          >what did unreal tournament do
The unreal franchise was carrying the arena shooter through the 2000s and when 3 flopped it killed off the genre. What 3 did was cave in hard to the GoW audience and it ticked off a lot fans, also most people couldn't even run the fricking game for several years after release so it killed off the PC demographic which was 100 percent of it's fanbase.

Tldr: it died and took online boomer shooters with it.

people just didnt like it for whatever reason. i dont know what it had to do with gears of war, besides the art style. i thought it was really fun. cool vehicles. maybe a bit slower than ut2004. i just remember no one fricking playing it. i had it when it was relatively new and could not find lobby bigger than like 7 people on ps3. my guess is the other shooters were getting too much hype at the time for peeople to play it.

AKA Fortnite. That's what UT evolved into.

              Anonymous

UT resposnible for fortnite? that's really a stretch.. dayZ kickstarted the "survival last man standing" genre. If anything, UT belongs into the arena shooter category, but connecting fortnite to it.. na man.

If anything, I find it sad that UT meant that the Unreal games had no single player campaign anymore with a story. Unreal (the first game) had an interesting campaign for its time, with their engine showing a world that was pretty stunning for standards back then

                Anonymous

I wouldn't say UT is responsible for Fortnites existence, just that UT sort of evolved into it. Let me explain.
                >both games rely on finding weapons
                >both games are mostly focused on death match (with different rules ofc)
                >both games have had a redeemer weapon
                >UT had skins you could download, you could play as Bart Simpson for ex. Fortnite capitalized on people wanting to play as characters from other media.
                >both games eventually had vehicles added into the gameplay.

Sure UT isn't a battle Royale but it could easily be turned into one. Just mod one of the larger maps from 2004 and you could play Fortnite in UT.

                Anonymous

Ah I see, do you mean to say "arena shooters are easily turned (or in your words even: evolved) into battle royale modes if you replace respawn timers with match rounds"? (I know you also talked about the skins etc.)

                Anonymous

Yeah, that's actually a better way of saying it.

UT=Fortnite is a big stretch admittedly. It's just a damn shame that Fortnite exists because we will probably never get another UT.

Also I liked UT3, but the campaigns story was bad.

Modern Warfare deserves a worse accolade.
In the same way that we should remember Oblivion as the start of shovelware DLC, we should remember Call of Duty: Modern Warfare as the seed of lengthy and often complex equipment unlock trees. Although Battlefield 2 came out a year earlier with the basic idea in place, time spent turns into new equipment, it was Modern Warfare that really took the concept to heart.

          Anonymous

It was trivial to unlock everything except skins in MW1, MW2 it got so much worse tho. Battlefield 2 got there first with the gear progression grind but somehow that gets a pass from everyone. Over 200h to unlock all weapons, frick me.

            Anonymous

I don't like the idea of excluding the skins from the calculation of whether the system was ass or not. Having a lot of unlocks so you get them all the time at first and then gradually less as you play is part of skinner boxing, same way MMO level curves are always balanced so that the last 10% takes more time and effort than the first 90%. They don't directly affect gameplay I guess but they're designed to be there and make you feel like there's more you should be doing.
also I always give BF2 a pass because it never made me feel like I was missing out for not having a particular gun and because it was only guns. later battlefields and the call of duties locking stuff like grenades or particular sights behind trees is mega shitty.

NTA but low time to kill, in every single game genre in which pvp is even a fringe mechanic, is one of the shittiest parts of nu gaming.

It favours exactly one type of skill and that's reflexes.
Ultra short time to kill is what butchered MOBAs, class based shooters, team based FPS in general and even already shitty PVP like the stuff you find in MMORPGs
But it's popular because normies only need to focus on one, single skill.

If you have high time to kill, you need to focus on everything else: Strategy, positioning, focusing objectives and all the edge skills like timing, cooldowns, consistent accuracy, gauging your enemy and what the frick ever else.
The shittiest valorant player can still walk around a corner and one-shot the top player.
The shittiest chess player can't ever win against the best chess players.
Good games fall somewhere in between.

You get tools to get around it. COD4 had flashes and smokes.
In realism focused games, like Red Orchestra, you usually die in one shoot, but good artillery barrage, or good spawns in the following games, can turn the tides of match.

      This
As much as I loved sinking a lot of time into TF2, people need to face facts that this did IRREPERABLE damage to the gaming industry. Gacha games like Genshin that have a massive influence over the industry literally only exist now because of this update.
      We went from
      >Games have a store where you can buy additional content post launch
      to
      >Games now have store where you can pay money to have a chance at gambling for something you want, or you might get something you didnt want
This fricked up so many games and changed the direction the industry took where Publishers/Devs were now only concerned with how they can get Crates or "Loot chests" into the game to israelite people as hard as possible. Games were designed specifically around this core "loot crate concept", where the game itself was just a shell, a gameplay loop that influenced you to buy a Chest and gamble.

And then the ironic thing is, after years of this slowly falling out of favour and govts cracking down on the practice, Valve fricked up the industry again by creating primordial battle passes.

