Literally just install Windows 10 LTSC and spend time properly debloating it. Despite what everyone tells you, it's actually entirely doable if you put the effort in, and the result is an operating system that actually works.

                They have different issues.
7 is mostly fine for old games, but doesn't have dx12 support unless you use vkd3d port from linux and some modern games (especially VN remakes).
10/11 is obviously good for modern games, but getting older stuff to run is a royal pain in the but or straight up impossible.
linux's weakness is some multiplayer games that refuse to work, but at least it runs both ancient and new single-player games just fine

You're kidding, right? Last time I used troonix you had to open the terminal to install just about anything. And IIRC there was this moronic concept of "making files executable" with chmod. With Windows, you just run setup.exe and it does the job for you.

          >name one tool
It's availability of packages in the package managers that's the main problem here. If package X is a requirement to run program Y but X isn't available in your distro's package manager, you have to jump through a number of hoops to get it working (if it's even possible in the first place). And I believe certain scripts don't work on different distros either. I don't have any specific examples in mind, but it's an obvious issue.

            >You're kidding, right? Last time I used troonix you had to open the terminal to install just about anything.
Last time I used Linux (yesterday), I didn't.
            >And IIRC there was this moronic concept of "making files executable" with chmod.
That doesn't require the terminal. Right-click file, click properties, click permissions tab, check execute permission box. But this may differ slightly depending on the desktop environment, which is why people may just tell you to use chmod (which will work on every Linux system).
            >With Windows, you just run setup.exe and it does the job for you.
Okay. If you run the Linux equivalent of a "setup.exe", let's say a GOG installer for a native game, then the installed game will be executable by default because there's no reason an installer script can't execute chmod for you. Only the installer itself would need to be made executable. And this is how I like it. In general, I don't want downloaded files to be executable until I explicitly give that permission.
            >but I don't like it
            Then don't use Linux.

Though the one point I'll concede to you is driver support, especially if you use Nvidia. But that's also not the fault of the OS, it's Nvidia being israelites. AMD makes their drivers open source and they're leagues better than on Windows.

Reality is; Linux is stuck in this position of wanting more people to use it, but also insulting people for not using it or claiming its not for them. It leaves the general perception of a Linux user to be seen as insufferable to the broader masses

If you're interjecting just to feel superior though, I'll wank your ego and say that most of these are valid issues on linux sans the support issue. I used Windows since XP and Arch for the last 3 years. Troubleshooting has always been a mixed bag for windows, on linux looking for solutions to problems is straightforward and simple, though sometimes tedious. Windows troubleshooting has a good one in three chance of requiring the use of a third party program to circumvent the problem entirely, or just outright break the functionality of Windows to get it to stop causing my problem. Great example is trying to play Back 4 Blood through gamepass and it causing a fricking memory leak in Windows Defender. And Defender doesnt let you disable it unless there is an "approved" antivirus on the OS.

I am not the anon you replied to in the beginning. I just listed off reason why I went back to Windows. I used arch for 2 months fully intending to not go back but I switched back after realising I'm subjecting myself to worse experience for no tangible benefits. I ended up going back to Windows 11, manually heavily debloating and customizing it. It took me two days but I haven't had to do any troubleshooting beyond that and have been using it half a year already with no issues.

you can look up mydigitallife for guides or chris titus tech if you want a simple "tool" that does it for you (it's just a bunch of scripts with a gui on top)

don't trust third party tools or custom isos, only ever get isos and exexutables from MS directly

waytards have a cope for everything. it's never wayland's fault, is it? it's all the other software. it's application developers. it's game developers. it's your hardware. your computer's too slow.

wayland adds latency because it is a compositing protocol. compositing will always be less responsive than single-buffered drawing. you can't change this.

I don't even use wayland. Gnome is just shit on both X and wayland. KDE has proper low latency wayland support and of course a compositor for X11.
                >wayland adds latency because it is a compositing protocol
Yes and an X11 compositor or tearfree do the same thing. You choose between latency and tearing on everything, whether's it's wdl or kde/gnome/DE/WM of choice.

Maybe if you're got a chinkpad. KDE runs fine for me. Low latency mode when I tried out plasma wayland was fine too, apart from wayland's forced vsync.

I mean sure KDE is relatively resource heavy as a DE, even if you turn off compositing on X, but it shouldn't be an issue on modern hardware. Personally I'd care more about it trying to run file indexing all the time than adding 0.5% gpu load.

