I'm 50 hours in, and I just reached the last region. It should've been a 30 hour game with all the side-content.

yes there is, you unlock a new difficulty every time you beat the game on a given difficulty for the first

I'm not gonna replay the game, but I'll check out new content.

How does it overstay its welcome?
      >20 main missions for the base game as the bare minimum to see the credits of the base game
      >everything else is purely optional
It takes the average player 36 hours just to beat the main missions for a first time playthrough. Which is just right when you factor in how many dozens/hundreds of times players die on a first playthrough and the size/amount of all the main missions.

      >it only overstays it's welcome if you play all the difficulties as do any team ninja games
They can go as quickly or as slowly as you want them.
Once you beat the game and unlock the next difficulty cycle/NG+1, you basically only need to do like 5-6 main missions and 7-8 sub missions to unlock the next difficulty (NG+2) and so on and so forth.
Considering that you probably already got all the Kodama on your first playthrough, all you need to do is essentially speedrun through missions and, as per usual, grab whatever is the strongest weapon in your inventory you've got in the mission before accessing the boss. You don't have to begin to care about optimized builds or graces or set bonuses until NG+3 (or NG+4 if you're really good).
A main mission that may have taken you 1-2 hours on your first playthrough will only take like 10-15 minutes at most on your subsequent playthrough while casually strolling through it without dilly-dallying and just going from shrine to shrine.
This same process applies with other Team Ninja games.
Also, the difficulty cycles is like one of the best parts of these TN games, because they genuinely do change enemy placements and add new moves and patterns for enemies and bosses. Personally, I don't like rushing through a cycle just to unlock the next cycle. Though the games give you that option if you so desire.
Hell, Stranger of Paradise even has an "Extra" mode that essentially enables semi-god mode to help you speed through later cycles faster if all you want to see is just DLC exclusive content.

I did all the side-missions, and collected all kodamas out of habit. I should probably stop doing that. It's unfun, but I can't help but be autistic about it.

Same problem for me and I'm only at the second region with one side mission left. It IS fun(for me), but knowing I still have so much left makes it hard to pick up again so it's been like every several days but every time I do I get into it for hours.

            >so it's been like every several days but every time I do I get into it for hours.
Same for me in this case. I do 5-6 hour stretches. So I haven't launched the game that many times, but I make it count every time.

not particularly. It makes the ending of 2 land a bit better but otherwise 2 is pretty much a straight upgrade gameplay-wise.

It has lots of great bosses you can't find in 2. Yukimura is still my favorite boss in the series.
Plus, 1's gear system can go a whole lot nuttier than 2's gear system. 2 actually removed a lot of gear passives. You can stack an utterly insane amount of running passives so that your basic movement is faster than your sprinting speed in 1. Pic related.
