My friend is desperately trying to get me to play Zweihander, but this man up to recently was a 5e only player who'd played 5e since it came out. I've never played it, but I've heard it's like a rip-off of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying or something? Can anyone elaborate?
it is a ripoff of WFRP, just get the 4e starter box and play that with your friend
The man has most of the books for Zweihander already, and has been playing it for months.
can't hurt to try it. especially if its free. ask to borrow the book with the pretense of looking it over. Understand its basically just warhammer fantasy.
4e is dogshit. 2e is better, but not by much.
The fuck you need a starter box? Just give me a core rulebook.
Don't tell me you need a shit ton of extra dice and accessories, that cost hundreds of bucks to make this game work.
nta but most people complain about how Crunchy WFRP4e is the starter set as less complex rules so it's less intimidating to most people
It's okay.
>but I've heard it's like a rip-off of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying or something? Can anyone elaborate?
I'm not sure what they is to elaborate on. The game basically began as the codification of a bunch of house rules that some dude had come up with for WFRP 2e.
There's a temptation to call it WFRP 2.5, since most of what it is is polishing and balancing WFRP 2e, with some judicious borrowing (and balancing) from 1e.
If you're used to WFRP 2e, it probably isn't worth the transition. If you're new to the field, I'd recommend it over WFRP 2e. Hell, you can even set the thing in the Warhammer world if your players are familiar with it.
Compared to D&D 5e, the game is much less magic, much more lethal, and somewhat fiddlier. I'm not sure it's necessarily the first game I'd recommend to someone trying their first non-5e game, but there are far worse.
I've also heard it's creator is a real piece of shit. What's up with him?
complete fag, ayala tier e-moron
No fucking idea, and I'm happier that way.
"creator" is a pretty generous thing to call him
"copypaster with the ego of michelangelo and the capability of slingblade is probably more apt"
Oh fuck, that bad huh? Tell me more I gotta hear this trash fine.
dannyboy can suck a log of sushishit out of my pert ass
you know while hes down there kneeling
He copied the game and then gets pissy when people make copies of it or accuse him of copying. Huge twitter rants and pretends he did anything against piracy. His licensing contract is WotC tier, taking a big cut and forbidding you from selling your own work where you want in exchange for stock art and a twitter callout.
Absolutely massive fuckhueg tome with a price to match. It's a decent enough system in the vein of whfrp2e imho. A roll under d100/d10 system. Imagine a settingless warhammer fantasy rpg and you get the idea. If you like highly lethal and crunchy gameplay then this game is for you. If you like tons of options for gear and being a schizo rat catcher or reenact Sweeney Todd and be a barber surgeon this is for you. If you want to play as fragile peasants who die of AIDS this is for you. The "setting" Era is roughly a 1400s-1600s pike and shotte type of affair. You could easily run a colonial American gothic sleepy hollow type game if you're into that sort of thing or if you want to, a Van Helsing inspired campaign. I like the art both inside the pages and on the covers. There are several other games that use the engine and I assume the game license but I haven't played them. The creator used to shill here heavily and still leaves a bad taste in the mouth of fa/tg/uys and with good reason; the dude was a massive cunt. That being said you can't go wrong with this IF you want whfrp in your own homebrew setting but then again nobody is stopping you from getting the pdfs of whfrp2e from cubicle7 and homebrewing anyway. Your call really. A similar game would be Warlock! a lighter type of osr warhammer/British rpg clone.
>settingless warhammer fantasy rpg
So, a piece of shit with the only decent things excised?
Fuck off, Danny. Your games are only worth pirating, WF2 is better anyway.
Fuck off Daniel.
It's a worse version of WFRP. Additionally, the creator is a cunt.
Oh, hi Daniel. No nobody is interested in you piece of crap even now that there's a lot of retards fleeing d&d, even those can figure out that your game sucks balls.
Have a nice day and kys
>Rare and irreplaceable knowledge lost
I knew this guy was a piece of shit already, but that hurts
You can easily still get this book from LibGen and other places, and there isn't a thing Daniel Fox can do about it, but honestly it isn't even worth it. There's really not any reason to use it over Warhammer Fantasy. It may seem like kind of a petty or insignificant thing to hate someone for on the surface, but if you really look into it, the guy is a serious piece of shit, and a copyright troll. I wouldn't mind if died.
It was a worse version of WFRP 2e when it came out, and WFRP 4e is a better version of WFRP 2e now. So the only thing it has going for it is an everpresent aura of smugness and being generally more setting agnostic.
It's shit
Zweihander is a decent dungeons and dragon
i'd rather play 5e
If you want more grim in your hammer just get Warhammer toft I use some stuff from it for my WHFRP
It's objectively worse than whfrp 2e. It not only adds unnecessary complexity, it's extremely fiddly. So much of the rules are poorly worded, the book is a nightmare to navigate, and there obviously isn't a coherent design philosophy (i.e, feels like rules are borrowed from several systems). It's simply a soulless copy. The art is shit, the creator is a piece of shit, and it completely misses the mark by trying to be d&d with le epic dark and grim setting.
And if, by chance, op is Daniel, kys.
It's a subjectively more balanced work than whfrp2e. Zwei overall does some serial number filing on the "Warhammer" parts of the d100 grim dark so that you can use the core system as a framework for your own setting. Just don't seek to license it to monetise your work because the licensing is stupidly against you. You are better off making your own system and filing the zwei serial numbers off then.
On the other hand WHFRP 4e is a subjectively more balanced work than 2e with actual updates, support and new content. If you want to monetize 4e content Cubicle7 aren't the worst companies either. Not the best, but not the worst. Like all businesses their licensing terms are favourable to them; not you and by extension you are getting in bed with GW who are a known quantity when it comes to fucking over small fry content developers.
Its rules are unnecessarily complicated to the point of being damn near unapproachable. Seriously I had to read the rules 3 times to make any sense of how shit works, and needed two tries to correctly build a trial character. And I’ve played dark heresy, black crusade, pathfinder 1e, and Call of Cthulhu just fine, just so you understand that I’m not dense or slow, this shit is just pointlessly complicated.
