I only figured out a couple years ago that some of the special characters between the words are grouped together as a single input, and if you click on them they give you an extra chance or remove one of the false words.

Unironically low IQ issue. Good fricking lord I can't imagine being so stupid that you run into a problem that seemingly requires "quickload 20 times until it lets you through" as the solution, and not thinking "hmm maybe I'm missing something let's think outside the box a little".

I do wish luck affectes random stuff like this, but I can't think of a good implementation. Randomly getting it right on the first try doesn't work when the password is chosen the moment you interact with a terminal.

          Anonymous

maybe make the password have a chance to get overridden by the first guess

            Anonymous

That could work. It'd have to be one of those random thing you can track in your pip-boy since you'd never notice it anyway.
Passive functions for SPECIALs would be great.

      Anonymous

I'm pretty sure that is the method.
Unless you get really lucky click ROOTS randomly and get 4 right so it's obviously BOOTS, backout-restart is almost always the fastest way. 3 or 4 backout cycles and you're done.

Getting a flat 0 right is actually pretty handy aswell, if not moreso. Often times you can narrow things down to words ending in 'ing' or some such, getting 0 correct narrows it down to a greater extent.

I found this shit fun on my recent playthroughs. I just wish that there was more of a guarantee for Allowance Replenishes. That's the only thing that becomes annoying about it once you figure the rest out.

      Anonymous

yes, this and the fact that the amount of duds you can remove or if you even get a replenish are completely random, sometimes a terminal will have a shitload of those, sometimes even a very easy terminal will give you like 1, 2 sets of brackets.
also im not sure if its just my game or some mod i have installed but after a certain level the terminals just stop being difficult to hack somehow, there's less words to guess and a lot more special characters to click

        Anonymous

Replaying New Vegas and science level gradually makes less difficult terminals easier if that's related. The higher end seem to level out.

  7. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

It's still faster to just guess.

  8. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

I know the official method, but the real method is make three guesses, use all the parenthesis and brackets to remove duds and replenish allowances, then do three more tries, if that doesn't work, you exit the minigame and start over. It takes less time to do it that way than to solve it proper.

      Anonymous

      That is the official method.

        Anonymous

actually, the official method is to see how many letters your guess shares with the the password using that little x/x counter on the bottom, then figure out the password by process of elimination. But thats slow and boring, just like taking the official way to Vegas, so everyone who knows how to play does it the exploit way.

          >click word with ing, ous, etc. in it
          >3/x correct or 0/X correct
          >eliminate half the options off the bat
          >still back out at 3 guesses because it's faster than pixel hunting for brackets

tabbing in and out resets all the potential answers as well, which makes the whole thing take longer than just lawn mowing the screen for parenthesis.

clicking the 3 options until the door opens is faster than finding one bracket ever. thousands of hours of fallout by thousands of players made 3 guess + tab the default for a reason.

      Anonymous

      >he looks for refreshes
just tab back and E back in and get 3 new guesses immediately. The whole system is fricking moronic and there is a reason starfield removed it.
      >Not that the fatal blunder of using a spatial reasoning test to lock doors is excusable either
After sanding down the rpg into the thinnest slop imaginable to require your players to be above 80iq is a big ask bethesda. it took DSP 15 minutes to even figure out how to do 3 layers.

The lockpicking in starfield is the most awful system I've ever seen in my life

        Epic system

          Anonymous

it is literally a spatial reasoning test for like 12 year olds.
          >look at inner ring first
          >rotate pieces in your head to see where they fit
          >work outward
          >place pieces in reverse order

which for non 12 year olds/adults with an IQ above 87
          >quickly identify generation patterns because bethesda can't into procgen in ANYTHING
          >innately memorize what pieces go where and just jam them into place to always unlock every door no matter how many rings are there

it's biggest problem is that it's never not long and robs all pacing from combat or exploration. Like terminal hacking but without the shortcut of being able to lockpick 99% of shit behind a terminal instead.

What do you guys think of breach protocol from cyberpunk? The fact that the timer doesnt run untill you pick your first letter/number combination totally trivialises it in my opinion. You can quickly find them ahead of time and get everything in one second.

And F4 dumbed it down too. You can now retry as many times as you want after being locked out.
The valentine perk gives you an extra guess and halves the retry time. The science bobble gives you an extra try too.
The last rank of the hacker perk removes the retry time altogether.

I can crack locks in less than 10 seconds in any of the games so it’s not a problem for lockpicking. I enjoy doing the terminals sometimes but the payoff is always shit

Maxxed out stealth, chinese stealthsuit on, unnoticed (ofc), had the covert ops perk (which in TTW is supposed to be pickpocket-oriented) with a stealth boy for good measure.
Quicksaved and quickloaded so many times I didn't count all my failures. Ended up killing the guy and resurrecting him with console commands. It's not even that heavy of a weapon fyi.
