>It's better than the first game at everything but story

>It's better than the first game at everything but story
Maybe it's because I wasn't that attached to the first game like so many others, but I find the sequel to the better game. The animations are better, the controls respond better, aiming is made better by the inclusion of motion/gyro options, overall more responsive, there's significantly more stuff to use your resources on, more upgrade paths, better sound design, etc. The encounters and level design are leaps and bounds better than the first. They both have their fair share of empty areas, but with the 2nd one it's seems like side areas are actually populated with zombies or survivors to kill, small puzzles to solve, or (albeit very limited) platforming while the first didn't feature anything like that. The enemy design is more varied even though a lot the differences are small changes in tactics like likeliness to use melee or ambushes, that is still more than the first game offers. Also the cat and mouse gameplay is helped massively by news ways to hide and get around the map. If the original Last of Us was a 6/10, I'd say that this is a solid 7/10.

But so much of the game is walky talky. If there was more combat I'd be down but I hate the characters and design so putting up with that for 3 hours maybe of fun is bullshit.

I didn't feel that way at all. I mean between the theater all the way up to the hospital is almost constant gameplay or enemy encounters, which surprised even me given the first game's tendency to have long sections of nothing.

the gameplay of the first wasn't particularly good past the first couple of hours
so having a fine tuned version of it with the worst story told in a videogame yet isn't a good deal for many
for comparison you could argue ubisoft has improved the gameplay of far cry titles but does it even matter?

      Agreed
      >so having a fine tuned version of it with the worst story told in a videogame yet isn't a good deal for many
I don't think either game's story is all that, but the worst in all gaming is a stretch, at least imo.
      >for comparison you could argue ubisoft has improved the gameplay of far cry titles but does it even matter
If you can make the case for it, I don't see why not or how it doesn't matter.

because every far cry title since 3 was increasingly duller and devoid of personality, better shooting or driving really don't make up for it

That’s how I look at it. I can also see past a bad story, but LoU2’s narrative is so stretched out and goes on for such a long time. The gameplay is very good at times, but it takes absolutely forever to get there. Its not even about patience, the story is just ridiculous in how slow paced it is. It’s a strange case where I would say the sequel is actually worse despite so much of the gameplay being an improvement.

Incredible? In what way? Fighting the zombies was the worst part of LoU1 and 2. The first half of day 2 had alright level design in fight the seraphites on the rooftops, but that it, and it’s not even the best the game had to offer.

    No it's not.
The first game had infinitely better pacing and setpieces, plus far longer stretches of time where you're actually playing the game.
By the time you're properly starting TLoU 2 in the Seattle area you'd already be past the point where Tess dies in the first game.

Terrible game, terrible deconstruction of what made it good, the characters. I knew something was fricking wrong when Joel started walking around with his shirt tucked in. Stupid ass game, stupid characters, esp pregnant lady running around and fighting. Stopped once the troony kid and lesbo were the new joel and daughter relationship. Stupid ass game with stupid ass woke politics. Frick this game. I am done with naughty dog and will never spend on a game from them again.

      >terrible deconstruction of what made it good, the characters.
What made the original good was specifically the internal struggles of the characters dealing with their traumas, which is also the driving narrative of the sequel.
      >Joel started walking around with his shirt tucked in
Are you moronic? This was important enough to add to your post?

It is a story driven game.

trash writing + awful character design + atrocious plot = shit game

It is as simple as that. It doesn't matter how good the combat or world design is, when the storytelling of a story driven game is pure and unadulterated shit.

All this slide shows is a bunch of meme metrics such as “3rd best selling PS4 game on a friday in June in dollar sales in the US”, its just damage control to keep investors from suspected shit

I felt the same way OP. Tried making this point on here before, but you always get shouted down. The story is utter dogshit and totally unsatisfying but the gameplay is genuinely very good, and I wish more action games with stealth elements would incorporate some of the things in TLOU2, even if they're just basic "crouching in grass is context dependent and doesn't make you completely hidden" things.

I hate both games, they represent a step backwards for the medium with how they don't trust the gameplay at all to carry any of the big moments, instead defaulting to cinematic narrative for everything except the scenes that are best summarized as "then they went to [destination]"

"Better" doesn't matter much when the first game was dogshit. It wasn't a good TPS, it wasn't a good survival game, it was DEFINITELY not a good stealth game. The only reason people liked it was the story, so if you make the story bad, what's the point?

The story itself is actually pretty solid, I think it's a pretty meaningful extension of Ellie as a character and I loved watching her arc unfold. Gameplay is a huge step up and it's probably the best looking PS4 game. That said, I did not need to play as Abby for almost half the game and played through all her parts on the easiest setting just to get through them.

I didn't feel invested enough in her as a character to justify playing through 20 hours just to advance the plot. The gameplay as Abby was kino but I just could not give a frick about her even after playing through her whole arc.

I'm playing through it after getting a free trial for psnow and downloading it. The story is pretty boring, characters are alright though. The game definitely drags with the walk n talk segments but shootouts are lots of fun.

There's a segment where Ellie is going through suburban Seattle that was a fricking blast. The stealth, gunplay and melee combat are all basic but mesh together very well. Picking off human enemies and dogs and then ambushing smaller groups is a ton of fun. Guns and weapons have a nice sound and impact, the gore is good and so are the panicky voice lines from NPCs.
