Is this worth buying and playing?

t. only played yakuza 0

Bought it on PC today. Played about 3 hours. I played Yakuza 0-1-2. I think they're all the same game. Judgment differs a bit because you're a detective and you're doing detective stuff. But the detective stuff you're doing is a bit boring. Otherwise you just fight thugs just like in Yakuza games. Right now, to tell you the truth, I feel like I'm being robbed since I spent 40 bucks on this shit.

Judgment and Lost Judgment are both great, probably two of the best overall games in the entire franchise. It's set up a lot like a procedural drama in its presentation which is neat and the characters are pretty good. LJ has a bunch of gameplay and QoL improvements but the story is definitely weaker, however. But it's not offensively bad and has Amasawa.

I have been playing yakuza since day one so I'm biased. judgment is really good imo especially if your a fan of akiyama's fighting style. its hard to say if you only played 0, there is no karaoke but the combat and story is solid.

Yes. It has a bit more compelling story than yakuza zero because its a proper detective story and fewer anime shit moments like yakuza does.

I saw some quick reviews about the next installments and I think they are not for me. They are too many and look and play exactly the same in order for me to stomach every one them. Modern yakuza games for me jumped the shark on the last scene of yakuza 0 where majima turns from a respectable madman into an annoying joker fag for the rest of the series.
Id rather play the original ps2 version instead.
I heard that lost judgement is a unnecessary sequel as well.
At least both yakuza and especially judgement, ended on a very good note and there is no need to bother with the sequels.

It's great. Yagami is a fantastic character and it has easily the best story in the series.
Combat is fun, but detective work can be really (REALLY) tedious. You should be fine if you don't do every substory.
Also the pacing is a bit weird and for the first half of the game it seems like nothing is really happening, but believe me it's worth it. The final chapter is fucking insane.

yeah, its better than the first in every way except for the side content imo.

Yagami in LJ combat sections is the equivalent to Kiryu in Yakuza cutscenes. Yagami is a fucking demon. He is so much stronger in LJ with his 4 styles that play so effortlessly compared to any iteration of Kiryu. Even 0, because of how it has to balance heat levels when Yagami's heat is just used to make him even more ridiculous. When everyone said Y6 feels slow and sluggish because of the switch to the Dragon Engine, LJ feels like a complete fuck you to that with how goddamn stylish and fast Yagami plays. Even it's Kaito DLC feels good to play. And you get to beat the shit out of as many teenagers as you want. It's great.

Combat is the best of the Dragon Engine, side content is a mixed bag, substories are more miss than hit outside of the School Stories, exploration is better because of the skateboard bosses are pretty good, music's alright, main antagonist is one of my favorites. The story depends on if you like the subject material or not because a lot of it gets drowned out by people complaining about Yagami's main argument.

The story is a step down from the first one in every category, the side content is great and Kuwana wasn't as good or as threatening as Kuroiwa. Also the pacing is even worse in LJ than in JE.

    Lost Judgement is fun

But is it worth playing Judgement AFTER playing Lost Judgement? In other games like the Souls series playing the older ones kinda felt like a drag after playing the newer ones so I imagine it might be a similar situation.

You only have two styles and less skills, crane is practically unusable due to the block bouncing but its still satisfying on it's own way. It makes you earn your juggles for example because you need to know which finisher launches exactly to cancel with EX mode and catch them in the air, its pretty fun and also more balanced at the cost of having less tools and stuff to mess around with.

          Moose

Tiger's fine it's just slow and far more overpowered than in LJ but bounce blocks force Crane into being unviable outside of EX Burst triangle spam. You pretty much have to do entire combos into the open not hitting anyone then land the rest of the combo on the guy. Or you go from an EX Burst combo (Since it can't be bounced) into dropping the EX Burst to get some finisher hits to land on an enemy. You can use normal combos because every time you land a hit on a group of enemies each one individually has a chance to randomly bounce block you making the square attacks almost completely unusable unless you're in a 1v1 situation, but when you're in that situation there's no reason not to be in Tiger.

Wall attacks are also quite viable since enemies rarely bounce you when you try it but they're kind of stingy with leapfrogs and slides working. Leapfrogs work fairly well but sometimes you get bounced and that sucks.

