Gen 5 was the beginning of the end, and I think people really don't want to admit that because of the good qualities Gen 5 did have. But the first games omitting any normal pokemon from play in favor of a whole new cast was already a red flag, the routes being displayed as straight lines on the map showed they were focusing less on exploration and made exploring routes that did have multiple paths confusing, the actual overall map was way smaller and other general mechanics were missing, plus there was no extra mini-game-esque content outside of something that required wi-fi and to set up stuff on a website which was niche for the time. The transition into 3D is what put the nail in the coffin, bringing a ton of onions into the game and beginning to degrade the overall series.
I’d say the downfall started as a response to the complains about BW’s entirely new cast. You can see this with B2W2 already. All of the marketing around it was that "look guys the old stuff is back!", a lot of the new features are fan service bringing back old stuff, etc
I don't disagree, that is a really good point and observation. Sigh. I really wanna play Pokemon but I have replayed Gens 1 - 4 to death and I am sick of fangames/ROM hacks that are just "its the same game, but now there is gen 6 mechanics" or "look at this coolio new fanmade game...but get this...it has ADULT THEMES and PEOPLE DIE. Edgy, right?"
Maybe I'm just jaded, but I think there'll never be anything that recaptures the original magic Pokemon had back in the original 2 generations, or when the games became more fleshed out in gens 3 and 4.

I have not; I'll look at it, thanks. Picrel is fangames I have installed. Insurgence drops off hard toward the end of the main story imo, but its Delta fakemons are really cool. I like a lot of them. Flux was amazing, shame its only a demo right now.

Yeah, for real. That knockoff mmo Temtem's not too bad. It's got a better battling system, but all of its "temtem" are very unmemorable which is what makes the game hard tbh.
Emerald Rogue has been slapping super hard, I like Inflamed Red too. I'm just super hype on Flux to develop further tbh.

The actual content is uninspired, but the gameplay is really good. I only play it every now and then because...half of the hype of Pokemon is collecting mons I like and building a team around that but...all of the Temtem look really dumb and I can't pull type matchups out of my ass because I generally have no fucking clue what I am looking at.

I wouldn't say they're peak, but they were the edge of a very steep cliff. Gen 7 were good games and everything after starting with Legpiss has been absolute garbage.
