I wish ONE game, just one JRPG, would take into account whether you have x99 of every healing item, and if you do it plays a special battle where you have to fight a new encounter that forces you to megahealing every other turn, and if you get it to like 5% HP a cutscene plays where it keeps trying to use ultimate attacks and your party keeps chugging potions through it like they're pirates and it's the last of their grog, before finally killing while it looks on with furious disbelief that it got beat by a bunch of homosexuals that wouldn't stop downing pots for five fricking seconds.

I'm not an extreme item hoarder, I'm just cautious, once i determine how valuable the items are i adjust my usage accordingly

I don't. I sell everything in my inventory unless they're super essential

      this.
a well designed game should invite you to get rid of your items. I like how dragon warrior monster had a special shop you could randomly find. the shop allowed you to sell back anything at its purchase price. i would save everything for that shop.

The object of every game is to pick up everything possible and to create a dragons horde of bullshit. Every potion drank, cheese wheel ate or dollar spent is one less item in my treasure pile and I just can't allow that.

Because old JRPG hardwired that shit onto me by not givng me Items or a way to get them (even if it was hard), now I end up not using items that argubly could make may run easier.

I always have like 10 Somas when i reach the final boss in Persona games and i still heal using spells

I use consumables all the time. My line of thinking comes from playing too many strategy games so my brain says, "Spend it now not later". Letting a resource sit and do nothing is a waste.

I only hoard items when the game makes it more tedious to use them than not. Like in a lot of CRPGs for example having to go through so many menus just to quaff a potion I don't really need but having laying around anyway just isn't worth the bother. I'd rather just leave it in the bag of holding or sell it at the next merchant than interrupt the flow of combat just for the sake of using it.

I don't really know what game started it but I definitely feel like years of jrpgs have conditioned my brain to NOT use any items.

I almost never need to use them.
I'll use them if I need to, it's just that that almost never happens in JRPGs.

I don't hoard items, they simply drop from enemies and I never need to use or sell them because the game is easy enough without them.

Often times the normal encounters aren't hard enough to necessitate using them, but in a lot of games the items aren't even worth using.

Use this item to cast level 8 sleep way before you'll get that spell, oh wait it's ineffective. Sorry.

If I need to use items, it means the fight is hard. If the fight is hard, there is a chance I will die. If I die, any used items are wasted, so I don't use them until I am sure I can win.
When I get to the point where I am sure I can win, I no longer need to use items, because I am sure I can win.
If the fight is not hard, I don't need to use items, so I don't.

Everyone is giving me answers so I'll be specific.

I played Pokemon Red back when it was new. It was not my earliest RPG experience but it was one of my most formative and probably set a few of the trends that I have today. Including this shit. Because I used the rare candies as soon as I got them and I used the master ball as soon as I got it. Fast forward a year or so and someone on the school bus teaches me about the Missingno. Glitch. And how it effectively gives you infinite number of items. Well that was kind of a problem because by the time I learned about the glitch there were no more rare candies or master balls to use. This kind of set of precedent where suddenly I wanted to keep at least one of every item available just in case. And eventually it ended up morphing into this Meme over time. Nowadays I just use it if I got it again but there's always that suspicion in the back of my mind of what if I need it later.

you're not supposed to use items, only attacks skills and spells
