At what point will you consider it retro then because its already been 20 years since they’ve released

never, unless we have another big change in video games

I get that there haven’t been many big changes since 6th gen but the passage of time doesn’t go away because of that

There's no need to suck up to millennials, young man. They will never like you and that's a good thing

but millennials also say that, I'm going to punch them too

Even in 2017, it would be extremely zoomer to say "this old gem", especially how little technology has improved since then. Even if millennials felt like 1996 was a long time ago compared to 2006, the changes in technology were massive. Comparing 2012 to 2022 is objectively not as big as a leap.

Yeah this is pretty much the definitive explanation for the current state of old vs new vidya.

7th gen and upwards has had very few meaningful differences in game quality.

Will we ever have big changes in vidya again?

          Anonymous

Probably not. The leap from 6th to 7th was the final frontier of meaningful GUI improvement.

There is still full photorealism left. It may not be achievable with people, but it is with AI.

It does feel like vr was the only big next step to go in after 3d but it just isn’t advanced enough yet to become popular so its more of just a lesser used novelty right now, maybe it could change in the future but part of me feels like vr will never truly become the next step of gaming like how 3d was the next step after 2d

AI will change everything, assuming society doesn't collapse or we all die or something before it can be used for games.

Oh for sure, just not for awhile. The eventual leap will be to photorealistic graphics, then a bit later we'll see complete haptic feedback for VR games. After that, immersive VR where you feel like youre in the game, physically, is the next frontier. But thats 20-30 years away, assuming theres no major societal collapse or natural disaster. But I fully expect there to be. So maybe we'll hit photorealism if we're lucky.

            >immersive VR where you feel like youre in the game, physically
If you're thinking direct neutral interface, that's not 20-30 years, lol. That's a while after we're all dead. Full haptic suits though, that's achievable.

On a semi-serious note I'm on the verge of quitting vidya. I'm a real adult now (not a college student) and the only games I enjoy are Fromsoft and indies
