there are plenty of games that were good before diablo ii. i've played the shit out of starcraft when i was younger, and people have spent more time on other games before 1998.
i can't go to /vr/ 'cuz all they do is recommend dating sims and emulation
From my personal cheap laptop/netbook playlist (j3355): >Tomb raider 1, 2 , 3 etc with community patch >Quake 2 (yamagi) >Heroes of Might and Magic 8 (6,7,8 combined) >System Shock 1 and 2
You can run any game 5-7 years older than your laptop so you have plenty of choices.
The best computer games were all released in 98-01 anyway. Eg. Deus Ex, Thief I&II, Baldur Gate I&II, Fallout I&II Planetscape Torment, etc.
Try the Total War games up to Rome: Total War or even Medieval II
This is not a joke
Since you can run Terraria, your GPU probably meets the directx requirement
Pic related, me running Medieval II on a shitty laptop
FTL - 2D spaceship crew management
Gothic 1 - RPG, you are a scrub thrown into prison colony, get strong or die
Warzone 2100 - RTS nobody heard about that was ahead of it's time, free
Fallout 1&2 - turnbased RPG, set in post apocalyptic setting
>FTL
Good rec. Fricking love that game. Love it so much that I willingly downloaded Multiverse because I wanted more FTL to play.
I don't know if Into the Breach is any more demanding than FTL, but I would try that one too. It's a turn-based strategy but it's puzzle-oriented rather than combat-oriented. Abd it's the only puzzle game I genuenly enjoy, it's like if Chess was fun.
I'm hard-pressed to imagine a game praised more fanatically than this. It's tough for me to imagine what a singular turn-based strategy can do to warrant this kind of praise. I should bump it up in my backlog's order, it got me intrigued.
you can kiss your social life goodbye once you start playing this. that shit is like crack. also the graphics are just pure eye candy i doubt sprite based graphics get any better than this
This game combines strategy and tactics in a fun way. Also, to exploit AI and win bigger battles, you need to be very skilled at the game. Strategic aspect (world map) also has high skill cap, and you can have much better economy if you are better at the game. It is friendly to casuals too. People play this game even nowadays, but more modernized variant called HotA.

you can probably play Titan Quest. Maybe give Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 a try
I'm in similar situation and heat signature is what I can play and run. Also sometimes warcraft3 but it gets boring.
