12 isn't great. It's almost good in so many aspects but it falls short on them

      Anonymous

Functionally better, but it wasn't rebalanced to accommodate for all the changes, especially the second license board. They really needed to lean into gambits being required in boss fights and pause on menu being disabled by default.

        Anonymous

to me this sounds so strange because I just went on autopilot through the whole game with gambits and had a dull experience

          Anonymous

Gambits were such a shit design decision. At the time flexing your "ai" tech was in vogue, so being able to advertise that you can "code" your own ai in game was a big (at least perceived) selling point, but what that lead to was that the only real way to play the game was to let it play itself in combat.
If you actually played the game manually (as in, input attacks, spells, item commands, etc) it would take a god damn eternity, which is even worse than just sitting there and watching the fight.

It’s shit. It’s literally just the bullet points from the pitch with no actual meat to it. I would say "good". It was the last good FF game.

He's the only decent character imo. I expected to hate him at first. It's just silly that the Japanese think it's normal to make the only black dude have a bird that lives in his afro. Birds don't have sphincters. Which means, his fro is constantly full of bird shit. They just can't make a character who is also black, they always have to make them "something". Fran is a bunny girl, Barrett has a gun for an arm (kek), and Sazh has a bird that lives in his afro.
Imagine playing an American game where the only Japanese character has rice balls that live in his eyes? Or samurai swords for arms. That's not weird is it?

Honestly think FFXIII's combat is better.

      Anonymous

Both XII and XIIIs combat systems were great, but the difficulty of both games let you just get away with setting attack/heal gambits and mashing auto-battle to succeed at most of the game. If either one forced you to engage with gambits or paradigms properly, like in the endgame superbosses, they would be a lot more enjoyable.

Agreed, but 13's system wasn't flawed in concept. It was just way too easy and the story was absolute garbage, so there was nothing but the pretty visuals and soundtrack to keep you from getting bored.

        Anonymous

FFXIII forces you to use paradigms pretty often, and you're incentivized to do so for faster times. Gambits in FFXII are just a way to automate the entire system so you don't have to do anything, which would be fine if there was a higher layer that required some strategy (like paradigms) but it does not. It really does feel like FFXII's combat is unfinished, which would make sense given Matsuno's departure partway through. The replacement director just did a "good enough" follow through that didn't increase the depth but just polished everything as-is.

The similarities start and end with "balthier and fran are like han solo and chewbacca because they're partners and have a ship". They really fall apart when you try to equate Gabranth into Vader just because of the helmet and voice.
I hope you have a good explanation for the Occuria because they're kind of central to XIIs plot.

            >because they're kind of central to XIIs plot.
barely. They don't even really get resolved at the end. They kinda want Ashe to be the next king whateverthefrick, she says no, then they're gone from the plot. They just take it. The only one that matters is the one that gives Vayne Solidor the knowledge to make magicite and all that, and even she could have been handwaved away.

              >she says no, then they're gone from the plot
She only decides right at the end, at the climax on the pharos. You act as though everything leading up to the conflict wasn't caused by the Occuria.

                Anonymous

Not really. I mean, I guess by extension, since one of them supports Vayne Solidor and he's the one guy making the plot happen. The party is mostly super reactionary and basically was just trying to stop him, which led them to seek out king raithwalls mcguffins.
They make the plot happen because Vayne Solidor's ambition is to free humanity from the gods yoke - which they aren't really under and havent' been for hundreds and hundreds of years, since they haven't had a champion since Raithwall. You could easily substitute the focus of his ambition with anything else and the gods become entirely superfluous.

                >vayne solidor making the plot happen
That's how I KNOW you didn't pay any fricking attention. The ideal to regain free will was Dr Cid's motivation, Vayne was more focused on securing a peaceful reign for his pacifist brother, to the detriment of himself. It wasn't until extremely late game, after Cid dies, that he interacts fully with Venat.

You confused "Perspective character" with "Main character." Like Moby Dick or Don Quixote, we follow through the eyes of Vaan as he is bears witness for the main character's story. Now, whether the main character is Ashe or Balthier is more debated, but putting any focus on the blonde boy is misplaced.

                >Now, whether the main character is Ashe or Balthier is more debated
Anyone who debates this is a fool. Balthier is literally irrelevant to the plot. That's the entire point of his "I'm the leading man" repeating. He's irrelevant and he knows it, but he hates it and tries to pretend he is the master of his own life. When in fact he is just a fancy dressed hobo adrift on the tides of fate, and can never escape the shadow of his father no matter how far he runs.
He never amounts to anything in the whole fricking game until the last moment when he repairs the Bahamut's floatation rings and saves Rabanastre, and that was half a suicide ploy. If it weren't for the fact that he had an airship, he'd literally have nothing to do in FFXII. He makes no decisions, nobody listens to him anyway, he never defeats any of the enemies, he has no claim to the legacy of kings or the occuria or Vayne himself, he's just a petulant teen who is angry at his mad scientist dad.

And I don't know why are people mad when someone mentions Star Wars. Biggs and Wedge are names taken from Star Wars.
Also, Balthier and Fran look like copies of Han Solo and Chewbacca. Balthier (Solo) is only thinking about money and consider himself to be the leading man, while Fran (Chewbacca) is tall, hairy, and has fricking weird voice.

At least final fantasy 12 has a true gameplay

Rebirth is GotY, 16 is overhated but ultimately just "fine". They fricked up with their NG+ approach and I forgot basically everything in the story that didn't have to do with Bahamut pretty quickly. Basically all the Bahamut scenes were like 11/10 though.

    False.

    X and X-2 > 12, 13.

does the pc version of 12 have similar graphical issues to the 10 remaster? does 12 on pcsx2 while scaled 4-6x look better than the pc version? I don’t care for badly redone textures or AI so that’s why I’m curious

They fixed Vaans abs and now all the characters have actual shadows (original has blob shadows under characters). They also added bloom but I think you can disable that.
They didn't frick up the character models, just improved textures.

No because they weren't going for some moronic higher polygon models and botched the implementation the way they did in FF10 remaster.

Magic isn't hobbled on the PC version. If you want to cast more than just heals, go pc.

FF12's thing is that it's more Ivalice than Final Fantasy. This is either a problem or working in its favor depending on what kind of player you are.

I knew FFXII was gonna be good shit from the intro. People scoff at "being confused by terminology they don't know yet", but I love that shit.

Would you consider 11 to be before or after 12? The answer might seem obvious at first but it was only RoZ and CoP that came out before 12. Aht Urhgan which was a turning point and of course, everything after including the stories released up into the 2020s released after 12.

For many people ""real"" FF11 is just the main game and the first 4 expansions. Base game +2 expansions before, 2 expansions after. The game is mostly before 12 to most fans of 11. I liked the later stuff though

It has no flaws to me. It was perfect. Love every aspect of it. Especially the music.

I'll never get tired of tasteless plebeians getting filtered by XII. XII is unfinished, mishandled, crippled and gutted by Wada's management and the generation change, yet it completely outshines, objectively, every other entry in the series by scale, complexity and depth. It took Squeenix several massive failures over the course of many years to come back to near the same level with VIIR. No, I don't care what your opinions are, or that you're going to spout MMO/StarWars arguments back, because you haven't played it anyway if you say such.

Absolutely based. It has its flaws, but it will always be a masterpiece in my eyes.
