      >failed
      Callisto Protocol

That's not even the main character, the main ones are always children/young adults. The story is fricking moronic and poorly designed, it's some sort of crafting survival sim but you run from an ultra fast instant kills guy, the op. I think the story is he kidnaps kids for some reason, and he does it because he lost his family in a car accident?

But you don't even find that out till the only good game in the series, which honestly made me think the creator just wanted to do music videos and made a video game instead.

All of it is shit but the last one which is alright, but it's an obnoxious game outside of that.

funnily enough, this franchise was actually somewhat interesting once. in one of the early versions the house and "basement" was alot different, and the basement specifically had some really weird occult / militaristic / generally uncanny vibes with the dungeon stretching miles into the ground with all kinds of weird shit in it - at some point though they did a complete 180, scrapped it all and instead went with the soulless and generic e-celeb brownnosing route

im not saying the game was ever good mind you, but at one point there was atleast some kind of artistic vision behind the game but money took priority in the end

It was less about e-celeb chasing game wise, and more just the dev getting lazy. His marketing campaign was sucking off streamers/youtubers though, especially game theory guy whatever hes called. One of the saddest screenshots ive ever seen is the dev @ing him 5 times in a row trying to get him to make a new video.

What it came down to is him rushing the game and making it "wacky" without developing the AI of the antagonist to allow him to adapt properly. In early betas the neighbour had a clear amount of effort put into his pathing, his AI and had a ton of ways to interact with the environment to reach you. While in the final release, even in the areas that worked in the beta, he would just completely break down and get stuck and not even be a factor.

            Here you go.

This game went from no-sense puzzle solving and maze running, and then they saw how crazy FNAF blew up due to its scattered lore bits and said "what if we just dump random shit into our game to make people think theres any lore? the kids will fricking love it too!". And just like that, it failed miserably, and they didn't stop at all at double downing on it with a new game and a fricking cartoon of all things.
I remember watching someone who was playing the alpha of the game way back when, and them generally liking how stupid and nonsensical the setting was, then came a future build that turned the game into the mess it is now and the same person playing it was just sick of the game halfway in.

FNAF will probably be remembered for the shit that it inspired. Games don't get stories anymore, they have 'lore', so now instead of decent storytelling you get bullshit lore easter eggs that eventually some youtuber will tell you is really deep

They explain the story of the first game in chapter 4. Joey Drew created the cycle to torment a copy of Henry because he blamed him for the studio's failure, so he's stuck going though the same events as a form of torture. They really fricked themselves with that ending, all because they refused to let mattpat be right with Joey Drew being the ink demon.

Because if you want to get popular on the internet nowadays, your safest bet is to advertise towards children. Pewdiepie, Markiplier, etc. are all popular because they have/had about of 10 year olds watching the videos mindlessly. Kids are impressionable. You sell something to a kid, you have a customer for life. Joe Camel figured this out decades ago.

Are they making money? I figured they're pumping out all the shovelware they can in an attempt to create a universe, but I've literally never seen any interest in the series outside of early alphas for the first game. Most people see the second and think "oh they made a second one" before someone tells them

      Hello Neighbor currently has.
      14 games.*
      7 books.
      2 cartoon episodes.
      And countless toys and plushies.
      * Including alpha builds and games that are no longer available.

OLED displays use pulse width modulation to give the illusion of varying brightness levels.

I will always argue that Advent Rising was ruined by porting it to console and forcing the Xbox Live bullshit on it.

The best part is that the devs admitted that they had no lore planned and just threw in a bunch of random shit in there to give the "feeling" of there being lore. With Hello Neighbor there's a bunch of shit in it that doesn't make any sense no matter how hard you think about it.

It's great because we got dead rising, but also terrible because it mgiht've been good. Capcom has a lot of games like that, hidden gems or otherwise that should've gotten more but didn't because no marketing.

Even Maverick hunter x was like this, and that game sold well but they canned it because it didn't do COD numbers on a brand new system.

Shadow of Rome was a strange one because it had everything going for it except a semblance of marketing. Developed by Capcom's A team, tons of polish, easter eggs, secrets, great graphics, solid 60fps, next to no glitches I could ever find, it felt practically AAA in its presentation. They clearly had a lot of faith in it since it was a planned trilogy, but it seems like nobody has fricking heard of it. Yeah we got Dead Rising, but that also led to Dead Rising 4. aka ending the series with a pathetic whimper.

we got DR 1 and 2, with 3 being mediocre as frick but alright. With the 20th anniversary coming up maybe we can get a remake of the series so it can run well on a pc.

Advertising is mandatory if you don't have brand recognition and word of mouth. Capcom didn't really get that in that era, I guess.

Hand drawn animations are basically the same thing as pixel sprites, there's literally no reason to not go for it.
The game had way bigger issues with the writing and its RPG-fightan-metroidvania-platformer identity crisis. It probably would have been fine as a more traditional RPG.

Hello Neighbor was another one of these extremely generic "horror game for kids" popularized by insufferable e-celebs.

      Anonymous

Hello Neighbor predates that trend. It was originally trying to be Alien, with the Neighbor's adaptive AI. The whole advertising was less "le scary lore" and more "the enemy will actively adapt and learn from your attempts to invade his house."
It was when they realized that streambait games could be a get-rich-quick-scheme that they went downhill, by dropping the entire point of Hello Neighbor and relying entirely on MatPat advertising. When he got tired of their content because it was dogshit even by his standards, they collapsed.