Keep in mind LJ has slower stance transitions (But they're still able to be done mid-combo) and none of the buffs you get from doing something in the style. LJ also starts you off faster than max speed in Judgment whereas Judgment at max speed is slower than 6 at max speed. Seriously, if you go from Judgment back to 6 and compare Kiryu moves like he's got no weight at all and attacks like Goku when he took off his weights.

Nah, finish mainline yakuza first. Lots of stuff happening with main characters in newer games soon, so you'd at least want to be up to date on that.

Also mainline is better than spinoffs, including Like A Dragon in my opinion

Also Yakuza 3 is the most comfy in the series.

I'm just like 4 hours into the game and everything seems like a downgrade from Yakuza.
The combat sucks, the perks suck, the sidequests suck, the main story might be interesting, but unfolds so slow.
Pretty much every single addition is not good: tracking, using keys, walljumping (who the fucks wants to keep running into walls?), lockpicking, slow AF looking for clues, the questioning might be interesting but since you can select everything and the XP is negligible is just forgettable.
Part of what made Yakuza great was the sidequests and the reaction of seeing a one man army deal with stupidity, they had all at least a story arch and most of them some twists. The sidequests to this game are bland "there's a panty snatcher, ok I got him", "my husband might be cheating on me, Yes he is". It doesn't help that Yagami is such a wet blanket of a character.
Am I wrong ? What I'm not seeing?

      >they had all at least a story arch and most of them some twists.
I'd say you've got rose-tinted glasses. So many substories in Yakuza are filler that's straight up just scams or extremely short battles and nothing else. I could easily boil down one of Shinada's substories to "There's a girl being sexually trafficked. Okay I stopped it". 3 even has a substory where Kiryu knows it's a scam, takes it, and beats up the people involved in it and that's it with the only interesting thing about it being that there's a Spongebob joke in it.

The panty snatcher you're talking about is a comedy substory and the entire point of it is that not only is it a multi-part substory but it's an absurdist one at that. It is the definition of a man having to deal with stupidity.
      >It doesn't help that Yagami is such a wet blanket of a character.
You're still extremely early into the game. A lot of Yagami's character is based around events that happen later on and a lot of his guilt and self-hatred is because of his past. In terms of substories he's always acting like a normal guy dragged into nonsense and the game treats it as such, whereas Kiryu is always treated like a stoic who was minding his own business and tripped his way into a random event.

Judgment and especially Lost Judgment take significantly longer than any other Yakuza game to start. Judgment only starts at like chapter 6 and Lost Judgment only starts at like chapter 8. But if you don't end up liking Yagami that's understandable, a lot of people find him more mundane than the usual cast or just more like a regular guy who doesn't really act as expressive as the other people.

        Anonymous

I get it that it's supposed to be a comedic subquest, but it falls very flat compared to the more comedic Yakuza quests.
In the cheating case I was thinking how Yakuza would have done it, maybe Kazuma would interject and blame the guy for ruining his marriage to find out he was planning a party for the wife and actually being him ruining it. Or the woman was a relative and Kazuma tells the wife everything is ok, to then find out he was hanging out with prostitutes moments later or whatever.
The quest in Judgement felt such blueballing...

          Moose

          >but it falls very flat compared to the more comedic Yakuza quests.
But the same applies across the board. Quick example I can think of is the bump scammers in 3 who take four separate substories where they keep repeating the same "Oh no, I've broken my neck" and then on the final one they go to Kamurocho and get beaten up again at which point you have to save them from the local gangs they encroached the territory on.
FotNS is an entire game of the exact same kind of substories you're complaining about except you have to view it as Kenshiro doing them and you can only buy that for a certain amount of them.

Again, I think you've got rose-tinted glasses for a lot of substories here, even 0 had the toilet substory that if I remember right 2 did before.

The story is slow, very slow. It hasnt introduced any good mini games yet and im 4 hours in. and just like the others have said, the detective stuff is tedious and slow. If youre coming from yakuza, youll be asking, "why wouldnt you just break the flimsy door down" instead of lockpicking it. Only pros i see are the combat system that has multiple stances.
