I've been playing this for like a half hour and the driving isn't really as bad as people say, I feel like I just need a lot of upgrades. The only thing that's dragging it down for me is the loading.
Anyway, what I want to know is if there's any pay off for driving around the map and seeing all these little events at landmarks. Do the dialogue choices effect anything? I went to the cafe and ordered something, I met up with that Makoto guy, listened to his apology and humored him or whatever. Does any of this stuff matter?
Also I don't know anything about cars, which chassis is best overall for racing? The MR?
>Square shoehorns JRPG mechanics into a game genre that doesn't need it because they have no experience in anything besides JRPGs
Typical
Also homosexualry
RPG mechanics make sense in a tuner racing game though
Lvl 1 FAG
Like the people who don’t like racing lagoon
Dude I only just started
>Need to get more experience and level up to be able to equip more parts for your car
Oh man, my CAR is not experienced enough to have an induction kit yet.
You can, y'know, go bitch about real life.
Based game.
CarPGs are based and rare and racing lagoon is the best one. It also has a great soundtrack. Overworld map is based.
This game is too unique to hate, there will never be another like it.
>there will never be another like it.
Vro
Without even looking this up I know it’s nothing like racing lagoon.
Racing Lagoon has an overworld map and JRPG presentation. It also has more than import tuners, I ran a VW Bug for most of the game. There is literally no other game like racing lagoon.
>Without even looking this up I know it’s nothing like racing lagoon.
Then how do you know
I've played both games. Just because they're not the same game doesn't mean they're striving for similar goals.
I did end up looking it up, but I know I didn’t have to because Racing Lagoon is absolutely its own thing. Nobody would have been brave enough to do a Racing game with the presentation of a 5th gen jarpig in 2006, especially on 360.
It’s truly a moment in time, I’m glad it was finally translated and pissed it never actually came to the US. There will literally never be anything like it again.
It isn’t a perfect game, but it’s a great game.
I mean I agree for the most part, but to claim there's nothing even remotely adjacent is a bit wild. Is it just the overworld and car selection? I mean can you define what makes it so unique that no one else is even in the room? I was one of the ones most hype for a Racing Lagoon translation back when no one knew or cared about it, but the driving ruined it for me, which isn't relevant to this, but just saying I'm a huge fan of it. But to say /nothing/ is even in the same conversation, I don't know about that. What's the conversation, then?
It’s the entire presentation. It has a weeb story, random encounters, overworld, sequenced original soundtrack, and all the charming quirks of jarpigs.
Just about every racing game outside of arcade racers have rpg mechanics, Racing Lagoon is its own beast entirely.
but but it's too hard! I keep losing to the early scrubs and I have been racing since Gran Turismo 1/ Ridge Racer 1!
The game becomes piss easy once you get past the first nights. Sadly.
That seems like a really weird difficulty curve.
First night is tough but gets easier once you collect good enough parts.
I wouldn’t say it get’s “piss easy” but it gets easier.
Then it ramps up the difficulty again on night 3 or maybe it’s night 4, whatever the night is when the corvette appears.
Isn't the Corvette on the Wangan? In night 4 you're still in North Yokohama iirc
It’s whatever the first night you can get the corvette is. The night after you do the first big tournament race.
This is part of that Tokyo Xtreme Racer series isn't? The first game had "import tuner" on the loading screens.
Correct, it's a 360 exclusive by Genki that expands on the TXR formula.
Square was doing racing games before Final Fantasy
Lurk moar
None of the people who made this game were in the dev team of Racing Lagoon.
Lurk moar, reddit spacer.
There is no such thing as reddit spacing. Look at a Ganker archive from let’s say, 2007. There are line breaks everywhere. Nobody is calling out “reddit spacing”. You don’t see that until maybe 2016. If you don’t believe me go check yourself, newhomosexual.
Calling out “reddit spacing” is an indicator the poster is a newfag tourist desperately trying to have Ganker credibility.
>Scrambling to find excuses by pretending times don't change
Lurk moar, reddit spacer.
I’m not even that poster, I’m calling you out for being a newfag larper.
Newhomosexual.
>Samefagging

Kiss a human female and get off /vr/ you fat ugly autist.
>Newfags calling newfags, newfags. While the oldfags wear ball gags and gay flags on their foreheads. Ganker got enough virgin foreskin to make a israeli man die of sin. neet kids with skin the shade of porcelain, double chin, shin splints, shitstain dipshits, poor third worlders, poo in the lou orbiters, dindus with a fake dicks hopped up on hormone blockers. Dick suckems and molly whoppers, call the proctologist this anon stuck a phone up his chocolate pocket. Banter stops and gets awkward often, til an autist calls the janny a nagger goblin.

Where there SaGa developers involved in this?
Kawazu was the producer
Ok so this tutorial I'm looking at actually answered my question about the chassis. I'm still wondering about the story events though.
This game made me want to give Zero 4 Champ a try, the PC Engine one was nice.
Why havent I ever heard of this game?
Because it never came out in the west and only somewhat recently got a full translation.
Now I went back to the place I met Makoto before advancing the plot and some chick shows up. Is it a missable event?
There are definitely missable events in the game, and some races you only have one chance to beat for whatever bonus they bring so save often.
Do the dialogue options change anything?
I haven’t played it in over a year, but I want to say yes. Web search would be your friend here.
>Web search would be your friend here.
Except it isn't. I tried asking ChatGPT too and it just makes things up as usual.
I think the answer is yes, that’s the best I can do.
A gamefaq would also confirm it.
I've learned GPT is actually pretty useless for my applications 9 times out of 10. Based futurism technology. I'm sure there was probably some AI peripheral for the Genesis or SNES that did better than this at this point
it can be okay for some entertainment, but the people programming the thing have a "no fun allowed" philosophy and made the AI itself thin skinned.
One thing language ai is great for is paraphrasing and helping you to find the right word or phrase. No other tool comes close.
Use a Japanese guide.

Hell, there's a pretty decent english one on gamefaq too.
There's a bunch of parts you can only get by beating certain cars on certain nights, or by activating certain events. Dialog choices don't change much, you're just going to have to exhaust them in most cases.
this would be a lot better with a free roam map and without all this loading
God damn it… it doesn’t have a US version.
it's been translated to eng anon
this game is something else... easily top 3 PS1 for me, and 1) idgaf about racers 2) been playing it on original hardware so no cheating. Its openness and overall quality is superb. I'm no expert in car handling, but after watching some vids I came to understand how to drive and it's much more satisfying for me than any GT or NFS. You go really FAST here
that said, if you play it blind you'll lose a lot of content and it'll be a hard af game. Even with a guide, you should read and understand exactly what you going to do the following night before you end the previous one or you sure will miss some content. Many events have a very short time window to do it.
Chassis ain't important. Engine is. Pick an engine and accomodate for it.
What triggers me about this game is it made me feel the kind of wonder I felt with games like Parasite Eve or Silent Hill back in the day. That means something for a PS1 game in 2022 man... Honorable mention also the absolute kino cutscene from night 2 to 3
Jampigs
Warpigs
Carpigs
I'm still playing and I've been grinding races on the first night. I got a Celine/Toyota Celica body. I love that the cars are all real but with made up nicknames and acronyms based on the actual cars because they didn't have the licenses.
