Sarkeesian's influence only extends as far as modern western left wing idpol (a cancer on sustainable grassroots profit). Time and moving between culture spheres will phase it out.

Carmack's impact will always exist whenever and wherever videogames exist. In a thousand years, long after nature has taken care of the feminists, the things that he did will still be a part of the lineage of the work of the time, and people who study videogames will still know his name.

Pretty sure more right wingers know Sarkeesian because they consumed media about how dumb she is/were exposed to that media or people talking about that media because of their social circles

She wasn't really relevant at all before people started hating her and hasn't been relevant for anything since

Doom was far more influential that anything Sharkeesian ever did. The doom engine was also released open source by carmack which also helped contribute to the development of the shooter genre in general. No one remembers what that b***h anita did other than grift, she’s practically forgotten. Ask someone if they know what Doom is and they’ll remember. I dont think it had that big off an impact at all. The main flaws with the industry now are battlepasses and games as a service bullshit and that all started with horse armor dlc, if not earlier. The pozzed bullshit in modern games is part of a much bigger trend in global media that has all sorts of sociopolitical factors. The least of which is anita sucking dick for good reviews.

I have a friend who must have fried his brain consuming bread tuber bullshit about gamergate, because whenever I say that to him he says "well, acktually its a bit more complicated..." and then proceeds to describe gamergate as vidyas first big sex scandal. Its such a weirdly overdiscussed thing. People make it out to be more than it is.

politicans get their power from taxes and bribes, big urban centers have lots of taxes and ways to bribe, waggies moving out to the country deprieves the politicans of taxes and bribes. politicans and their friendly news media liars gaslight everyone into a false reality to recover this money and power.

the 'elite', is not a coherent group. its different factions, all with different spheres of influence and pools of wealth. the citygays who went all in on their favorite urban center got fricked in the ass by waggies retreating to the woods. now they want the waggies back in their wage caggies so all the city-centric businesses and services can get their moneyback.

The metaverse is SUPPOSED TO BE the word we use to describe the blending of real life and the digital world.
As you might have noticed, we’re not very deep into that. Everyone owns a smart phone, sure, but we’re not all walking around with AR glasses yet (because they all suck)

There needs to be some level of integrating technology into the nervous system for the digital and analog world to blend. People are fast realizing that "VR" doesnt amount to much more than strapping a monitor to your face. Real VR will involve plugging a cpu into your spinal column.

TL;DR, "metaverse" is a fancy name for just interconnecting VR content all in one big hub, and you can viably spend the majority of your life in it. Real stuff, virtual stuff, etc.

      >everything is connected to each other, all within VR
      >go to theater, opens movie app seamlessly, sit next to friends
      >go to grocery store, buy stuff there, all gets mailed to your IRL house
      >go to VR race track, opens a Meta racing game seamlessly
      >drop by your workplace, seamlessly opens your company's VR desktop/cubicle/whatever, whatever your IRL job has designated as "VR doable", like accounting or meetings
      >go to a local venue, pay real money for a virtual ticket for a "real" concert hosted by real musicians/singers/whatever
      >spend real money on a virtual version of a real car made by a real car manufacturer so you can get to things in your virtual town faster
      >get into virtual car accidents, buy repairs, pay tickets? (Probably not...?)
      >grope someone without consent and be locked away in VR for a length of time, maybe even have to pay a real fine?
      >go to shooting range, opens shooting range app owned by a Meta partner company
      >buy upgrades for your virtual house with real money
      >name-brand furniture costs more
      etc.

Horizon Worlds and Facebooks "Metaverse" aren't the same thing.

When you see these headlines about "FACEBOOK SPENT 40 TRILLION DOLLARS ON THE METAVERSE" they haven't spent all that money making Horizon.

Horizon Worlds is supposed to eventually be the backbone of the Metaverse, though it's got zero reasons to be called that so far, and it seems like such a dead project it probably never will.

