I think it'd be more popular if it was easier to draw. The armor has challenging angles.

I can guess why this one isn't that popular. It looks like it's a fighting type, both color-wise and with its vaguely boxing glove-shaped shoulderpads, but it's psychic. It's a very thematically confused pokemon, to the point that I'm almost convinced that they originally designed it as a fighting type and changed its typing at the last second.

It’s just a worse looking, brown scyther. Doesn’t help that there’s no game you can actually get kabutops for your playthrough in a timely manner, so not many people used it.

Doesn’t have the same cool ghost knight thing going on like the counterpart. Ceruledge has fire swords etc.

Feraligatr. How is Typhlosion more popular when it and Meganium are so bland?

Gen 2 babies who missed out on the initial wave of pokemania really wanted cyndaquil to be the next charizard.

It's a cool lighting horse.

It’s just not particularly cool or cute, and its competition for your unova electric mon is a cute spider.

It’s a basic b***h idea of a fire/grass mon. Everyone and their mother had already gone for the pepper idea for years on their fakemon, so the novelty was gone from day one.

I fricking love Dewgong

It’s cute but it’s a very one-note design and by the time you could ever capture one, everyone already had either the starter or lapras as their surfer.

Why dinomons are never popular in this dumb fandom?

Rock typing, and most of them being pretty shitty by the time you can get them. Most fossilmons aren’t standout cute or cool either.

>Most fossilmons aren’t standout cute or cool either.
I would like to make an even more "unpopular opinion thread" than this: the only good fossilmons are Gen 6's. The rest are either ugly or boring, except maybe Omanyte.

>> >Its competition is mostly shit because of Johto's pokemon distribution, the other two have great competition (if you're using only Gen 2 pokemon
I doubt that’s a major factor mainly because most people who play don’t limit themselves to Gen2 Pokémon in the first place, they just use the first things they encounter that happen to fit there team (hence the stereotypical team meme or Starter. Amphy, Red Gyarados, and 3 KANTOOOmons. Also your right that Johto lacking in Fire types (even when counting the gen1 options), but that’s a benefit most fire starters have since distribution of Fire types in general was fairly bad in all pre gen5 games. Hoeen is the best, Kanto’s is only slightly better but most are stone dependent or lategame. And if we all know the Sinnoh meme.
Your other points make a lot of sense though

I highly doubt that, because that doesn’t explain the people who starter with Gen2, it’s more that Fire is just cooler to the average person than water or grass.

Counterpoint: there are plenty of late game mons who are popular. Bisharp (pre gen 9), the Pseudos, legendaries (even the shitty ones that get 0 shilling).

Kabutops' main problem is that Scyther mogs it. Only slightly, but enough that more people gave a shit about the mantis over the shrimp. And then they went and gave Scyther an evo and tops' fate was sealed.

I don't want it to have an evolution, but it needs to have something. Either it's a complete redistribution of stats, a bunch of good moves added to its pool, or some sort of regional or new gimmick. Rapidash was already not very popular or great, but getting a regional made people appreciate it and want to use it a bit more. I think that's kind of what this thing needs because I always just see it as Electric Rapidash anyway

Rapidash was already not very popular or great, but getting a regional made people appreciate it and want to use it a bit more. I think that's kind of what this thing needs because I always just see it as Electric Rapidash anyway

It's already faster and has higher physical attack than rapidash, but Rapidash is bulkier and has 3 more base pts. I think we shift BST little bit, then play with the movepool. Plus one other maybe ridiculous change

>Drop SpDef and Def by 3 each, bringing them from 63 to 60 (now has 70/60/60 bulk)
>To make it match fire horse for BST, we put 3 more pts into Speed and then add 1 more from the defenses we took earlier, taking it from 116 to 120. Doesn't make a huge difference but now it outspeeds most paradoxes inc Moon so that's cool
>The remaining five points we took from the defenses go into attack, taking it from 100 to 105
>Give it access to Zing Zap for a more reliable physical electric attack.
>Not sure if the spiky mane is actually horns, but let's say it is. Now it gets Megahorn and Smart Strike, like Rapidash
>Other moves it should get: Double Shock, Trailblaze, High Horsepower and Electrify
>Not necessary but it could change to Electric/Normal

