What would be the golden age of the 360 then?

There was no golden age with the 360. Everything was bleak and trash with that generation in general.
          >Paid online access
          >Normalgays and dudebros gaming en masse
          >Crappy quality control with the 1st generation of Xbox360 consoles (red ring of death)
          >Awful quality control on Xbox360 controllers
The only reason the Xbox360 defined that generation was because it was one of the first to be released prior to the PS3 which had a moronic development architecture and expensive launch price, and the Wii was just a Gamecube with wiggle controls to appeal to the casual gays and Nintenbabies like myself.
Handheld gaming on the other hand was pretty nice. The DS and PSP were incredibly solid.

              >PS3 dropping PS2 backwards compatibility in short order because they had no decent PS3 games
they removed the emotion engine chip to reduce costs. IIRC you could still play ps2 on later ps3 models, it was just done in emulation

Does the hardware really make a difference? I've never understood why backwards compatibility isn't a console standard. It seems like a no brainer to motivate people to stay in your eco system and upgrade.
I get why a NES cartridge couldn't fit in a SNES, but I just assumed PS2/xbox and beyond that there was nothing particularly special going on under the hood.

                >Does the hardware really make a difference?
If you mean with the PS2 chip in the ps3 then yes. Older PS3 models could play ps2 games pretty much natively and AFAIK worked with every game. The emulation they used afterwards was shit, some games like silent hill 2 had a lot of glitches and what not, while others didnt even work at all, you can see a full emulation compatability list here:
                https://psdevwiki.com/ps3/PS2_Classics_Emulator_Compatibility_List

                >I've never understood why backwards compatibility isn't a console standard.
Probably a combination of both lack of interest and not wanting to either develop a emulator (complicated and time consuming) or dedicate hardware (manufacure price goes up)

                >I just assumed PS2/xbox and beyond that there was nothing particularly special going on under the hood.
                https://wiki.pcsx2.net/PCSX2_Documentation/Nightmare_on_Floating-Point_Street
You can probably imagine why PS3's backward compatibility with the PS2 wasnt the best

                >Probably a combination of both lack of interest and not wanting to either develop a emulator (complicated and time consuming) or dedicate hardware (manufacure price goes up)
Thanks for the effort post. Its one of those things I've always wondered about, but not enough to spend any time researching it.
I just know if I was the guy in charge of designing a console knowing its the current model in an ever evolving line, I would definitely dedicate some resources on the front end, to try and make a console with some forward capability/futurproofing in mind (or knowing that it can't be a nightmare to reverse engineer for the next generation console).
And you can't rule out things like selling remakes to people, but they already do that with games that are available cross platform/generations.

I spent a long time just imagining what the games in that era played like since I didn't have a good enough PC, Assassin's Creed intrigued me with the great reveal trailer that I would watch over and over. When I finally got a new PC I was absolutely shocked at how bad all of those games were, it's crazy to me that there's a generation of people who actually grew up during that dark age and somehow developed nostalgia for it.

I'll give credit to the Wii. It had some unique games you couldn't find anywhere else. You had to dig through shovelware to find them but there are dare I say it, hidden gems for the console. The motion controls did hinder most of them to be honest.

Don't forget the PS3 dropping PS2 backwards compatibility in short order because they had no decent PS3 games .

I hated RE5 so, so much i swore off the series and all it's spin offs.
I eventually came back to them years later and they arent that bad. My expectations were just "I hope it's like RE4!"
When they had you in the village at night fighting those el gigante reskins, but it was just a rail shooter segment and no actual roaming the shanty town at night I was crushed.
Then the late game had you taking cover to avoid minigun fire like its gears of war.

    - Modern Sonic games are good and much better than Generations or Adventure series
    - All GTAs are good
    - All mainline Resident Evil games are good
    - All previous The Elder Scrolls games are trash and anyone who defend Daggerfall, Morrowind or Oblivion just jerk off on numbers while Skyrim is vastly superior by abandoning most of the rpg jank

90% of these games consist of shooting stuff. Bioshock Infinite may be boring and tedious fps but I have some sort of feedback from weapons so it's fine. Bioshock 1's shooting looks like it was made by some B team at best.

GTAV is amazing, stop being some moronic contrarian. Even if you think the story has shitty elements to it, the core of the game, the map and the gameplay are all the best they've been in any 3d GTA and it's not even remotely close

            Anonymous

If the story isn't that good, and the only innovation I can think of is more events in the world to do and maybe cover shooting, while said story sucks and DRIVING is lamer then yeah I'd stand by IV being better than V. Map is too big and isn't filled enough with events or even npc passerby, it looks nice but it's function for an overworld is purely carried by looks.
Contrary to belief, having a smaller map where objectives are plenty, is a better use of space rather than having an epic boardwalk, carnival or aquatic life. Maybe some key gameplay changes in V are cool and innovative, like heists and specialty weapons. But those are relegated to just those events.

            Anonymous

The real tragedy with V is that GTA:O took off so fricking hard and unlocked an infinite money cheat for the company so they mostly abandoned single player content to make more online stuff.
What really grinds my gears is how much stuff in online feels like (and should have been) included in the single player game. (like valet and insurance for vehicles so you could maintain something besides the default vehicle of each of the characters. Also shit like the vehicle delivery and drug drop environmental missions. That should have been things you had access to as the various characters.
And I had fun with GTA:O (for a while), and it was missed opportunity to not have your online character available as someone you could recruit for a heist, as a cameo.
But the biggest problem with V is you just constantly see these huge missed opportunities as you drive around a really expansive and detailed map full of frick all with no reason to be there.

              Anonymous

There's so many clues throughout V that they intended for some massive story DLC. My guess was it was going to take place around 2003-04, before and around the intro heist and the around the time Stretch got sent to prison.

Nah, the hype for new star wars pretty much overrode any critical thinking. People hated jar jar and lil anakin, but there was a ton of copium and good will that the next one would be better. And while attack of the clones wasn't amazing and carries a ton of dead weight, at the time it had plenty of amazing effects and sound design, plus the ending as a promise that "Next time..." and the Sith, while not perfect, delivers on a lot of action and lightsabers and flipping. They were all really successful films, with huge marketing and advertising, and it was still part of the pop culture landscape.
You had plenty of fan's falling off with each film, but there was still plenty of goodwill.
It was really in the years after revenge of this sith that the opinion began to settle in that they weren't as good.
Also lucas just couldn't stop fricking with the original movies by updating the special editions, and claiming that the original theatrical cuts were lost (despite the entire reason the THX remaster existed was because the originals were falling apart and he wanted to preserve the movies for the future), but somehow he claimed the original negatives were used to create the special edition, and so didn't exist anymore, even though that isn't how any of it works.
Shit like that soured a lot of the older generation of fans, and the fanboy stockholm syndrome started to wear off.
I was always really conflicted and uncomfortable about the prequels, I was born the same year jedi came out, and I grew up with the OT, and it took me a long time to process how I felt about the prequels. Honestly the plinkett review helped me get a lot of closure. It was okay to like the old movies, and if I didn't like the prequels, that was okay, because they were flawed movies that failed to deliver on the same level as the original movies, and that it is okay to not be a fanboy.