Have you ever actually used VR? Most people would barely survive half an hour without puking their guts out.
Even if Metaverse actually got made it'd drop dead as a business the moment someone manages to succesfully sue for ruining their eyesight by spending 14 hours a day in VR.
A metaverse that you can only use occasionally in your own home in under two hour bursts twice a day at most is worth jack fricking shit.

          see

Problem is, most of what it wants to do is already done by VR Chat, Rec Room, and maybe FreelandVR if that ever comes out.
If they want to lean heavily on the "hub for many services, all stitched together seamlessly into a whole new reality" thing, that's certainly new, but unless they release another Quest, one that weighs less, is more comfortable, has a better battery life and is still cheap (haha no), nobody's going to want to spend 8+ hours a day in VR, let alone normalgays that put the headset on one time and get nauseous after five minutes.

          (me)
I meant "viable" as in it would make most of the other things you do redundant, so you can "live" in this "world".

Also, I personally have lower back issues that prevent me from playing VR for more than a couple hours. The biggest hurdle for Meta is to come up with a headset that weighs a lot less than the others, has a higher res and FoV to help against eye strain, and has a bigger battery so people aren't tied down by cables as often.
...while also being really affordable, somehow.

        >go to grocery store, buy stuff there, all gets mailed to your IRL house
This should be the obvious nail in the coffin for "real world" VR integration
You go to the VR Walmart, spend your time walking up and down the VR aisles picking up VR boxes and putting them in your VR cart
Then, when you're done, you have spent 45 minutes shopping and don't have groceries for another few days
You'd be better served by going to an actual Walmart (more time spent but groceries today) or using the website's 20 year old e-commerce interface (less time spent but groceries later)
You'd have to be way ahead of the curve to make a VR shopping experience worth anything
Like, VR Blockbuster presented by Steam, where you can play demos of the games with the publishers resting easy that you can't pirate the game through your headset
Of course, doing so makes it way too techy for grandma and thus makes it a terrible market proposition

It's basically a term for a gigantic conglomeration of different advertising companies. Which may or may not be accessible through Horizon.

Thinks like Fortnite, Smash, Marvel vs DC, crossover episodes are all also "metaverses" in their own way as they are a unification of otherwise separate fictional universes.

So this 60 billion dollars isn't just going to Horizon, it's also going to developing VR technology, shilling technology, and making deals with other companies.

You just have to scan yourself one time and you'll have your avatar for VR forever. I could see it being pretty neat for meetings and things like that. Imagine giving a company-wide presentation in something like VR Chat where everyone looks realistic, but you're all at home instead of having to physically go to the meeting at your job.

It's definitely going to become the future at some point in time when it's easily accessible, cheap and free of bugs/glitches/etc.

I know like 2 weirdos with their picture on outlook. Nobody is going to tune into VR when they only ever turn on their webcam if some homosexual manager makes them.
The company wide presentation will go as follows.
The person presenting will have a slide deck open sharing their screen. And a webcam on about 20% of the time. Everyone else will be muted scrolling tik tok or playing games.

                >Nobody is going to tune into VR when they only ever turn on their webcam if some homosexual manager makes them.
The beauty of this thing is that it's just an avatar. You can look like a complete slob in reality just sitting in your pyjamas with puke all over your face after having a hangover, but your avatar will look pristine. It's basically just like a vtuber avatar.

                >Everyone else will be muted scrolling tik tok or playing games.
Maybe for larger company-wide meetings, but that was just one example. You could also use this for things like D&D sessions, you could use it as a realtor showing off homes to clients in VR, you could use it as buddies watching a movie together in a VR cinema, online dating, etc. etc.

It just needs to be cheap, easy to install, easy to use, and then I could see it becoming very mainstream if some gigantic company like Google/Facebook/Apple/whatever utilized it. Eventually it will probably just be an app on your phone and then you put on a $100 super lightweight glasses like Google Glass that connects to your phone and you'll basically have full access to VR chat rooms on the fly ala something like Discord for VR.

google glass was a complete failure because they tech wasn't and will not be at a level to make it completely hidden for a good while. I think they were still using like 8nm chips then, we're at 4 right now, 3nm theoretically by end of year (though not ready for production in a mass scale yet). We'd need 2, or 1 to make glasses that can properly overlay and house info they'd need. Otherwise you get things that just look like fricking BCGs, like all those audio driver-laden "smart glasses", lmao.

Sure, but it will happen eventually though. It's not a question of it, it's a question of when. VR and AR is only just getting started. It will be fricking mental in 15-20 years from now.