And now it has more options. I was surprised it didn't learn a lot of those moves already. But now you can run a Sap Sipper set that comes in on Spore and revenge kills with Flame Charge or whatever. You can still run Lightningrod for Doubles support, or to catch people off guard with a special attacking build. And then Motor Drive is still there for funsies. Now it can hit a bit harder, has better coverage and if it does pick up Normal it has far better matchups

Haxorus. I get he's disappointing in competitive, but so is Nidoking, or fricking Aggron. I feel like compgays latched onto him early and that drove people away, expecting another over spammed edgy dragon aka Garchomp 2. But then 147 attack wasn't all it was cracked up to be, and now nobody really gives a shit about him so much they basically reran the idea with Baxcalibur.

Anonymous

Haxorus just barely had the bulk needed to pull off a Dragon Dance and get to work Outrage spamming.
Which was okay, but Garchomp had that meme 102 speed so it did the same job better.
Then Fairies were introduced leaving Haxorus without a strong niche being a solo Dragon STAB monster.
Nidoking has always been decent in competitive. Never A tier, but an upper B-lister.

Generally, Haxorus has the problem of nothing from Unova really being that hugely popular.
Being one of the more favorite monsters from a fairly unpopular generation leaves you behind the curve still.

The big problem with rock pokemon is they usually fall off mid to late game because they have checks like water, grass, fighting, steel, ground that are common late game types
They lack a signature powerful 100 accuracy move (flamethrower/ice beam/thunderbolt)
Most rock types are slow
They

Anonymous

rock types are simply bad in-game due to having inaccurate and/or weak stabs with low PP to top it off.
defeatist magnifies this problem, as when your rock slide inevitably misses archeops will get slammed, defeatist will activate, and then it's going to do jack shit next turn and probably just die.

Kabutops would be more widely loved if he wasn't in literally three pokedexes in the entire franchise, not counting the national dex. In both of those games he's available very, VERY late, either just before the 7th badge in Kanto or in the Crown Tundra in Swsh. And the third game, you can't even get him, you have to transfer him from a Kanto game.

Anonymous

It's less of a Kabutops problem and more to do with fossil Pokémon in general. The ONLY time Game Freak got it right was in gen 6 where you could get an Amaura or Tyrunt before the second gym. Then they backtracked in gen 8 by having Arctozolt/Dracozolt/Dracovish/Arctovish only available mid-to-late game.

And don't forget how Black 2/White 2 made Carracosta and Archeops only available in the post-game as if fossil Pokémon only exist to be a gimmick. Would it really destroy the franchise if players could have a fossil Pokémon early on in a playthrough?

>The ONLY time Game Freak got it right was in gen 6 where you could get an Amaura or Tyrunt before the second gym. Then they backtracked in gen 8 by having Arctozolt/Dracozolt/Dracovish/Arctovish only available mid-to-late game.
Funny that you use these two examples as opposites given that these are the only two gens with semi-popular fossilmons (relative to the rest of their dexes).
I really don't think it's that deep, people just latched onto some for one reason or another, but not the rest.

Anonymous

I personally believe that fossil Pokémon should be obtainable before mid-game. Also their evolution level requirements should be lowered some (like Amaura and Tyrunt having to be at least level 33 to evolve and not 39). Also the levels you get them at are atrocious (level 15 on Akala Island for Sun & Moon's example before you battle Olivia with her Pokémon being level 27 and Lycanroc at 28).

