to transfer your Souls playstyle over to a game where it doesn't work as well.

iframes are less generous, so you either need to really know the timing of an attack, or you need to rely on positioning/blocking.
Blocking is more worthwhile, especially if you have medium/heavy armor. I recommend getting 200 toughness (a stat on armor, roughly equivalent to poise and shield stability rolled into a single stat) while being at <70% equip load, as this makes your blockingn pretty decent and gives you some hyper armor on basic attacks. 200 is a breakpoint, so 199 is not enough.
Very important regarding blocking: you can escape stunlocks by blocking, even when dodging would not work. The reason for this is that if you get hit while holding the block button, you will simply cancel your hitstun animation into a block, but you CANNOT cancel hitstun into a roll in the same manner. If you're being combo'd, often a good thing to do is hold block and mash roll away, this will make you block the next attack in a combo, then get some distance.
Consequently in Nioh, being hit while at low ki is MUCH more punishing than being hit at full ki. You will lose some ki when hit, then you will probably have to block the next hit in the enemy's combo, which will drain more ki. If either of these drain you to 0 ki, you will go into a stagger state, where you will take even more damage from the next hit. Getting hit at max ki, you might lose a third of your health, block a hit, then dodge out of range of the next hit. At low ki, you get hit for 1/3rd health, get guard broken, then get hit while staggered and die.
Offensively, some attacks do good ki damage to enemies. Use these. A human with no ki is staggered just as you are. A yokai with no ki loses all hyper armor.

        Anonymous

Hit character limit, but one last thing: learn yokai weak spots. Most yokai have at least one weak point, typically their horns which glow bright yellow (hence you might hear this called "horn breaking"). Striking these will break them. This always staggers them, and will deal massive ki damage. That gives you a big opportunity to get your offense started and dump some damage on them. Sometimes you have to strike the weakpoints during certain animations, and usually once broken, they remain broken and cannot be exploited again, but it varies by enemy.

      Anonymous

the early game is incredibly punishing because you don't really have access to a ton of options but once you're past yatsu no kami you're basically good, shit going into ng plus is basically only just getting started. by the time you even think about making builds (which you shouldn't bother with on a first run anyway) you're a literal demigod, the scaling is absolutely absurd

What other games have good sword combat?
I tried the DMC series but it felt kinda moronic with the fact the dude is swinging a giant sword around like it's a dagger

    Ninja Giaden obviously

I've beaten Yatsu no Kami, the game honestly feels really fricking hard because they introduce too many things at once and coming from dark souls to Nioh really feels awkward because you're not used to it, frankly i'm still trying to adapt to some thing like stance switching but i honestly feels like i'm making enough progress after beating Yatsu no Kami.
Another thing that's not really clear enough is the stat distribution and Ninjutsu/Omuyo magic system, i honestly just became aware of it after beating the boss but i'm still not sure on what exactly to do with it

Yeah it can be misleading in that your instinct is not to block without a shield but blocking is pretty strong in Nioh and dodging often doesn't give you enough distance and iframes pending the attack received and your weight/ki. Dodging is basically to take heat off your block when needed.

Stat wise the returns on damage stats is really low compared to souls. Like, sure, if you're using spear and put in Heart you get some damage (IIRC might be diff scaling) but the main benefit and goal is health. You basically want to stat to comfortable survivability, to wear desired armor, and achieve spirit beast stat bonuses. Ninja/Magic have dedicated builds (like a caster) but you'll probably want to dive in here regardless of build as basically every build applies elements/status and there's oodles of buffs/debuffs/qol. Point wise there are thresholds that unlock deeper parts of the tree (the stat caps unlock missions to do so) i forget the caps so you'll have to google. I think maybe 18 and then 25 idk. After all that THEN you can stat for +damage to your weapon scaling but until NG++ all your damage will come from using at level weapons.

Leaker who leaked wo long and rise of the ronin before they were announced claimed around 2~ years ago that Nioh 3 and Ninja Gaiden 4 were in planning stages. I mean, it makes sense I guess. Nioh 2 is 4 years old right now and will like be 6-7 years old by the time they finish Nioh 3.

We have no confirmation on what their next step is though. We don't even have confirmation of RotR DLC (though it's likely, considering past + ending cutscenes teasing them)

Yes, especially in relation to TN games that came after. Wo Long and RotR flaming shit.

There are a few things I disliked about the game.
It has really shitty description for skills and mechanics sometimes. It was a pain to figure out what's actually Anima, Amrita and then AMRITA GAUGE and some other shit with gear attributes doing what. Sometimes crafting restrictions were obscure too.
Then there were couple of actions only available through pressing a separate button first, so I had to figure out of I am pressing the right buttons at all or just fricking up the timing...
And whenever I wanted to look up something people would talk about pressing R1+triangle and shit. Like frick off I use mouse and keyboard, what the frick are you people even talking about.
Still one of the best games I ever played.

Ultimate Courage and Barrier Talisman. Ki pulses are still helpful to use, but you're not totally fricked if you don't.

The duo boss fights are probably my least favorite shit in Nioh 1 and they use it WAY too much. Is it any wonder why most people just cheese it with an infinite Living weapon build?

Nobuhomie+his wife were interesting since they played into each-other's styles nicely with the aggressive chaser/slow ranged hazard pair.

am i missing something with this combat? ive only played through it once with exclusively the hammers and it was really fun learning which moves i could combo into others and getting those ki pulses while switching stance was really satisfying but i got pretty good at it about half way through the game and then the stratagies i figured out worked up until the end. it felt like going through the motions rather than adapting to my opponents.

You got too comfortable playing the same way, I guess? It's good to try and spice things up. Maybe try learning new combos, or a different weapons. I tend to do that somewhat frequently cuz I get bored rather fast.

    >Souls is bad because you just roll
then how do you defend these Nioh invul frames? https://litter.catbox.moe/85oujf.webm

Playing for the first time btw.

The Feral dodge is doing exactly what it's supposed to do. It has more i-frames than the other dodges, so it's working as intended, plus it costs anima to use. So, while you can spam it, you'll run out of it eventually if you don't attack to gain more anima. It's one of the many tools you have for dealing with enemies, plus dodges work differently depending on what stance you're on. With souls you have a roll, blocking and attack, which is kinda boring when compared to the tools you have in Nioh. That's all it is, Nioh just gives you more tools to deal with enemies.

      Also you still died, lmao.

God bless you for posting webbums. As a side, this game pisses me off. I can't find any semblance of fun in this. I beat that first gorilla motherfricker in the starting mission, but it killed any kind of enjoyment to be had. Stats don't seem to do jack shit, enemies have inflated numbers, and the stamina system just pisses me the frick off. How do you have fun in this game? Is it like the Tales games where you have to waste like 50 hours to get to the fun part?

              Anonymous

idk it was fun to me from the start, if ur having to look for reasons to play then that prob means its not ur game

This game isn't exactly about stats, it doesn't matter much if you have high stats if you don't know how to play the game, your movesets, your combos, your items and so on. You can have the most basic gear and stats and still crush any given mob if you know how to use your weapons and tools. Still, ttats do matter, and you'd do well to just read the discription on what each stat scales with what, cuz it's not just about pumping up strenght and vitality and cruising through the game. The game is fun if you like to beat the frick out of enemies with style.
