I think it's because the tonal shift for BK happened at the time it did. If it's about comparing BK to N&B and OoT to BotW, the gap with zelda is almost twice as long, and by that point, both the industry and audiences had changed enough that there were far fewer people who grew up on those games 20 or more years ago.

          >no gadgets
Zelda didn't become filled with wacky gatekeeping gadgets until Ocarina, which is the game that turned the franchise into normalgay shit. It's a good thing they went back to the original formula.

It was always criticized for that just like Donkey Kong 64. Tooie's main claim to fame throughout the 00s was the mystery behind Stop N Swap.

People hated DK64 because of the dozen+ collectables that only exist to pad out the play time, and the fact that they're not even hard to get but rather tedious. Which honestly is a problem that also plagues Banjo (jiggies, honeycomb bits, jinjos, notes, feathers, mumbo skulls, and whatever level-specific stuff there is)

Zelda had ran out of what it (well, the devs at least) could do with the 3D gameplay and Skyward Sword was a commercial failure relative to other games because of it + many other reasons that repelled most of the people who bought TP even if it also had the Wiimote and linear progression debuffs, Rare franchises don't have neither the context or the development across many games that even a minor Nintendo franchise like Pikmin would have so this comparison doesn't make sense.

BoTW and ToTK were made and advertised as reboots not sequels and N&B was sold as a sequel.

Why wasn't it a DKR game? Timber was supposed to be the protagonist of that originally before it became Diddy. So why not make it a game about that cast of characters? Do Nintendo own them because they debuted in a game with Diddy in the title?

        Anonymous

Well it wasn't a diddy kong racing game because nintendo owns diddy kong. Banjo and Conker also both debuted in DKR, and so did Tip Tup who later appeared in Banjo Kazooie, including all of its xbox rereleases. I image Rare probably still own all of those characters except maybe for Kritter since he's a kremling. The game probably would have done better if they did this. People liked grabbed by the ghoulies and viva pinata after all.

          Anonymous

I mean obviously it wouldn't be Diddy. Remove him and Krunch like they removed Banjo and Conker from the DS remake. But like, the rest of those characters. Rare owns them, right? If Nuts and Bolts took place on Timber Island, using DKR characters instead of Banjo characters, like Wizpig instead of Grunty, and Taj as a mechanic like Mumbo was, and the actual T.T. instead of a tiger. Could they have done that? Then all the parts could have referenced DKR stuff, like the balloons and the items and tracks. And there could be boss challenges that involve the actual boss characters like making a flying machine for the dragon and a water machine for the octopus and such. It'd actually make so much more sense in that context rather than whole Lord of Games thing deciding to change the genre for meta reasons.

so what, that doesnt make him a racing character. his original game was entirely scrapped and rebuilt from the ground up; banjo as a character already existed within rare and likely would have debuted before DKR if development went more smoothly. conker was the same way. the rest of the original characters in DKR are theorized to have eventually been given their own games as well if rare hadn't been bought by microsoft. they've said themselves that there was a planned idea for a Tip Tup game.

I still wouldn't know who jon was until a number of years later (shit internet with caps), but nuts and bolts was when I knew 3d platformers were on the way out. It isn't the games fault for that, but it's where a lot of the negative association comes from.

because most of these people never cared about video games in the first place, they were playing a character, and creating a brand and cult around their personality.

Once they ran out of their limited amount of gaming knowledge only ever having played surface level shit like super mario 64 and banjo kazooie, they realized they had to try new things and discovered a broader appeal through different trends that brought in more money.

It's a sad reality but with all youtubers and streamers, people who actually care about the games they play and showcase have limited appeal to the droves of dumb fricks with money who only want reaction content.

The pool of people who want to watch anyone play or talk about a game from 20-30 years ago is small and shrinking every day. I see people show up to streamers for the talking segments of their streams, and then when they start playing games, the chats die and go quiet.

Jontron clearly owns a bunch of old games and memorbilia, and collected more for his videos. He just clearly wasnt invested or an authority on them and got sick of having the same template for all his videos.

          >>dude why dont they play vidya anymore...
          >because they fricking got bored of it.
I also presume, if jon's relationship with games is anything like mine, he has a very small handful of games that he knows a lot about. for some of the games he played, he'd need to actually do a lot of research and play a bunch of shit over a very small amount of time. that's a pretty huge investment, especially for something that might not even make a successful video. not that it matters since that was his full time job. it's a lot easier to just find weird videos or movies, because you can watch them passively instead of having to play some shitty game.

it's probably just easier to do non-vidya related videos. that temu one he just did was basically just fully improvised and probably filmed in less than 2 hours.

            Anonymous

Theres also the fact that Jon hasnt had to care about money for probably half a decade at this point. When its not about the money and youve exhausted your personal knowledge and dont really want to do more games, then what reason is there to continue?