No, it's not a question of when, the chips will get there, but the question is will glasses get to a point where they're wearable like that? Will people WANT to wear fricking annoying glasses? The answer is a resounding fricking no. The entire lasik and contacts industry exists because they're fricking annoying to put on your face.

I'd put more money in neuralink and neuralink divergent tech being the way forward (IF all that shit is to progress at all, of course), rather than HMD or external wearables. Just because I think more people would genuinely rather jam something in their fricking skull than wear shit. Also people have been saying VR and AR have "just been getting started" since the god damned 80s, the shit flops every time cause the tech will never be there to match up with the promises and idealized fantasy we've been fed for just as long.

Sure, but some people would still prefer to do normal D&D as themselves, rather than playing an actual D&D video game.

                >No one with half a brain is buy a house that they do not tour in person.
Of course not, but you could get the initial tour online and then save a recording of everything, so you can go over all the houses you have looked at over and over again. Then when you narrow it down to which ones you'd want, you obviously go look in person.

                >This would be an abyssmal downgrade to going to the movies in person.
No shit. It's an alternative for people who either can't or won't go in person. People who live too far apart, people who are sick, people who may have public anxiety, etc.

                >VR would add nothing to this
You're trying to tell me that people on something like Tinder wouldn't want to go on a virtual date if the VR was extremely realistic with super accurate body tracking and they could do it instantly by just pressing a button on the app, placing their phone on a table and then putting on a pair of lightweight glasses? Hell, this could even extend to people just want to talk, like distant family members/friends/whatever. It would be like FaceTime 2.0.

                >virtual house tour
Doesn't really add much that pictures or video wouldn't already do. A 3d enviroment of a real space to navigate would require specialized equipment and/or software to create. I don't think it would add much over simpler means to be worth it.
                >movies
I don't know, it seems to specific to be viable. Plus cinemas and video cameras have a bad histroy. But the idea of a fully 3D movie to be watched in VR where you can freely look about might be a niche for that. Or something like Hardcore Henry in VR would be cool.
                >VR dating
If it was technically advanced to the point you say then sure. Doing that in public would make you look like a loon though.
I see where you're going with these, but some stuff hinges upon technology that may not come to fruition or even if it does may just not be widely adopted. A lot of people do not like VR or get sick when using it. More realistic than holograms and flying cars for sure, but still firmly in the Fi part of SciFi even with recent deveoplements.

Every single person I showed it to back then said that it was too big, it was too confusing, it was too annoying, the stylus was stupid, etc. and that they would rather just keep their 3310/3100, or some people said that they were way more into Nokia 6600(which was INSANELY popular at the time) because it looked better and was more user-friendly.

It might have been a success from a technological standpoint, but it wasn't a phone that the masses adopted. It was too early for them.

Unfortunately for you, your cute little anecdote about your boomer parents being technologically illiterate doesnt change the fact that the P900 was a success and later iterations that addressed its flaws made it massively popular.

Nice cope but doesnt apply since there was a both an active demand for and an arms race to miniaturize computers, even back then. As opposed to VR or metaverse shit you're desperately trying to parallel.

                >the P900 was a success
I never denied that it was a success. It just wasn't nearly as successful as other phones around the same time. In 2003-2005 Sony Ericsson sold a total of 73.7 million phones, and that includes T68i, T610, T600, T310, T300, T230, Z800, W800, K700, P900, P800, etc.

Meanwhile a single phone like Nokia 6600 sold 150 million in just 2003. The following year a single phone like Motorola RAZR sold 130 million. That's what's considered massively successful and popular.

5.5% market share starting. 8.8% market share at the peak. This is among ALL the phones that Sony Ericsson had available. So the Sony Ericsson smartphones were probably like 1% market share at very very best, if we're being incredibly generous. They were not popular. They were not adopted by the masses. P900 released in 2003. It took until ~2010 for smartphones to become mainstream. Blackberry had 21 million subs in 2008, which would be 1.72% market share.

I even mentioned the Nokia 6600 several times in this thread as one of the best selling phones at the time and in direct comparison to the P900 because it was 100x easier for people to use since it wasn't a real smartphone like the ones we were talking about, see here

The metaverse could EASILY deliver. All they have to do is just make Second Life 2.0 with full AAA backing. The tech is there, server infrastructure is there, the blueprint is there. The problem is that these companies don't actually want that. They want a safespace hugbox where they can advertise 24/7 to everyone for money and nothing else.