          >a tool that makes using your computer so much easier and more efficient.
I would hardly call CLI more efficient and easier than a graphical interface. That is, after all, precisely why GUIs exist: they are easier to use than CLI.
What CLI ostensibly offers is better control, but that has more to do with the OS and the inherent design than the fact it is CLI specifically. Whether you're typing a command with flags or whether selecting options and pushing a button, whatever is doing had to be explicitly exposed to user. A GUI could do everything CLI does, if only someone codes it.
The problem is the philosophy of design behind windows doesn't allow that.

Very few Steam games from my library are even compatible on Ubuntu which is arguably the most popular Linux distro.
What I can play is mostly indie games what still have updates on 2023 like Isaac, Baba Is You, Super Hexagon; but not even a dozen of AAA titles run on my machine.
MAYBE Arch could have more compatibility since it's the distro SteamOS is based on, but I don't care enough to try.

No. Discord is literally the only program I've installed whose official DEB file is straight up garbage.

Yes. Even when Windows 7 was out for a few years and already considered the best OS, there where whackjobs who absolutely refused to move from Windows 2000. Sometimes it's because they have no reason to upgrade their PC and that's okay. But in the case of Win7tards still hanging on it's a special kind of ignorance.

      Anonymous

not really, the main thing that XP was missing was 64-bit. which the OEM/enterprise version later got but *for some reason* ms didn't offer this to retail consumers. regardless, this gave users a legitimate cause to upgrade as by the time 64-bit mattered, 7 had already superseded vista. whereas no actual necessary functionality exists in 10 or 11, just as none existed for 8. the only motivation to switch are companies arbitrarily deciding to drop support, and if you don't need their support, then there still isn't a reason.

                >quite amusing that the most virus-like problem you've had was windows itself
There's a reason as to why Microsoft had the shit sued out of them for how they rolled out Windows 10.

I will never use anything beyond Windows 7, 10 is aids and 11 is somehow even worse, if the time ever comes that I genuinely cannot keep using 7, which is unlikely, i'll move to a full Linux setup that doesn't do as it please and require the user to constantly guard against the OS itself bricking their systems.

yea yea and the guy that made the software for your production line made it in 1979 and is now dead and upgrading past anything made in 1985 will shut the plant down costing x amount of jobs.

The amount of messes i've had to clean up from people like you has netted me a lot of money.

                >yea yea and the guy that made the software for your production line made it in 1979 and is now dead and upgrading past anything made in 1985 will shut the plant down costing x amount of jobs.
No i'm a VFX developer and W10 is shit for developers, we need our machines to be working 24/7 as work stations during the day and part of render swarms at night.

Literally no one working with cutting edge technology in a production environment relies on anything beyond W10 because they need their machines to be oprational, when your machine can brick because it had a logiticech usb device plugged in during an update, it's a bad OS. W10 has been in development for over a decade and it's still a trainwreck.

That's not true whatsoever. I work at NIST and we upgraded to Win 10 6 years ago. Usually takes a few years to adopt a new operating system primarily because of safety concerns. Same occurred when the computers upgraded from XP to 7. That didn't occur until around 2012.

That's a per-country problem, not a Microsoft problem. Microsoft working with US govt to dominate the world outside the US is normal business. If you don't like it, you shouldn't be using Windows to begin with. But even the ragheads in Afghanistan and Iran are using it in places like nuclear power plants. Stuxnet targeted Windows operating systems, and the morons in Iran were using, guess what, Microsoft Windows. There's a reason the 3rd world remains the 3rd world, and not just because of being exploited for their raw resources by the world hegemon.

                >once a major unpatched exploit hits for windows
what counts as a major exploit to you? for people who understand computer security the only thing i'd consider a "major" exploit is remote code execution that doesn't require action from the user, e.g. blaster worm from the XP days. which is no longer a realistic threat because everyone has a gateway now so unsolicited messages are auto filtered by NAT. also nobody uses IE anymore so even solicited connections are far more secure than they were in the blaster days. how are you planning to get me through my NAT, firefox esr, and javascript blocker? why would you, the cybercriminal, bother to get at the 1% of win7 users this way when you have a much easier time finding lucrative 0-days to use against the 95% of users on poorly tested rapid release builds of win10/11 and chromium?

see as an IT worker your requirements are to secure PCs while keeping things simple to use for clueless boomers who click on everything they're asked to while running public servers that have to accept unsolicited requests. in large part that means you rely on the vendors to patch their stuff and hope it's enough. that's your reality and it makes sense for that domain. but that has nothing to do with me, or, if you're half as qualified as you're implying, your home PC. the only user on my network is me, and i'm smarter than you.