I don't get it, new fans are going to find thinks like daikatana really interesting to see how far he's come but I guess he doesn't want those to be available. he'd still be making ad revenue from them.

Not anymore it pays very well especially when you take 3rd party ads. The income got obliterated by the adpocalypse but its been fine for half a decade.
Theres some more open youtubers that discuss pay it seems like a pretty good deal as long as you can get over 50k views a video within a week. 1k views is $10-$15 for most youtubers, but the more popular youtubers get better deals.

Add in deals like Jontron gets where he is 100% being offered money in the tens of thousands per ad he does and its a massive income

youtube cracked down and gutted adsense for basically every channel that doesn't have at least a million subscribers so that they don't have to pay residuals to videos that only manage to get like 10k views over their lifetime. it's basically impossible for any new channels to ever reach this point because of this, so youtube can pretty much just manage the cash cow they currently have and not worry about any odds and ends.

SSethzeentach. Though he's sort of weird some of his videos are just "Haha I made a review but with board image board humor and jargon" while others times he spends the review turning the game inside out until there's nothing left to be done.

I always imagined it was because playing a ton of games and editing them into a snappy review format is significantly more time consuming and less-wide reaching than riffing on a weird old video and spending more time and energy on the props and skits.
Most modern Jon fans are probably just here to mine for reaction clips anyway.

It's less time consuming. He already made it. He's said everything there is to say. New games aren't innovating enough so there's no point. Being topical is what matters with games and he can't produce fast enough. He grew up and stopped playing games. He found reviewing games made it impossible to enjoy them. He found something else more fulfilling. He genuinely enjoys the videos he makes now more.

There are a myriad of reasons, but I will conclude by saying: you aren't supposed to be the same person you were ten years ago.

Sonic 06's problem is just another Adventure-style game at its core, but it's a buggy, unfinished dumpster fire and that's why people hate it. Of course it would have probably been good had it actually gotten finished.
If you want Sonic Games than have gotten an unfair rep in the past 2 decades of youtuber seethe, the adventure duology is much more appropriate.
The amount of people I've heard say the games are as unplayably buggy as 06 reposting the same GameGrumps clip or that the treasure stages in SA2 completely kill the game makes me want to punch zoomer teeth in.

At best it could have been "good gameplay, bad design," and that's if we gave Sonic Team unreasonable budget, resources and time. People love to try and run it back and pretend 06 could have been great, but a lot of its problems are pre-production level.

Of course, but let's be real here, as long as Sonic feels good to control in some way, the game would have it's fair share of unironic fans.
If it played like just another Adventure Game that focused entirely on Sonic and Sonic-clone, it'd be the worst one, but I know at least a few people who cried about Adventure 1 and 2's varied gameplay styles who would try to defend it.

I'm saying best case scenario, and what P-06 is becoming, is "Wow, what nice gameplay! Shame I can't do shit with it." ChaosX making all the partners fantastic exposes the problem: you don't get to use them to do anything fun.

Remember when Sonic Team thought that what people want to do in a Sonic game is come to a screeching halt to fight like ten or fifteen enemies by mashing punch or homing attack or whatever? Four fricking games in a row. Heroes, Shadow, 06, Unleashed.

Even if 06 had been "finished," it still would have been plagued with bullshit like that.

Heroes' only design mistakes were overuse of enemy gating and ABYSMAL conveyance/tutorialization/presentation. It's so bad at explaining itself that it makes players LESS engaged with the systems. The shitty ice physics and broken special stages suck too, but the game is fine bar "lmao kill 15 enemies" platforms once you understand what it's going for.

Shadow is also horrendous at explaining itself. There's like four bad missions in the whole game, it's fine, they even let you basically skip with cheat weapons if you don't like the shooting. Controls are just ass.

Silver is badly designed. Shadow's combat is ass. Both good ideas they fumbled.

Werehog is, again, a matter of a bad core combat system and FORCING you to stop. If they made fights optional it'd be fine.

Sonic Team's biggest obstacle in the 2000s was letting players play the fricking game how they wanted to.

I genuinely don't get this style of gameplay. everything is on rails, so everything is just a spectacle. there are rarely any secrets or alternative paths in the 3D games so every time you play a level, the experience is nearly always the same. the only reason to replay any level is to try to get a better score, which also doesn't do anything usually.

I still replay through sonic 2 or sonic 3 like almost once a week because everything you do takes genuine skill and reaction time.

It makes sense in theory. Dealing with enemies was part of 2D Sonic, but it can be boring in 3D, so the solution is to make enemies more complex so the player has to engage to fight them. They put powerups inside enemies to incentivize players to fight them. The problem is the games FORCE players to fight instead of letting them express themselves.