What's the limit on what we're considering a failed franchise? Anyways
    >get one game that enjoys great commercial and critical success
    >follow it up with a spin-off and a sequel that don't get nearly as good of a reception despite being much better games
    >get an anime that also generally didn't do too well
    >drop off the face of the earth afterwards, only get dragged up for the occasional port, remaster or crossover
    >generally derided as being poorly aged even when you do get the remaster treatment
    >only really remembered by zoomers introduced to you through memes and coomers jacking off to the protag of your spin-off over 2 decades later

      Anonymous

Didn't NanaOn-Sha state that one of the reasons tat the series is on ice because they couldn't justify selling a game with 8 or so levels for full price anymore?
I never really got that given it could just be a budget title, especially since the games don't look that expensive to develop to begin with (the artstyle and animation are distinctive but it doesn't exactly scream high-budget).

        Anonymous

I wouldn't know honestly, maybe they didn't feel comfortable trying to make the games on a budget-game budget? Who knows, maybe they were actually kind of costly to make despite what they looked like. Or maybe it's just their excuse for wanting to just drop the series since it was getting less and less popular. Fat lot of good that did them if that's the case, but still.

Its a comfy RPG where you pick from different jobs and careers, and go on an adventure or go do your job around town. You level up each job while you do stuff like explore or quests. There is a main story to follow too about a kingdom and blahblah.

Agreed, but cliffy and crew sucked at taking care of it. Plus the dialogue was obnoxious, and the unlockable skins looked even worse than the regular ones. Great movement options and soundtrack, though.

Mario and Luigi had a lighting in a bottle first game and proceeded to fumble all the future titles.
    >each subsequent title is linear compared to Superstar Saga's open world
    >Bro moves in combat get replaced by inferior substitutes for each subsequent game
    >thanks to the new linearity the games are easy as hell since you can't wander off and encounter enemies stronger than you
    >for some reason took away the ability to switch between brothers in the overworld
    >the above decision reduced the amount of puzzles to half or even less and killed any notion of exploration
    >introduced characters like Stuffwell and Starly to speak on Mario and Luigi's behalf and as a result NEVER SHUT THE FRICK UP

Alpha Dream would never recapture what made Superstar Saga good so for all intents and purposes it never bothered me that they crashed and burned when they did and I only wish it was a lot sooner. Starlow was the final nail in the coffin though; the b***h never shuts the frick up because the devs felt somebody needed to put Mario and Luigi's cartoonishly over the top and clear to read gestures into fricking words that go on for 20 text boxes.

You're not wrong but I still enjoyed BIS. Still kinda depressing they stumbled onto such a great foundation in SS and then never made a game as well designed again.

I kinda want to steal Superstar Saga's combat, honestly. Bro moves were cool and fun but they could've still done more with them. Imagine shit like four person bro moves or something.

no but that's why it's not really a failed franchise. Nick and Game Mill are very happy with the results. They might even have sequel plans already.

I have fond memories of Dark Cloud both because of the original being a PS2 launch title and being fun, and for Dark Cloud 2 to both be featured in the first gaming magazine I got monthly (Game Informer I think), and for being a formative relationship between a guy and girl that I desperately wanted to see get together. Monica being a haughty sword Princess while Max being a dirty junkyard mechanic is also pushed all of my young buttons.

Also, Monica in the tiger lingere is still delicious to this day.

Epilogue has Monica go back in time permanently with no way back so you can't convince me she and Max didn't frick their brains out, get married and had at least several children.

    My two favorites
    >kingdoms of Amalur
the game is whatever everyone knows about that but the whole story always fascinated me. Ex baseball dude blows his money to make a game and not just that but an mmo too, they promote 4 literal who devs like they have some legendary status in the industry, when the most known one was Ken Rolston, the whole rhode island thing. It's great, and then there's
    >Too Human
This one stands out, the developers, Silicon Knights stole code from the unreal engine, got their offices raided and equipment yoinked, then the game was recalled for destruction. It was over before it ever really began

Maybe calling it a franchise is a stretch but:

    >do a sort of gritty reboot of a cheesy 90s ultraviolence comic
    >make it a weighty almost-sim with purposefully clunky gunplay, then strap some superpower on top with the unique gimmick that you need to take out the lights first before you can become effective in combat
    >have multiple in-game films you can watch in their entirety on TV, as well as a frick tonne of really cool bonus unlockables like entire runs of multiple comicbooks
    >have Mike Patton voice the Darkness itself, and a half dozen other legendary voice actors do the supporting cast
    >despite its flaws and general dreariness, becomes something of a cult game and it loved by a strong fanbase
    >is otherwise a failure
    >studio ultimately shuts down

    >YEARS later a new dev team take up the sequel
    >is the exact opposite in almost every way; linear shooting gallery levels, the tone is more akin to the ultraviolence comic andkind of cheesy and exploitative in a fun way, and the combat is SUPER fluid and kinetic to the degree of being like a Devil May Cry game as an FPS
    >feels a little underweight, but Jesus Christ that combat
    >goes to lengths to expand the universe, introduces other Top Cow comic lines into the story, ends on a cliffhanger
    >didn't sell too well
    >still not so much as a hint of a sequel or spinoff