oh and, the loss of "critical updates" is a complete non-issue. i disabled them in 2013 because all of the ones they posted were non-threats to me because they require the user to run untrusted code or have an exposed network, neither of which apply to me. since then i've only taken standalone downloads for things that were functionally necessary like SHA-2 signing. i'm guessing you don't even read what's in an update before clicking OK, which makes you one of the dummies that better IT people have to cover for.

you are a fricking idiot. The most popular platform is always the target for the majority of hackers. What's more: windows 10 and 11 are riddled with black box telemetry of which no one is entirely sure what it is sending to Microsoft or exactly what is being recorded. That's more to do with the fact that windows hides as much logging and debug info from the user as possible. If a game crashes on windows, the best you'll get is a crash dump from the game's logger, if there is one. A linux user can add syslogs, mesa logs, dxvk logs and wine debug info.

Something just feels so incredibly wrong with the fact technology is only getting WORSE, you know?
Websites from the 90's and 2000's that are still up and running load at the speed of light on modern hardware. I always imagined the possibilities of website with dozens of links and images being able to pop up without a hitch on modern computers that have gotten so advanced. Instead if I want to read a basic fricking article it takes ages to load and I see pop-ups and embeds everywhere like it's a shitty piracy site. Basic shitty pixel indie games need insane hardware requirements when shitty budget laptops from the early 2010's can emulate gamecube games.

What the frick happened? One of the reasons I like Ganker is it's the only active forum I know of that doesn't take ages to load even a ten post thread. Every control panel ever put into Windows since 95 is still in windows. And clicking a prompt in one control panel will randomly bring up a prompt in another. Some of them literally have no reason for doing it that way because some of the functions you get for clicking these menus are done already by the same control panels. Clicking network info in the Settings page brings up control panel despite there being a network info page in settings that no one uses

It's like the end result of a UX team balkanizing and having a civil war.

they are slowly replacing control panel with settings, there isn't that much stuff left in control panel that doesn't link to settings
it's ugly but better than removing legacy stuff
they still kept useful shit like win7 backup and recovery
win10 was kinda embarrassing in UI department and while people like to shit on win11 it looks much better and isn't as much of a shitshow as win10

              >they are slowly replacing control panel with settings, there isn't that much stuff left in control panel that doesn't link to settings
You still can't do anything remotely power-user related without going into control panel or opening up Powershell (which is more work than using control panel). Which is the real crime of the matter: they genuinely just want to be Macs. complete with their "primary" user interaction with their computer being the most basic b***h settings imaginable while everything else is kept in the big-boy land.

Someone said it but Windows is an operating system now developed by people who hate Windows but love their Macs.

The target audience used to be tech literate because they were given the tools to be power users with their PCs and were encouraged to do so.
True, this is in part because operating systems of the past were far, far more unstable. and thus required users to be power users in order to use them.

But them becoming more stable, more user friendly didn't create a better operating system with happier users. It just made them indolent. A user should have the power to frick up their own computer.

Sure, but XP was the last big jump when it comes to normie friendliness

actually, if you just change the computer clock while offline, it works.
you can bypass security checks and whatnot
by changing the clock on a windows 7 machine

anyways, tell me more about how win 7 is vastly more secure then..a pile of dirt?

Patched out like half a dozen windows versions in the past. A hamster must have better pattern recognition than win7 screechers

Give me an example of using the terminal/powershell for anything. I've only ever used it for programs that simply don't have a GUI like yt-dlp and streamlink.

My dudes windows 7 is old and slow now seriously Windows 11 is so much faster and smoother and has cool features and suggestions for checking out other cool software you might like too I literally regret using ancient old Windows for so long before upgrading my gaming laptop to a better one with Windows 11.

It's unironically literally night and day how much better Windows 11 is. You're seriously ngmi if you're still using Windows 10 and 7 is cringe so stop coping and upgrade already.

    Windows 11 is K I N O and /ourguy/ now.

      >faster and smoother
Yet file explorer and the system is much faster.
      DPC latency is much lower.
      >cool features
Like what? I don't need anything more than what's already on Windows 7.
      >cool software
      such as?
      >just upgrade already
      cringe.
      >windows 11 is K I N O
      mega cringe.

You bought new hardware. Windows7/8/10/11 has nothing to do with the rest of your post. Also

      >gaming
      >laptop
You're an even bigger moron than everyone else in this thread.
