I've come to the conclusion that video games weren't all that much better back in the day, and you're pretty much just overhyping them because of nostalgia.

Yeah most old games are just dogshit by today standards
The industry crashed during 2007 and still hasn't recovered from it, because they're still pretending that everything is fine and that marketing will cover their asses.
Most new games are dogshit by old standards.
>most
that's understating it
pretty much almost every new game is dogshit
I cannot even remember the last time I had fun with a new game that wasn't made by nintendo or fromsoftware
>Most new games are dogshit by old standards.
Yes most stuff is always trash, when looking back you simply have the luxury of every trash shovelware being already filtered+nostalgia goggles
The problem is that a lot of the crap is being pushed as general trends of lazier and worse gamedev.
The minority of games that are actually good and worth playing has shrunk significantly.
Not true, you simply don't remember the trash like you don't remember every slice of life slop released every anime season
insincere samefagging.
I came to conclusion already 15 years ago that the turn-of-the-millennium was the absolute Golden Era of video games.
Also Silent Hill 1 is not only the very best SH game, but one of the greatest survival horror games of all time.
>silent hill
one of the most poorly aged piles of shit I can think of. The second game manages to be worse somehow.
Sounds fair and unbiased.
Why would you expect a game from 1999 to live up to modern standards? Are you genuinely fucking retarded? Silent Hill is praised because nothing else like it existed before it.
Smells extremely underage in here
this, so much this. take my upvote sir!
>le bumps
Back in the day we had the option to go out and socialize with people if we were bored of videogames. The social foundation of society has been utterly destroyed because of shit like social media, so no we have no frame of reference in terms of how good they are. Video games felt better back then because they were novel and weren't something we spent all day on. Nowadays they feel shit because it's all we can spend our time on, so our expectations have changed.
Silent Hill 1 is only fun when intoxicated and playing it with bros. Liquid courage. Stops being appealing with age because you can't tolerate alcohol the same way.
old games had a relatively higher quality bar, not that it means much. Modern games have found a ton of ways to survive, and even thrive while continuing to be shitty in a way that would not have worked even 10 years ago.
Whats so aged about SH1? It has a unique cursed feel to it, like you found it in the attic and if you play it you'll die in 7 days
I've come to the conclusion that you're a dumb zoomer goyslop loving homosexual and your opinion is worthless. You should also have a nice day
old GOOD new BAD is a meme but modern games should take notes from older games because there are a lot of things that they get wrong
what a garbage thread
God, who cares? Do you realize how obnoxious this sounds? Go try the same shit when talking to people about movies or music, and see how quick you are laughed out of the room.
honestly video games as a medium genuinely have the worst people in the world to discuss shit with
it's like going into a movie club and hearing 20 people shit on Casablanca because they know nothing but literal modern garbage comedy movies
>HE FARTED HEHEE
Casablanca was always low brow shit
okay but give a proper critique of the wizard of oz
Im playing through it for the first time. The atmosphere definitely mogs the gameplay, its better than most games in that respect. But for every classic there are like 9 other completely forgotten games
You are correct, but Ganker is so obsessed with nostalgia that you will be called a fag multiple times.
That being said, there are still some old games that hold up and Silent Hill is definitely one of them, don't you dare talk shit about that game you underaged fag.
New games aren't better than older ones. You're just too used to seeing the world through your futurism goggles. You have a chrome-tinted view of the future, where all things new and recent look better in virtue of being shiny and promising and exciting, because of a lot of marketing buzz and emotionally charged internet discussion flooding your brain with dopamine. The "good times" you're projecting into the future and the now aren't real. You're jaded about the happier times past being gone forever, and escaping into a future you're pretending won't just be diminishing returns. You need to remove your futurism goggles and realise new and future games can't make you happier than games of the past. Shake off the chronically online mindset, make peace with finitude, and reconnect with your inner child. A game doesn't have to be brand new and propped up by hypersocial internet activity for you to enjoy it.
>ur actually sad
No I'm not.
And what exactly makes you think you have enough information to hold a relevant opinion that's worth expressing?
I think you are a bit wrong. Video games are subject to the time they were made. In the late 90s silent hill made people piss, cum and shit themselves.
etc
You have to be a human being to detect soul.
>video games weren't all that much better back in the day,
This. Games were never that good
Depends on game.
Fanboys didn't want to hear their fav game is clunky or jank back then and they still dont want to see that.
>clunky or jank
Eventually you realise these discriptors aren't negatives. When you stop being a corporate cock gobbling consoomer you see streamlined, easily digested friction free material as non descript, generic slop for pigs.
Imperfections and oddity form identity.
Unresponsive controls can just fuck off. No matter whether it's old game or rdr2.
TES series is fucking shit. have a nice day. Gothic is superior jank
so pretty much 99 percent of games are unplayable since they aren't super meat boy but also super meatboy is shit because the controls are slippery
There are shitload of games that are great once you get over the jank.
Might and Magic, Morrowind, and so on
Old games were janky, sure but they also did things that (most) games nowadays can't or won't do
>gaming in the old days: every major publisher released more than a dozen varied games every year
>gaming today: every major publishers release one multiplayer focused game every two years and Sony makes movies and that's it
I don't see why they shouldn't, they want to make a profit after all
>I don't see why they should have to actually make games
>they should just make casinos
konami ceo is that you?
