It is 2005.
You come back from highschool.
It is friday, and you have no real plans for the rest of the day.
You press the oversized power button on the yellowing plastic case of your Pentium 4 computer.
BEEP.
In the 5 minutes it takes for it to load you change clothes and grab a snack from the kitchen.
You sit down; the familiar glow of Windows XP's silver theme greets you.
You roll out the keyboard tray and give the mouse a slight wiggle to wake it up.
You double-click a salmon-colored icon on your computer desktop.
It takes a few seconds for it to load, but when it does, a mellow melody flows out of the cheap speakers positioned to either side of your heavy CRT monitor.
You smile. It's good to be home.

I don't get VNs. They are in this very weird liminal state of being not quite light novels, not quite text adventures, not quite puzzle games, not quite porn games.
Played fate just because of its status (and GAR memes), and was pretty bored. Excluding the part near the end where "mana transfer" happens and it triggered a genuine laugh. Because of all the fricking RDSWORDSWORDSWO I completely forget that it is ostensibly a porn game. Powered through UBW, didn't even bother with HF. And that's when I was a teen, when games with edge and breasts are supposed to be extra appealing.
Just want to say that it's kinda weird I can't stomach them. Maybe it's because I'm a racist, since I like wordy western CYOA games (shame there are like 10 of them) as well as CRPGs, but not JRPGs.
Or maybe it's because I don't have waifus, who knows?

Regardless, frick off with your gayass nostalgia bait, play a real bideo jame or read a real book.

As someone who started post-Zero, you'd still get a bunch of oldschool-eque discussion on FSN and Tsuki up until the gacha gained a proper foothold. Helps that back then VN discussion on Ganker was more lax. Nowadays Ganker is best for it, despite everything.

You're the LARPer you idiot. People only ever had the visceral kneejerk reaction to the redesigns because they took it as a sign that the Remake would be fricking terrible and a soulless cash-in that spat on the spirit of the original. It wasn't. We were wrong. The Tsukihime Remake is probably the biggest love letter any creator has written to one of their prior works, ever.
It's fine if you prefer the older designs. I do too, for the most part. But if you're still acting like such an insufferable giant homosexual about them, you're essentially holding up a sign announcing that you're a poser who's just desperately trying to fit in, because you somehow haven't gotten the memo yet.

it's very weird arguing with people like this. It basically boils down to "THE CONSENSUS CHANGED, therefore you need to change your opinion on the designs".

Type Moon fans have been so mindbroken about the current state of type moon and it's FGO dominance that they'll literally defend anything about it with incredible fervor just to recapture that nostalgia.

The amount of repeated content is a bit ridiculous but the second Roa dies and Shiki starts having a mini schizo attack it becomes way better than anything Near Side provided before that point.

          Anonymous

the repeated content is indeed very noticeable, also the end is kind of funny, shiki is completely losing his mind and both arcueid and ciel are too busy having a woman moment to notice, hilarious

Hisui's route is undeniably one of the better ones, personally I still cant decide if I like hers or Kohaku's more, or if it's even my favorite which might be the case
It has a lot going for it to, best schizophrenia scenes (stream of consciousness ones in particular, I believe thats what they were called), an actually normal heroine, and more background on what happened to the sisters back when they were young, leading to Kohaku route
Ironic how the route of the only normal girl has the most schizoid energy of them all.
Speaking of the sisters, it's kinda disappointing the whole "synchronizer" thing was never brought up again, at least to my knowledge, really hope they expand on that with Red Garden

I have to wonder if it will even make the cut at all, given it relied entirely on sex. I know Arc gets a fade to black in the remake but her backstory isn't quite as twisted as Hisui and especially Kohaku's. Also hoping the spider doc isn't used as a means to absolve Kohaku of all responsibility for trying to kill Shiki and Akiha.

                >I have to wonder if it will even make the cut at all
I fear that that will be the case, when I finished the vn and thought back on it it just felt like a way to make Shiki have sex with Hisui and somehow get him back on his feet again, because there was no way for him to actually face SHIKI otherwise

                Anonymous

Is the sync power only activated by sex? If I'm not remembering it all wrong, Akiha is syncing with Kohaku whevener she drinks her blood. Though in that case, Kohaku is just trying to push her over the edge to inversion impulse.