      Anonymous

      >The tech is there
Maybe if it was entirely localized to individual urban centers or extremely developed, IT conscious countries like Japan or Singapore, but the connections available to most people in the world aren't anywhere near powerful enough to deliver realistic physics calculations or light rendering, much less anything near a VR simulation and anything less is just creating a less convenient Facebook.

You can have a good virtual social time over on so many other places with FUN in mind like Garry's mod or tower unite... Club penguin, habbo hotel, any MMO... Anyone that's familiar with games can sense the malicious intent behind the metaverse.

      Anonymous

      >Second Life 2.0
quite out of the scope intended for metaverse.
first of all, second life is a relic of an old way to intend the internet when smartphones didn't exist, when it was this far west you went to to fully disconnect from your every day life and pretend to be anything you wanted. nowadays this is something only weirdos would do; I mean even back then it was pretty weird doing it, but there was a much stronger divide between being on the internet and the rest of your day.
the web has been going in a very uniformed direction for at least the past 10 years, and it'll get worse sooner than better. so at some point unless you bother enough to set up fake accounts just to troll, any log in you do anywhere will be traceable to your actual IRL persona.
because of this, metaverse is intended to become the most sanitized and corporate virtual reality ever. don't think of it as the new second life because the similarities are very superficial, it's more of a bastard child of SL and playstation home.

tl;dr metaverse is intended to be a gargantuan shopping mall/office, with some minigames thrown in there. that's literally it

I mean they already have several massive malls that do exactly that, there's tons of rooftop bars. Like I'm sure it's simplistic to say "just make everything a retail store" since competition would be insane but yeah it's not really as much of a turn off as you think

        >go to grocery store, buy stuff there, all gets mailed to your IRL house

I imagined it's more just the Internet Historian/Jon Tron bit, the VR store is just amazon but with less convenience and an annoying video of some b***h talking at you. It's the issue with most these VR ideas, it's just "take something that's already works, and add the inconvenience of putting a Sensory Deprivation Helmet on"

Part of this shit is that "metaverse" homosexuals talk about how cool it will be to get item A in X game, and then proceed to use it in Y game and Z game.
Thing is, time spent in game X is viewed by the suits of game Y and Z as lost user hours, so why the frick would they make item A any good in their game? Instead they can make people who spent that time in their game earn item B and C that dabs on item A users. This only hurts metaverse gays, as they'll have to stick with a game if they want to stay equal with the other players, and metaverse games will only make basic attempts to integrate shit from other games into theirs.

Did anyone expect it to? VR was tried and failed about 4 separate times over the last 10 years. It wasn't going to, and will never pan out until we get something LIKE the quest 2, but lighter, cheaper ($400 is still enormous investment for most people), and more portable. At least for the "metaverse" that facebook seems to be banking on. For gaming, we just need GAMES. We need devs to actually release fricking video games. A token port, and one major release every 2 years is not sustainable anad is why the sales peak, and then crash right the frick down. People stop using their headsets right away cause they feel burned that the only shit worth playing is boneworks, H3, and beat saber, everything else is meant to be a one and done.

The move to standalone was a mistake. And they over promise. But I do think it is cool and we will eventually some cool uses now that psvr2 exists with passavle hardware and will drive money to more advanced vr games after the pcvr market basically died.

See my thought is, the lack of support sony offered to PSVR, they basically marketed at launch and the first round of stuff, but after ac7 and re7 came out, I don't remember ever hearing about PSVR again, in fact I frankly thought it was killed off, but no, they still make it and everything.
I wish there was a fair comparison to make but the vita was doomed from the start with the PSP being the most pirate-friendly platform to ever exist outside of the PC, cause it also suffered from lack of marketing.
I'm wary of the PSVR2. Hopeful, but wary. Certainly not buying one at launch. Maybe this christmas if they get a decent sale. Or maybe I'll just find one on craigslist a week after launch from some pussy who gets motion sick.

Thing is ps4 was really weak and trying to run vr on it was pushing it imo.
It could barely run 900p 30fps so VR was out of the question. PS5 is much more capable.

