I often think how every FPS is grouped under the same umbrella at times and how Metroid Prime is unlike nearly any other shooter. Just like how indie devs make Warioland-likes and Zelda 2-likes I'm sure that if people were to make a fps like Prime it would be known as a Prime-like.

fusion, to this day my favourite game.

I will get to fusion eventually and it gets high praise. I guess I SHOULD do super next as others are saying.

Fusion is my personal favorite, but Super is all around solid and the precursor to that storywise so I would recommend it first if you have never played.

Play in order, Super Metroid, then Fusion, then Prime 2

In most regards I would say that Fusion is the superior game, but unfortunately the level design has been so aggressively streamlined that it really hurts it in comparison to Super. If the linearity doesn't bother you, you'll probably enjoy it more than the other Metroid games, though. IMO, Dread really nails the sweet spot between Super's complex layouts and Fusion's more purposeful level design.

Almost every Metroid game is good though. Other M and Federation Force are the only bad games. Cant say the same for Zelda or Mario. Zelda 2, SS, ST, PH are all bad at the very least but you could say TP as well as maybe a few others. Mario has so many bad games I cant even name them.

I think most would agree with this, although I personally would put Dread up there with Super Metroid. Sure the music and some aspects of the level design were a bit less interesting, but In think the fantastic controls and boss fights more than make up for that. Also I actually think Prime Hunters is pretty damned impressive for what it is; it just suffers from being a DS game. It's a real shame they made Federation Force for the 3DS instead of Hunters 2.

I played this first, as a kid in the 90's. I understood that the music was meant to emulate the background noise of creatures and things in a subterranean cave. I loved how it intensified as you got further in, and I loved the exploration. This game has been one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

Part of me wonders what made Ridley so popular in the first place. Most of his boss battles were not that great and his most prominent role is in Super Metroid where he steals the baby metroid at the beginning.

Got really lucky with quick and subsequent appearances, then Smash sort of confirmed him as the Metroid series big bad with the Melee intro and the Brawl boss fights, then the too big fiasco and Ultimate.

Plus hes a space dragon, that's just inherently cool.

Metroidvania is just a shitty genre to do sequels for. The casltevania games also have that problem. You always get kinda the same shit. If something is improved something else is downgraded. Gimmicks don't fit well into metroidvania games because they just need the core aspects to be strong but then what else can you do to make the sequel more interesting? And then they still use some shitty gimmick that just waters the experience down because it's difficult to come up with something else.

      Anonymous

Metroidvanias are literally the easiest genre to do sequels for because all you need to do is have a different set of items.

Part of me wonders what made Ridley so popular in the first place. Most of his boss battles were not that great and his most prominent role is in Super Metroid where he steals the baby metroid at the beginning.

inspired by, and named after the director of, Alien

Who knows, he's alright to me. But I guess he's the Bowser or Ganondorf equivalent. His issue being he's not nearly has charismatic or entertaining as either of them because he's never given a voice, yet we're supposed to believe he's so intelligent he built pic related.

          >But I guess he's the Bowser or Ganondorf equivalent
I'm surprised it settled at that place. Back in the 80's it was Mother Brain being pushed in those bad American cartoons. I'm Glad Ridley got his time in the spotlight but I'm glad Metroid is a series that doesn't lean too heavily on the same antagonists anymore. Dread seems to have closed the book on the Metroids, X, Mother Brain and Ridley for good.

He's a rad space dragon and he's on the cover of Super Metroid Kraid is there too but nobody notices him. Then Retro made him into a cyborg, which was even more rad.

I think it's because his fight in Super operates on such different rules than the others. He doesn't have a weak point to aim for while carefully dodging a memorized sequence of attacks: his whole body is a hitbox and he just keeps coming at you faster and faster until one of you dies.

he looks like shit in that one because of how bright purple he is and his inclusions felt forced as hell too (like robot ridley in Zero Mission)
seriously stop shoving him in every game. Thank God he wasn't in Dread.

Ridley being forced in at the end was dumb but it was definitely one of the best boss fights in the series

That Ridley fight needed to happen.

It was a message to the player, Samus is back and she's not having none of Ridley's bullshit.

The dark days of Other M are over.

How many times, when it's included has the Plasma beam NOT been the final upgrade in the games?

    Zero Mission: Plasma Beam
    Metroid 2: Plasma Beam
    Super: Plasma Beam
    Fusion: Ice Beam(?)
    Dread: Wave Beam
    Prime: Plasma Beam
    Prime 2: Annihilator Beam
    Prime 3: Nova Beam

I kind of agree. Super Metroid is lightning in a bottle. My next favorite after it is NEStroid solely because the design philosophy most closely resembles Super.

    >It's fricking insane to me that Metroid is viewed on the same level as other grandfather IPs just because they had one decent game decades ago. Then again I guess other IPs have been popular for even less.

Oh, look who's talking! A person with a superficial view of video games trying to argue about IPs.
What an absolute joke! How can you judge the worthiness of an IP without even understanding its value?
I bet you're one of those plebs that thinks Call of Duty is the pinnacle of FPS gaming.

Let me explain something to you since it seems like your tiny brain can't comprehend it:
Metroid has remained relevant for over two decades because it's a well-crafted and timeless game series that offers challenging gameplay, immersive world-building, and innovative mechanics.
In case you didn't know, Metroid was responsible for introducing new elements in adventure-platformer genre such as non-linear exploration, backtracking and sequence-breaking.
And if we are going by sales figures then let me tell you that Metroid Prime outsold many other "grandfather" IPs out there.

So before making a fool out of yourself on this board again, do some research and get your facts straight.
Otherwise go back to playing Fortnite or whatever casual garbage game suits your taste level below average.

I've never played a bad Metroid game, taking into account I never played Other M, Federation Force, Hunters, or Prime 2/3.

I remember loading up Fusion after a bunch of people told me it is mediocre and just thought it was excellent.

Almost all Metroid games are good. If anything Super Metroid is over-rated. It doesn't really do much better than Fusion or Zero Mission or Dread.
