the cortex chip is just a tool for making copies, the reality of the situation is that they are all soulless simulations and the ark is completely pointless

              >soulless
Okay, the real non-retarded reason the ark is pointless is because it is only temporary. The circuits keeping it running will eventually degrade from radiation, or its orbit will decay and it will fall into the sun, or the minds in the ark will grow tired of their immortality. There is nothing the minds inside the ark can do to influence the outside world so they can never return humanity to earth or repopulate, and its questionable if they'd even be able to reproduce inside the ark itself outside of some half assed brain copy/merge/clone system. Humanity is doomed to extinction even if the ark is launched successfully. Ironically only the WAU is capable of returning humanity, at least some part of it, to the earth.

retard, they know that, and explicitly state that the plan is to just enjoy heaven for a thousand years or however long it takes for the satellite to break down (which in the vacuum of deep space takes a fairly long while).
the first anon is right, the reason why it's all pointless is that nothing on the ark is alive or can actually experience or feel anything, it's just data and computer algorithms n shit designed to replicate how people would think and feel, but that doesn't actually make it feel anything or become alive in any meaningful way.

Technically, since there is no being inside the ark that can have the experience of being in it, and no known being that could know about its existence, it's basically already kaput. Though, to fantasize a little about it, couldn't the programs in the ark be programmed in such a way that during those thousands of years it'd take for it to collapse, based on our counting of time, they could prolong that time into eternity? Then again, who cares anyway? All that happens in this game and whatever philosophical questions it asks is wholly speculative...

The ark is already pointless. There is absolutely no purpose it could ever serve, it's just humanity spitefully clinging to a facsimile of life and refusing to go out quietly.

Arguably, it can be seen as the "don't forget us" of humanity. Putting simulated people in there would at least put something of humanity out there until it's hit by some celestial body or drops down on one.

Assuming there's anyone to remember. Honestly, encountering a highly advanced species willing to pull you out and make you rejoin the physical world, like in that one TNG episode where they find the frozen business man and pals, is humanity's best bet at that point.

It doesn't matter if anyone actually finds the ark or does anything with it. The point of the ark, in this interpretation at least, is just to put something out there, to not have to admit ultimate defeat, to keep the illusion of purpose living on. The people who created and joined it were all desperate. They likely didn't make any plans about actually being found, they just wanted to do anything.

                >just a last resort cope from the pathos 2 crew after their incompetence ruined every other chance of actually preserving humanity
Pathos 2 was never meant to preserve humanity, they were just a geothermal power plant crew at the bottom of the sea who happened to survive the apocalypse. They were a few dozen people trapped at the bottom of the ocean, they never had a chance to save the world or humanity anyway because they only have extremely limited food (hence why the people at the last couple stations all starved to death except that one chick on life support) so they can't even make kids or anything.
Sure, the WAU was there, but it doesn't have a proper concept of human life so all it can do is put non-sentient AIs in corpses and pretend its alive, like Simon

Yes, and how does that happen? The file system just updates the pointers in the file table to reflect the new location of the data, it doesn't actually move.
Cut and paste is just copy paste with the original address removed.

So is copy-pasting. The only way to truly cut and paste a brain scan in Soma is to physically move the chip from one place to another. It goes without saying that this is impossible, given the circumstances.

Because there's this underlying, and usually true, notion that information presented in a game isn't lying to you. Because there has to be a degree of unconditional trust for the medium to function at all. So the idea that something the game tells you, and the protagonist believes, is just outright wrong is hard to accept. It's much easier to believe that another character was wrong than the protagonist/the player.

In Simon's defense, in his situation it's very easy to just outright refuse to accept that you're doomed to wander this underwater hellscape in total isolation no matter what, while some asshole copy of yourself gets to live it up in virtual and actual space. It's much easier to delude yourself into thinking you're gonna make it somehow. And it's not like he's the first to do so in the game, so we really get to see how everyone else arrived at the same conclusion.

When I first played I thought (based on the beginning obviously it wasn't long before i realized that wasn't the schtick they were going for) it was going to be all in his head like the brain scanner put him in some sor tof fucked up coma and his brain has him basically in permanent lucid nightmare mode.

In the end it's all just a coin flip. The coin flipped onto brain scan instead of brain transplant.

It isn't a coin flip though. It is explained, repeatedly, how it works and that it is copy and paste. She lies to Simon to get him to feel better about it.

Why don't they network the replicated consciousness into one

catherine said something about simon 2 being basically asleep for a week, she probably wanted to jsut get going.
if such a thing is even possible, i mean data doesn't really "move" through a wire like water through a tube, it's not the same material on the other end. One computer reads the information to be sent, taps out that information like someone transcribing a book, then the computer on the other end reads that and transcribes it to their database.
What two simon bots could do, even if they're two different consciousnesses, is every so often merge their memory libraries so that each consciousness has the same data to run off of so they stay the same "person".
Technically our two brain halves do this, they have a link between them were they constantly share information and so act as one but if you cut that link they start differentiating.

Didn't they use to "treat" schizophrenia by cutting those connections?

          Not schizophrenia, but childhood seizures.
I think they still do in some cases, but they've only ever done split brain surgery on cases where like, the patient couldn't live with the seizures otherwise.

Sadly its next to impossible unless they open sourced it. But Arx Fatalis is open source and nobody will VR port it...

Is it impossible? Someone ported Amnesia to VR https://www.moddb.com/mods/sclerosis-an-amnesia-vr-remake

          >1:1 recreation of the entire game on the Unity engine, making Amnesia VR possible;
That's not the usual VR hackjob, its an autistic amount of work. Good thing Amnesia is so simplistic but I think SOMA is much more complex on nearly ever metric.

So, if you were in Simon's shoes (minus brain injury), would you participate in the brain scan experiment, knowing what it gets used for? I like the idea of copies of me continuing to exist after I die, even if I know that none of them are really *me*, but on the other hand it sounds like a lot of these copies had pretty short and uncomfortable lives, even before the events of the game.

No. The last thing I would do is have soulless corporations get a thinking feeling copy of myself they can do with what they want to.

i would because i know that "I" would like to experience that regardless.

a brain transplant is still "death" since you'd need to turn off the brain to remove it in the first place
not that it matters since consciousness is not even a real thing

What's wrong? You said you don't have consciousness, I am agreeing with you.
I couldn't imagine someone who actually has a consciousness like me legitimately denying they have one. So the only reasonable conclusion is that anybody who says they don't have a consciousness, really doesn't have a consciousness.
          That's what a p-zombie is.

Like you would even know what a consciousness is, p-zombie.
See that's how you know the difference between a p-zombie and someone with consciousness, someone with consciousness wouldn't even think twice as to whether or not they're conscious. Since you don't have a consciousness you experience no more than a tree or an inanimate object. You may react as if you're real but there's really nothing there.
Anyways now that you've revealed what you are there's no more point arguing with you than there is arguing with a chatbot except maybe to influence it to be less annoying, like reprogramming a toy. You said it yourself, you don't exist, there's no actual consciousness perceiving your experiences..

                lol u mad
I mean I get it, you probably noticed you're conscious of about 5% of anything that is happening in your own brain at the moment, even while reading this sentence 95% of whatever the fuck you're processing goes beyond you

You will never have what I have, and I know it won't matter to you because you don't have a consciousness anyways.