Hisui's route is by far my favorite. Definitely the most brutal thing Nasu's ever written IMO. It ends with everyone but Shiki and Hisui dead, and Shiki's got a time limit.

      shut up

No, it was bad, dude. Do you even remember it?

Like, everyone remember the sunflower field ending, but do you remember how it got there? It's basically the same lead up to the climax of Hisui's route, but where in Hisui's route, it all ends in a fricking bloodbath where everyone dies, in Kohaku's, they all just start crying, and then there's a time skip where all their problems get supposedly worked out off screen.

That's really bad. That's REALLY bad from a writing standpoint. You could feel how Nasu wrote himself into a corner. "Frick, frick, frick. This is the last route, so it needs to have a happy ending, but everything I have right now shows they're gonna kill each other." Then he just says they have character development off screen, and then Kohaku smiles at you with sunflowers in the background.

        Anonymous

From what I recall, Hisui's route was meant to account for both her and Kohaku but Nasu's mates or whoever tested the game hated Kohaku not having a route of her own so he whipped it up in a short amount of time. Shame too since stuff like SHIKI being amicable towards Shiki and skipping town or Akiha being the final boss deserve a proper shake.

        Meant for

        >I have to wonder if it will even make the cut at all
I fear that that will be the case, when I finished the vn and thought back on it it just felt like a way to make Shiki have sex with Hisui and somehow get him back on his feet again, because there was no way for him to actually face SHIKI otherwise

        Oops.

          Anonymous

they could also have Hisui explain what the synchronizers are before the fade to black, but I cant remember if Hisui does this before or while her naked cg is already on the screen, but that could make it lewder as a reminder of what tsukihime really was... (not happening)

Is the sync power only activated by sex? If I'm not remembering it all wrong, Akiha is syncing with Kohaku whevener she drinks her blood. Though in that case, Kohaku is just trying to push her over the edge to inversion impulse.

Sex is the best way for it and makes the synchronization work at its full potential, blood consumption also works but it's weaker and not the actual thing

It would make sense to retain the lewdness of the Far Side, but let's not kid ourselves. You make a good point either way, but with how drastically they changed up Ciel who's to saw the twins and Akiha won't get similar treatment?

Hell it just occurred to me, can a CERO rated game even have Shiki and Akiha hook up for real?

it's going to do what it did with the Arc sex scene. It'll set the stage, fade to black, and then cut back in with the whole "Ooooh noooo I did a HECKIN' rape-a-rino' shtick.

Remake works better in some scenes imo. I like that they replaced the really weird out of left field rape scene with Arc to Shiki just being unable to stop himself and slicing her into a bunch of giblets again

Tsukihime overall, but Fate does have some things better like better villains and higher production value

        Anonymous

Tsukihime since I prefer the setting and characters, but FSN will always have a place in my heart. The gacha and various non Hollow spinoffs can rot.

I prefer Tsukihime's setting far, far more than F/SN's even if both are urban/supernatural combination, but it was the former that made me like those settings, same with moon-related themes, and I prefer Shiki.
FSN was cool tho, but I prefer it slightly less over tsuki, the production value from tsukihime to fsn was an incredible jump to witness tho, seeing the sprites move during the prologue archer/lancer fight was awesome, same with its overall visuals and music

tsukihime was always the cooler setting with better characters, but it is hard for it to compete since it lacks the massive amount of media fsn has

        Based.
Reading the Tsukihime Remake was so unbelievably comfy. First time I've ever nostalgiagayged for a game so hard.

Fate, Tsuki is just too low budget. Barely any sprites, those shitty blurred photo backgrounds, and the same 5 music tracks over and over. That Fate also has a better plot in general is also helpful.

key sentence for breaking down muramasa coudl be "what do you define as justice".

I genuinely didn't get much about what Shiki's personality even is on a first reading besides "hey he could die at any time, did you get that life being fragile is one of the themes of this story"
at least Shirou is more strongly defined

I prefer Shiki's schizo-ness over Shirou's autism personally but they're both fantastic protagonists. Wish more VNs had interesting protags instead of the blank slate self inserts.

Shirou is definitely more defined in the original work (Shiki get's more in outside work like Kagetsu and Melty Blood) but he's also frankly nowhere near as fun or enjoying to be in the POV of, and can get grating. But he's not a bad protagonist at all