        >Blame TF2
nyehh... TF2 was a high profile case, but this shit had been the norm for a long ass time and TF2 simply jumped on the band wagon.
I'd blame free to play JRPGs before TF2.
even "Grand Fantasia" predates mann co crates.

        >Call of Duty 4
Normalised gaming for a generation of bros.
Dropped the bar for entry and became the first fotm game.
        >League of Legends
proved the case that free to play games could be immeasurably lucrative if you appealed to the shittiest gaming newcomers, instead of the old guard.
In turn caused a huge influx of the kinds of people that otherwise wouldn't have dipped their toes into gaming past Neopets
First major game to try and ban "toxicity"
        >Overwatch
The first game made specifically with intent to capitalise on the previous.
One of the most famous examples of loot boxes and gacha cosmetic monetisation.
Doubled down on anti-toxicity while being one of the first big games to push an ESG agenda.
        >Day Z and ARMA mods
Not an issue on their own, but ultimately each were the first notable example of doing a specific idea so shittily that 50,000 people would then make games to immitate it.
        Rust, Ark, The Forest, Velheim
        as well as
        PUBG, Fortnite, Apex legends, Warzone
All came about because of these two games.
        >Fortnite
Raised the next generation of gamers.
Utilised dopamine hijacking mechanisms, gacha systems, FOMO stores and all manner of other manipulative crap to keep children addicted.
Lead to a whole wave of new games to be objectively dysfunctional and demand dysfunctional things.
        Also indoctrinated with more ESG
        >Assasins Creed, Uncharted, God Of War, Tomb Raider, Horizon...
Sudden rise in popularity of walking/yellow paint climbing simulators with mediocre and shallow mechanics in between.
Killed the immersive sim and replaced it with the movie game.
        >WoW
Killed WoW and, in doing so, largely took down the entire MMORPG genre with it.

        Notably not on the list:
        >Minecraft
        >Dishonored
        >Bioshock
        >Surgeon Simulator

    >Dragon Collection
    (started gacha)
    >TES IV: Oblivion
    (started DLC)
    >CoD 4
(inspired multiplayer games as a service + pay-for "map packs" + turned the genre into ADS)
    >World of Warcraft
(killed MMORPG genre + its success made every other company copy the "cartoony" non-cel-shading style you see emulated everywhere today + started cash shop in sub-based MMO & other terrible practices for the genre)
    >Warcraft 3
    (started DOTA / ASShomosexualS genre)
    >DOTA 2
    (continued DOTA / ASShomosexualS genre)

I could go on for a while longer with games, but I want to jerk off so I'm stopping here, deal with it.

The genre didnt exist by the time WoW implemented a cash shop. It took them like 12 odd years after launch to do it.
By the time it started the MMO genre no longer existed and it was just wow and FF

GAMES, can not destroy the industry.
The industry makes games, and we buy them.
If the industry makes crappy games, then that's the industry's fault, not the game itself. If people buy the crappy games, then it's our fault that more crappy games are made because we proved that they could sell.
That principle is what happened with TES4: Oblivion. Everyone screamed about horse armor DLC, and yet they still fricking bought it!

    >Amnesia
All games that made the industry worse, but had redeeming features or other positive side effects so they are - at worst - a wash.

DayZ might have been a new height of slop but I don't think anybody there would have considered trying to sell it in the state it was in if Minecraft hadn't already shown that people were willing to pay a lot of money for the promise of "what if." In all honesty I don't even know if DayZ would have existed without Minecraft popularizing (*not* "inventing") the persistent search-fight/gather-build-defend loop when and how it did.

I'd argue minecraft was a mixed bag.
        >Helped kickstart early access trend
        >One of the most egregious examples of endless updates that add breadth of depth
        >Microsoft frickery
        but also
        >Helped put indie game development (which it originally was) in the public eye.
        >Jumping-off point for a lot of first time younger gamers and a much better place for them to start that Fortnite or Roblox
        >Big middle finger to the - at the time - increasingly dominant opinion that graphics are king

And of course, the mixed bag:
        >Reduced negative public stigma towards gaming.
Which meant more normies and facebook mums entering the space, but also meant more interest and participants, allowing more projects and more money.
but... well... we saw how that went.

      Slay the spire
      Risk of rain
      Binding of isaac
I'm pretty sure despite those three all being great games, are the ones responsible for popularising the concept

Roguelike and indie have gone together basically since indie gaming was a thing.
It's fundamentally easy to make a roguelike because you can make an otherwise simple and shallow gameplay loop last a lot longer and keep people playing. Plus you don't need to level design.

Deck building is a bit more nuanced.
Slay the Spire obviously inspired innumerable imitators, but deck builders were already becoming popular when it first appeared.
Even well before true deck builders, there were countless games like "chocobo tales" that followed the same basic premise of collecting cards.
I'd actually blame mobile shit like "Animation Throwdown" before slay the spire, even if the latter has had more impact in recent years.

90% of devs dont make meaningful changes with the difficulty anyway and just make enemies massive meatbags with 10000000 hp and hit like a truck to the point where the game doesnt become difficult because you need to use clever strats, but because you need to cheese it