The original Sonic games were physics simulators at their core, the point of them was to git gud at building and maintaining momentum using the hills and jumps to try and get through the level as quickly as possible. 3D Sonic has NEVER followed through on this. right from the outset with Adventure, they've been "cinematic experiences" where you just hold Up whilst Sonic autoruns through the level so you can watch the Big Bad smash through the background scenery and create huge explosions and the characters exposit snarky quips at each other. The only exceptions being where you're kicked off the railroad into some featureless room/platform to kill a dozen enemies with clunky bad controls before unlocking a gate that allows you to get back on the railroad. Sonic Team even knows how bad these sections are, which is why the homing attack exists; to let you just spam one button to get through it as painlessly as possible.

that's kind of what happened though. they knew that the game wouldn't be able to run on the wii so they cut their team in half in order to start development on an entirely new game for the wii, so then you just have two halfassed projects instead of one mediocre one

Yeah, it ended up worse than it would have. But the narrative is that OH, IF ONLY THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN, 06 WOULD HAVE BEEN KINO.

Nevermind that Sonic Team was already hilariously mismanaged under Naka at that point, and that Heroes and Shadow had stronger core systems/design and still shipped jank. Or that a lot of the problems with 06 literally could not be fixed without starting over.

Whether or not there was an actual Threeie in development doesn't matter to the perspective of the audience at the time. Early on there was no indication the game was going to be so different from 1+2. EVERYBODY wanted and expected Threeie.
Even in the game they made jabs at people who were expecting Threeie, and there was big areas of the game that looked like it was developed for that purpose.

This whole "we need to capture a new audience" is so fricking cancerous and I'm tired of franchises dying for this idea.

I think the problem there is that if you look back at Rare's history as a developer, they and Gregg were never really one to sit on genre for too long.

They've always tried to be cutting edge and stay on top of trendy genres and they're happy to shelve characters who don't fit into that mold anymore like Battletoads and Sabreman. Per admitted by Gregg himself, Rare's style was looking at what everyone else was doing and trying to 1-up it in their own way. Battletoads was their attempt at making their own TMNT, Dinosaur Planet/Star Fox Adventures was originally a sequel to Diddy Kong Racing before it got morphed into a Zelda clone because the devs were impressed by Ocarina, and even Banjo-Kazooie was originally an action RPG named Dream before it got morphed into a 3D platformer because obviously they saw that games like Mario 64 and Conker 64 (which funny enough became BFD later on) were the future.

That's why it does make sense to why they would wound up making something like Sea of Thieves, because you know what's the rage these days? Big open world GAAS multiplayer games like Fortnite. Honestly, them making Kinect Sports games for awhile makes sense when you consider how a big deal Wii Sports and such were around 2010.

literally almost every game ever does this. why do you think there are barely any other 3D platformers coming out right now? it's because there aren't other 3D platformers coming out. that penny game that just got released is basically an anomalous novelty to be released in 2024, and it didn't do very well because the genre isn't popular right now.

that's not even really the issue with them saying that. the fact is that the character said they needed to do a genre that kids actually wanted to play, and they went with..... that? were racing games really popular at that time? I thought it was FPS games around that time, not weird car building games.

If anything, time has been kind to N&B. In an environment where Microsoft isn't inexplicably cagey about letting Rare have fun, it can be seen more for its gameplay than for the fact that it was promised to be a "banjo game"- a regular-ass banjo game- and not A FRICKING VEHICLE ASSEMBLER GAME.
Now the vehicle assembly and stuff is fine, it's inoffensive at its worst and it's occasionally clever. But slapping Banjo on it and saying "here, this is your Banjo game" was a horrible fricking move, and making the writing this hamhanded attempt at meta was just nauseating.

I wonder if the game would have been better received if they had used a few of the original characters from diddy kong racing, assuming there was no legal reason with nintendo why they couldn't. Obviously not diddy and probably not kritter, but the rest should have been fine

  53. 4 weeks ago

I kind of love Nuts & Bolts. I've played through it three times, even got all the cheevos, and I still load it up occasionally just to build something.

It's not good. It runs like shit, the physics are wonky, the level design is a really mixed bag at best, the character designs suck, the IP is confused. But the biggest issue is the idiosyncracy between the building and the missions, because either you're spending more time building vehicles for missions than you're spending in the actual mission or you've already built pretty much every vehicle you need to destroy every custom vehicle challenge in the game.

It can be a fun game, you can do fun stuff, but I wouldn't call it a good game. I'd call it okay. Also, every Banjo fan is well within their right to hate this game if they do.

    >Nuts and Bolts used to be loved
You should be stoned in public for this brazen lie, this base insult against God and Society.

People are defending him just because he's the ''le based man''. He was always out of his depth discussing games and obvious opinions about gameplay mean nothing. Nowadays I'd say there are better youtubers because they have an understanding of games and are also likeable.

What a load of shit. I was like, 15, and still knew it was shit when it released. There's a classic Ganker comic about it that also predates JonTron's video. I hate liars.
