I was about to ask if you meant Super Mario World or Yoshi games but you'd be right in either case.

Yoshi's Story is when they decided to make the series for preschoolers. Yoshi's Island had childish graphics, but the gameplay is very complex and challenging in places.

what irks me is that they kept using the Yoshi Story design afterwards, when they were supposed to be literal Babies in that game.
Old yoshi looked so much cooler

I would even say that Yoshi was actually funnier and more memorable with the older more "mature" look where he has calm demeanor expect when he reacts to things. With the redesign, he's just perpetually happy and shows very little emotion.

        >Yoshi's Island had childish graphics, but the gameplay is very complex and challenging in places.
Yoshi's Island has little to no challenge.
Also call me when you've done the 30 Melon Challenge on every stage.
        >b-but that doesn't offer anything interesting
Neither does getting 100 points on every level in Island.

          >Yoshi's Island has little to no challenge.

Bullshit. You got through The Very Loooooong Cave on your first try? Got 100% on all the levels and beat the secret levels?

          [...]
Yoshi Story had practically the same gameplay as Island but without having to worry about a crying baby Mario the whole time. that's an improvement in my book

it's kinda annoying you have to replay the game a few times to play every level though

They got rid of being able to quickly throw eggs which ricochet around. You basically stop, bring up the cursor, and hit simple targets.

            Anonymous

it had more exploration though, trying to find all the melons. there are plusses and downsides

Yoshi's Island is easy, I beat it when I was like 12 years old, it's easier than almost every other 2D Mario title.

And yet, harder than any other Yoshi game, which are mostly made for literal toddlers

its a real b***h to get all the melons

It’s really only challenging when you attempt to go for everything but that’s only due to exploring everything
Execution of actual play forming and getting from point a to point b is very easy, but they’re all like that
Will never get why people wank off the difficulty. It’s like they never played it since they were actual children.

I have a very distinct memory of being a 5 or 6 year old going to daycare, being good the whole day so I earned time on the N64 at the end of the day and being incredibly disappointed that they only game available was Yoshi's Story and it was so fricking unfun. I still haven't touched the series nearly 25 years later.

Yoshi's Story was good, it just wasn't AS good as the best
Thus, everyone pretends it's complete shit

I think a lot of people just look at the "least-good" in the franchise and pretend it's shit. When in actuality the entire series is good overall.

If we're being real though Yoshi Touch & Go was the worst Yoshi game

I never played it because I don't like waggling

            Anonymous

The waggling wasn't so bad you just did it every once and awhile, most of the gameplay itself was pretty much warioland 4 but with better graphics.

All I want to know is what sadist decided that Yoshi needs to make obnoxious grunts and noises for every little action instead of the simple spring noise for a jump and the squeaks for flutter. Anything with Yoshi in it now is an auditory hell

i imagine it sprung from them wanting to show off n64s higher capabilities.

More like companies with only one good game. Donkey Kong Country doesn't count because it was a random gaggle of Westerners who made it.
Yoshi's Island is truly timeless, the only title from Nintendo to be so. Even going back and playing the good Pokemon games is a chore, and every other Mario game pales in comparison to the charm and satisfying combat/movement as Mario rewards the player with great speed and powers for basically no effort, thus you don't feel satisfied when you're shooting fireballs moving very fast because you didn't struggle to get there other than maybe jumping to grab it. Whereas Yoshi's Island's movement and enemies are always inherently challenging.
Think about how often you fall to your death in Mario or get one shot by a goomba vs getting hit multiple times in Yoshi's Island and not dying, but the rare times when you fall off the map or get 1 shot/Mario is taken is always devastating compared to "oh dang" in other Mario games, because the game is built around the difficulty. In a regular Mario game, you would have been dead over and over again from every hit, yet its inconsequential because we can zoom past the whole level in mere seconds. In YI we must appreciate the level as a whole, and we'll spend a lot of time in each level lest we die which is a huge deal, which all of this adds to the satisfaction of the game when we overcome even the simplest of things.

Frick off, star fox was an interesting tech demo but it wasn't until SF64 that it actually became a playable game.