The concept of a metaverse as Zucc envisioned it was never going to happen. The idea of everything you consoom being part of a big interconnected online marketplace between rival companies is unbelievably moronic if you understand corporate mindsets at all.

Consider pic related along with the other dead Monolith games like AVP 2. We know their rights are split between three companies. People have approached those three companies trying to work out a compromise to publish them again and each one said "we aren't sharing, get the other two to sell their rights or frick off". They would unironically rather make no money than share it with their competitors.

      Anonymous

There's a difference between a metaverse and the metaverse. Obviously Zucc wanted Facebook to be THE metaverse, an "official" online mall like Second Life or VRChat where companies would open up shops for them to sell digital items for avatars to walk around with.

Everyone know meta was doa long ago. But Quest 2 is, by far, the hottest VR headset on the market. It's easily going to be for 2-3yrs. Yes, other headsets have better hardware, but Quest 2 has a ton of amazing 3rd party shit you can attach to it. And you can easily use Steam with it.

And as for VR in general. the main complaint people have is lack of quality content (which I absolutely agree with). The thing that's driving me insane is why haven't anyone, besides that Resident Evil game, figured out that there's a TON of old IP that you can easily convert into VR. Every major game company should be releasing dev kits to easily convert any game they have to VR to programmers.

People can’t even decide what they want out of VR. I’m cool with just a headset and ye olde controller like RE7, but everyone else wants either a direct brain interface (pipedream) or they keep moving the bar because just one more piece of equipment will cross that line from awkwardly flailing around in a room to deep dive VR.

Problem is it looks bad and is boring. The company seems rudderless with thousands of people doing nothing. Have clear goals in mind and for God's sake, make it fun to use. Have sex, violence, gambling and all other fun things that people actually want to do instead of boring meeting spaces and shopping.

      Anonymous

Problem is, most of what it wants to do is already done by VR Chat, Rec Room, and maybe FreelandVR if that ever comes out.
If they want to lean heavily on the "hub for many services, all stitched together seamlessly into a whole new reality" thing, that's certainly new, but unless they release another Quest, one that weighs less, is more comfortable, has a better battery life and is still cheap (haha no), nobody's going to want to spend 8+ hours a day in VR, let alone normalgays that put the headset on one time and get nauseous after five minutes.

BTW, a good number of those overlords aren't rich, but they enjoy(ed) disproportionate influence over the decisions of major companies. Games journalists would be a good example, as would modern comic book writers. They don't get a golden parachute.

It's an odd thing about the current dynamic, where corporations are trying to find some fantasy formula that allows them to lord over the economy forever with low value interchangeable employees who can be replaced at a moment's notice (like woke writers) and authoritarian laws that allow them to litigate would-be competitors out of existence.

Metaverse value proposition is simply nonexistent. There is little to nothing to be gained from moving corporate and production environments into such a virtual space. In fact in most cases, it’s a detriment, and that’s without even taking the unwieldy goggle-head into account.
It’s only appeal is novelty, which is why stuff like VRChat is successful - it’s for entertainment and games. But you can’t reposition a giant company like Facebook to glorified video games, so the Zuck tried to sell everyone this asinine idea of “a virtual space for everything”.

All these recent cancerous stuff like nft, the metaverse, ai, crypto stuff, none of it is ever actually gonna work.

NTA, all I really know is of several lawsuits, shit like gutting copyright, and artists shitting on it, but is there anything more concrete? I recall seeing some joblistings trying to get designers who are comfortable with AI.
Unless anon is talking about its success, I've seen some pretty good cherry picks that don't have the real massive issues that you usually see so I'm not sure if it's actually progressing.
Though who knows it could pull an Autodriving and all the "just give it a few years" are just blowing smoke.

AI on an industry level is mostly being used to optimize original shit to a very fine degree and sift through massive amounts of data. AI art, VA synth, and that kind of thing are legal minefields.

The fact that they advertised legs as a new feature of sorts, should be telling alone.

It's also baffling in a sense how this multi billion dollar company cannot make something even as visually appealing as VR chat

It's not baffling. Zucc hires thousands of random morons and just throws money at them hoping they can somehow produce his extremely convoluted concept of THE METAVERSE. When he hires actually competent people like Carmack they actively push against his moronic ideas.

        >just throws money at them
        he doesn't
the people working on this project had to pay zucc to work for him, they are working for free