Anonymous

>I really don't think it's that deep, people just latched onto some for one reason or another, but not the rest.
And that is because:
1. Tyrantrum is based on the tyrannosaurus Rex (a popular dinosaur) while Aurorus is beautiful (also doubling as an early-game Ice-type Pokémon people have been wanting)
2. Fisheous Rend and Bolt Beak are OP with Dracovish and Dracozolt having abilities (Strong Jaw and Hustle) to make those moves even stronger.
It's easy to guess why they're the most popular fossil Pokémon.

mamoswine was so god damn good for it

he's nice, it's a little disappointing he's overshadowed by his evolution now, but I still think he's nice, along with the rest of the Swinub line.

Do you guys really treat mons in the same evolution line like seperate entities? Mamo being strong is just another plus for piloswine

You're not wrong, but I think Swinub and Piloswine look cuter.

2005-2006 had a lot of failed shillmons, didn't it? Munchlax, Mime Jr, Bonsly, Weavile...

munchlax is supposed to be packaged seperately and was given it's own spotlight several times, mime jr, bonsly ect were just the new babymons

>Weavile

still gets a lot of in the anime. Idk about the rest.

what went wrong with both Munchlax and Zoroark?

Anonymous

both were way too difficult to obtain during their debut

munchlax got it worse because it technically WAS available but was locked behind the most frustrating system in any pokemon game, there's relief in the idea that zorua just straight up can't be obtained

I am confident that this thing is only not popular because they made the bizarre to decision to have it only be found in two routes of one version of a game. It's an uglycute fat cat; it should have been well-liked.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Glameow and Purugly only available in:
Pearl
OR/AS
SP
PLA

munchlax is supposed to be packaged seperately and was given it's own spotlight several times, mime jr, bonsly ect were just the new babymons

I remember Munchlax and Bonsly in Gale of Darkness, and Munchlax was also shilled a lot in Pokemon Dash. I remember weavile and mime jr being shilled early on, too.

I always found it odd that the Glameow line is so rare over the course of the series, like nobody at game freak wanted them in any more games. Meanwhile Stunky/Skuntank are in X/Y, SW/SH, and Scarlet.

>may, barry, and diamond had a munchlax
>munchlax has a unique event in rescue team and got a starter role in explorers
>assist trophy in brawl
>starter in rangers

you could tell they really tried to get this baby bear to be part of the NFE crew

Ok, I can see where you're coming from now. Although I think it's worth mentioning that you can't get Munchlax as a starter role in explorers of sky, just as a partner in that game. Do you think they gave up on him by then?

yes

yeah they were pushing Riolu more. And Snorlax still mogs the frick out of Munchlax in terms of popularity.

>And Snorlax still mogs the frick out of Munchlax in terms of popularity.
It's no wonder, considering how much of a pain in the ass Munchlax is to get, on top of having to compete with one of the original 151 in terms of popularity.

how "arceus but even more furry" didn't get as popular as other gen 7 furrymons like Zeraora or Incineroar is beyond me
is it really just because it's on four legs?

Anonymous

four legs doesn't mean a thing, Eeveelutions are some of the biggest furrymons
the real problem is availability - people don't like to acknowledge it but how available a pokemon is plays a major role in how popular it gets and you can only get a Type: Null after becoming champion

Anonymous

My personal issue with it is that type:null is an infinitely cooler and more interesting design than silvally

I mean - it and Bewear got a lot of fanart back in Sun $ Moon's heyday, but it feel like they never caught on with the fandom.
Not even furries want these guys which is REALLY surprising since Stufful's "cute but SUPER STRONK" lore could've made them another Riolu.
I thought this was the type of edgy Pokemon the internet adores.

It's literally too generic. If you didn't know Pokemon it could be placed any any cartoon fantasy game and no one would bat an eye. Hydreigon mogs it in both edgyness and memorable design

Its not unpopular by any means, but considering its design and how early you can get it i thought it would be alot more popular

It was popular for a bit during DP era as an edgelord favorite