Technically, and I mean in terms of the technology in play, video games are better than they have ever been. But what is missing is the soul, and that's not just a meme. The creativity is missing -- big publishers won't take risks and have just been regurgitating the same shit for the last 20 years ago, and indies are just trying to mimic the stuff from 30 years ago.
1995-1997 was the Golden Age of video games in terms of being the perfect blend of fresh ideas and the tech to help those visions be realised.
Games are more technically polished and complex, but lack substance. Games don't innovate anymore, they just copy and iterate. Used to be that big studios put out a hit that is then copied by trashy third rate devs. Now all big studios just copy from one another, beating dead fotm horses, and chasing cash cows. I can't even remember the last time I played a game released by an AAA studio that I would consider original and creative, and not just components lifted wholesale from games in the same genre with a slightly different coat of paint.
Trends are one thing, but gaming as a whole has gotten so fucking stale.
>I can't even remember the last time I played a game released by an AAA studio that I would consider original and creative, and not just components lifted wholesale from games in the same genre with a slightly different coat of paint.
Come up with a new game right now.
Not my job, I'm not an AAA dev with a triple-digit million budget's worth of motivation, and a dedicated design and writing staff.
most of Ganker are nostalgic for OG fortnite
I think you are wrong anon. The thing is you are very vague, so I assume you compare nowadays MAINSTREAM gaming vs back in the day MAINSTREAM gaming.
Sure there are a few good indie games still getting made today. But mainstream gaming is down the toilet since the wii. The is no denying that. Nintendo hasn't invented anything since the snes and keeps redoing the same shit and it keeps getting worse and worse.
Back in the day we got games like ContraIII, Super Ghostn Ghouls, Actraiser, Axelay, Diablo2 and Broodwar. Now we get just trash...
there's definitely a lot of tasteless people who confuse nostalgia for quality. silent hill 1 is a good example
but then that's most people in general about anything and everything
doom 2 with great pwads is superior to modern shooters in many qualitative traits we can define objectively
>This is the last generation of people that will be able to actually look back at the majority of the greatest video games of all time from a first hand perspective
>People who were born after the Xbox 360 was released are allowed to legally post on this site and share opinions about the "good days"
Man
It's true, they weren't better, but a lot of them also haven't aged badly at all and are still just as good as games coming out today.
And these days we can play them on PC with zero hassle using any controller on stellar displays with any audio setup we want. Gaming is good.
games have become so expensive/financially risky to make that we just get a lot less experimentation and variety. You can't just have a game that finds a semi successful niche anymore. Most things are tainted by needing to be continuously profitable.
You have your psone right there and yet you're using the two, what the hell. I heard playing cds in the ps2 will damage the laser
Op's PS2 is off with no controllers plugged in though
>yet you're using the two
are we looking at the same pic? I see a PS1 turned on with a controller plugged in, and a powered off PS2.
New games are so dogshit it's unreal. The litmus test for this is Souls games. I think at this point most people can agree that Souls games are about the best the modern industry has to offer. And yet, if these games had come out on the PS2? Nobody would've even been talking about them. They are utterly average when compared to titles like Kings Field, never mind something actually good like MGS2. It is only through the frame of reference of the post PS3 world that these games have generated any level of acclaim, and it's purely because they're the only dev even really trying anymore.
movie shit has ruined the industry so much that mediocre titles are now considered the best and braindead retards who gotten used to these shitty movies cannot actually play anything good now since they forgotten video games used to have actually different control schemes than call of duty or grand theft gears
>I think at this point most people can agree that Souls games are about the best the modern industry has to offer
Idk I tried playing the first DMC and that shit played like garbage compared to the first Bayonetta
Only about 10% of early 3d games are actually worth playing.
People shit on the N64s library but I have way more roms of it on my PC than psx, and every time I download an old psx game I used to play as a kid I immediately delete it after remembering how terrible they are
more like 1 percent of modern 3D games are worth playing
What kind of psychopath plays Silent Hill on a sunny day?
The Type that does not actually want to ply games and actively goes out of their way to ruin their experience
even playing on a emulator would be a better experience
If that's the case how come no other MP shooter has been able to surpass Q3A in terms of quality gameplay?
Has Ganker finally accepted that the Ps1/N64 generation is completely overhyped? None of the supposed "legendary" games from that generation are worth playing in 2023 they are all ugly early 3D prototypes. Especially "muh ocarina of time!"
I keep replaying OoT, RE2, MGS1, HL2, SM64 and what not, all the time. They're still great fun.
Legit 3D psx games off the top of my head that are worth playing because they actually have good gameplay/are entertaining
Omega Boost
Medal of Honor/Underground
Tenchu Stealth Assassins 1/2
Tekken 1/2
Battle Arena Toshindin
Ricky Carmichael's motocross
Gran Turismo 1/2
Wipeout series
Tony Hawk series
okay but none of those are actually worth playing because you should be comsooming new slop
old games have no merrits at all because worse graphics and controls
and controls cannot have intention behind them
because uhh reasons
There was more hits per year back then, and series didn't take near decades for sequels. "Everything is le nostalgia" is Reddit grade pseudo intellectual shit.
This thread is funny. An actual retard has managed to make the braindead console peasants seethe.
7/10 thread.
System Shock 2
Soldier of Fortune 2
Generally any PC game made between 1995-2007.
