i do. playing fast means having to be optimal and make quick decisions. i mean, if you didn't enjoy real time decision making on some level you'd be playing a turn based game.

Timed gameplay I dislike but can deal with, the real middle finger is timed dialogue choices. 100% the only people who do that shit are fart sniffing devs.

      >timed dialogue choices
      >in addition to dialogue options that aren't fully explained
      >and the way devs fix this is with the most cartoonish morality system imaginable so the player just beelines for one option 99% of the time
      >try to punish the player for "not paying attention to their dialogue options" when you were the moronic Black folk forcing them to rush

I like indirect and forgiving timers. A ticking clock in the corner which gives you barely any time is moronic, but having some pressure is nice to force the player out of their comfort zone.

the use of a timer can be good or bad depending on how its used
Like the first time I played FF7, you defeat the boss and then set a timer and have to leave, it felt more impactful
Half Minute Heroes entire gimmick is beating the clock, the game wouldn't work without it

      Play Dead Rising.

Pikmin and Dead Risings timed gameplay made them better, its all about optimisation.

But there's also bad examples, like the Original Time Crisis.
The timer in that always counted down and remained the same on continue, so if you played bad and failed because you started a section with 4 seconds left, you'd continue with 4 seconds left. Conversely it did make you feel more of a bad ass when you won.
They fixed this in the sequel games.

its ok if its reasonable and not paired with bullshit like not getting a single ding on the car in the car bomb valet mission in san andreas, seriously frick that mission

Someone explain to me: Why do Mario games have timers when the courses are so short that it makes the timer completely pointless and irrelevant? I've been playing Mario 3D world and often forget there even is a timer.

If i remember correctly, your remaining time converted to points. At least in the original mario anyway. Back then morons cared about high scores

Why have an arbitrary time limit instead of something like Sonic's clock?

It's scary at first but you get stuff like the song to slow time down and the weird banker.
It makes you think about your own time management and mortality, which is good, and is full of atmosphere.
      Try it.

    >unexpected timer starts
    >feel nervous
    >suddenly become terrible at the game and run out of time
    >try again
    >immediately finish it with no problem

Shit has been happening to me since I was a kid. Must be my brain feeling overwhelmed and pressured at first, then being fine with the timer on the second time around since I know it's going to occur this time. I have literally never enjoyed timers in games.

I liked the timed missions in Xcom 2 but the big issue was that they should have been soft timers with respawning enemies instead of literal ones most of the time. Its very silly that a group of insurgents are basically genociding the alien garrisons every mission instead of completing an objective and getting the hell out before you're overwhelmed

Any game is better with a 5 minute timer to solve the ending fight/puzzle/situation
