In the original Silent Hill 2 Maria looks and sounds very scared in certain scenes.

yeah maria is kind of schizo, or there are maybe 2 maria (in addition to mary)
one that is James' damsel, and another that's just a straight-up demon

did the devs even play the original game?
    >nooo we can't have an exposed midriff!!
the whole point of maria's character (and the nurses) was to show that james was a horny coomer, it wasn't meant to give the player a boner

Not every character needs to be made into your average homely, 5/10 roastie. Silent Hill is a game about symbolism and pathos, not another vehicle for your tiresome, sanitized-grit nihilism.
Mary, the dead wife, is meant to evoke a pure, gentle beauty and Maria, the loose bawd, is meant to evoke a sexually assertive, adventurous mirror of that beauty.
There was no way they were going to get the remake right even if they properly tried, but do they really have to deliberately frick it up like this?

Gonna go full schizo moment and say that I think this is corporate sabotage. Maybe the devs are being paid off to tank the Silent Hill IP because some outside buyer wants to pluck it from Konami. So the devs are deliberately changing shit that fans are going to say, “This is wrong because [spoiler reasons],” which will in turn spoil the story for normalgays and fewer people are going to want to play it.

I played it on release. The intent of her design is irrelevant to me since I choose based on my own preferences, not James's.

Maria is a spiced up version of Mary. The effect is achieved with the remake version.

I don't have a problem with Remake Maria's looks but holy frick do they talk a lot in the remake. James doesn't need to comment on that blood on the street when it's a lot more effective to just have him be silent.

Heck, just have him say his thoughts in text if you choose to examine something instead.

I assume he's just saying things that would be in the inspection description. The James and Angela first meeting is shorter, as it should be, and overall much better. James VA is saving the game from the bungled original

      >holy frick do they talk a lot in the remake. James doesn't need to comment on that blood on the street when it's a lot more effective to just have him be silent.
      Fricking really?
James' silence is very important to the game. There are times when he just trails off and you're not supposed to privy to his thoughts at all times. Did they really frick it up by turning him into Talkative Protagonist #12734?

        Anonymous

James babbles senselessly all the time.

        ?si=CPTZojtUn8L8D4os
The new version of this scene literally has less talking. Hopefully, to observational and in-game talking is just the in-game descriptions. James still picks up items and says nothing sometimes.

It's expected for him to talk when he's having an interaction with another human being.
When the player is alone with him he should be quiet for the most part.
It's borderline whether he should vocally comment on stuff that had text descriptions in the original but I don't think he should, having all that stuff voiced fricks with the atmosphere

            Anonymous

If you watch that video, it's the least human interaction I've ever seen and full of pointless restatements and padding.
It remains to be seen if this will be obnoxious, but James's dialogue has dramatically improved in both brevity and VA.

              Anonymous

Did you play the original? Those pointless comments at the end of the video are if you keep going back and initiating conversation with her. The main conversation is just fine and where it's awkward, it's because it's supposed to be.

                Anonymous

Yeah, I did. The main body of the coversation is shorter in the remake, as it should have been. It's shitty in the original. Seriously, I think you'd change your mind if both were typed out in front of you. I'm just glad they're not both stuttering constantly

                Anonymous

Put it down to nostalgia or whatever, but I don't have any problem with the length of the scene in the original. James encounters these people infrequently and the oasis of human interaction helps break up the creepy isolation in the rest of the game. It'd probably be too long if the cutscenes were happening frequently, however.

                Anonymous

You can like it more, but I've explained why it's worse. James says less in the remake cutscene, he articulates himself better, and the VA is much better overall. I mean, maybe he'll be chatting about every single thing, and that will make it worse, but the cutscene exchanges are already a vast improvement. They even kept most of the original dialogue and just cut bad dialogue out.

anon. we are not here to actually discuss the game. we are here to complain about nonsense.

                Anonymous

You've explained why you think the original is worse and I don't agree. I've only been able to find a video of parts of the new scene interspersed into a trailer, I don't know if you've been able to watch the whole thing.
James being more articulate here isn't a good thing. These characters are supposed to sound awkward and strained because their sanity (or what remains of it) is at breaking point. James sounding like a normal, well-adjusted dude for this scene is not an improvement.

They simply voiced the text which appears when you examined it in the original game. I don't see this has a big deal

That's not as bad as inserting random quips but it's still a bad choice for a game that's supposed to somber, atmospheric and contemplative
It shows they didn't really put a lot of thought into what Silent Hill 2 is supposed to be, and how to best capture it in the modern day
