Ganker was literally created as a containment board for Pokemon threads.
Ganker doesn't need to exist, but Ganker spawned some very nice things.

Ganker isn't a containment board. You're still allowed to bring up Pokemon on Ganker. The only containment board on Ganker is /mlp/ because it fits all of the exact criteria of it (no pony images on any board is allowed)

Yeah, because the mods don't do their job to contain it. It was originally a containment board like /vg/ is one to cut down on threads that are ALWAYS present for months upon months and choke out possible discussion for other games. It wasn't uncommon to have two Pokémon generals going on at once before Ganker.
/vrpg/, Ganker, and Ganker are there because those topics would get flushed out of Ganker quickly due to how modern focused Ganker is.

rest of the boards didn't really matter and mostly generated their own communities instead of sectioning off Ganker users someplace else.
Depends if you envision more "X general" among your usual roster of daily shitposts being better than what we have here. Do remember that during the year or two before /vg/, we had at roughly 5 to 10 generals going on at any one time, sometimes more due to how quickly they go through their respective threads. Unless something was done to curb those generals, they were going to make a good chunk of Ganker.
/vm/, Ganker, Ganker and Ganker got created from Ganker in fairly recent memory so it's hard to say what kind of impact their creation had on Ganker for another few more years. As of now, it seems fairly minimal at best.
Ganker and Ganker are interesting since it's been a decade. You can argue that their discussions would've stayed and be more active on Ganker but I would also say that the creation of an entirely new board encouraged more of their kind of discussions to flourish rather than remove it from Ganker. In other words, I don't imagine you would see much more of retro or pokemon threads than what you already see today.

/vg/ and Ganker are pure containment boards and need to exist. if only because /sthg/, /utg/, and /tsg/ are generals that exist on /vg/.

The thing about Doom that zoomers don't understand is that it was never about the actual game itself, other than the years it and Doom 2 released, but rather the now millions of wads, total conversions and mods that came out of it. Doom is a rather meh game, even some of the earlies and more amateur wads were more fun to play than vanilla. It's only when you dive deep into all the wads and decades of mods that you can start to understand why Doom is a great game, actually it's more of a platform than anything.
