I'm not buying or playing any more of these piece of shit time-wasters unless i'm incredibly convinced they actually do something to earn it. Recently I've played nine sols, tevi, blasphemous 2 and momodora and they've all either been boring shit or would have benefitted from just being linear games, maybe with a megaman-like level select.
IF YOUR GAME'S STRENGTH IS COMBAT DON'T FRICKING PUT IN A LONG BORING MEANINGLESS MAP I HAVE TO RUN AROUND AND AVOID POINTLESS ENEMIES IN. FRICK YOU. I HATE SOTN SO MUCH FOR INTRODUCING THIS BULLSHIT

        >Mindlessly grind away at the same thing for hours, giving yourself the sensation of creating a "build" that's just RNG giving you whatever it feels like
        >Every "build" does functionally the same thing because the game has to be designed to account for the infinite grind and any possible build
Roguelikes are braindead goyslop troughs just like gachas and live service games
The only difference is that they're often made by indie developers so they seem more like "real games"
But the sad truth is that most indie devs are devoid of creativity and fall back on the same sloppa design principles as gachas and AAAs

At first I figured it's because moron lost its punch due to overuse, but then I realised moron became a forbidden word on other websites and IRL, so midwit started seeing use.

Essentially, anyone using "midwit" is outting themselves as a tourist. It's a similar story to people who say "normies" instead of normalgay.

Nine Sols was linear, at no point should you have struggled to know where to go next. npcs straight up tell you “go here.” You never beat it, you got filtered because your zoomer ADHD-ridden brain couldn’t handle it.

      Anonymous

I beat it and that's my point exactly. The game is linear. The meat of the game is the fights and the platforming challenges (although those were too easy and had nothing interesting in them).
So why does it have a non-linear map? Just put the fricking interesting parts of the game in a line, section them into things called "stages" and don't give me a map. Every time I have to take x minutes to backtrack to some shitty place to get a jade or check my map it's a waste of my time for no reason.

        Anonymous

        >why does it have a non-linear map?
to attract morons who want pointless "exploration" in their game. very less people would like to play a 5 hour linear game whereas plenty of idiots would get in line to play the same game stretched to 15 hours by making it non-linear. the illusion of freedom of choice is a powerful impetus to make morons to buy games.

          Anonymous

          >stretched to 15 hours by making it non-linear
That doesn't even apply to most metroidvanias. They're usually build for 5-8 hour casual playthroughs and incentivize replays through sequence breaking.
You seem to have completely missed the point of the genre just like the few developers that do make huge metroivanias. These games are meant for replayability.

              Anonymous

Because you don't get to go from A to B, you'd have to go from A to C to D to B but by sequence breaking straight to B and then to A you cut out all that shit. And then the next playthrough you can take yet another route.
You really did miss the point.

That's simply bad design, caused by inexperience.
The second cause is that usually metroidvanias sell more than stage based games.
Add to that, if you are made to roam around like a moron your playtime increases. This is just a few steps below a roguelite approach.
So, you can recognize a good metroidvania by asking if its design adds more fun for the player, or more money into the dev's pocket

I hate iga for destroying castlevania by diluting it into casual slop. metroidvanias are basically just 2D open world games and are just as shallow and pointless as their 3D counterparts. such games just waste time for no reason and aren't challenging at all.

Metroidvanias have structure and progression. Open world sloppa is just completely homogeneous cahntent, spread thinly over a heightmap because the managers can't wrangle all of their morons and keep them on task.

      >incentivize replays through sequence breaking.
yea? how does it matter if you go from A to B or from B to A when you have to do both things in a run?

If you break a sequence in a metroidvania, then your character has different capabilities when attempting different parts of the run. You don't play those segments in the same way.

        Anonymous

        >your character has different capabilities when attempting different parts of the run
sounds great in concept but consider a game like say SoTN, where you get upgrades like wolf mode, bat mode, mist mode, etc. the game is specifically designed for you to get them in a particular order and even you get them out of sequence, they wouldn't be particularly useful besides the segments they are especially designed for. I could be wrong because it has been years since I've played it but this is what I felt back then.

Astalon: Tears of the Earth. It's got 487 rooms. Three playable characters right at the start, five total later on that all play differently. And then two others in bonus modes. Excellent level design and false walls and secret rooms fricking everywhere. You can get pretty much anywhere within the tower within three minutes. The only downsides are that many people will be upset at how it's almost impossible to heal and that the ability to swap characters on the fly isn't possible until obtaining an item later on, despite it doing nothing to break to break the game if it was available at the start. Finding orbs is way easier once you know where to find the rooms that you can add multipliers to orbs gained. If it looked as fancy as some other metroidvanias they wouldn't have been able to cram all that content in. Creators are currently working on Castle in the Darkness 2, which from brief clips seen so far seems to be taking notes from the success of their previous title, which is encouraging.

          >HK below the garbage in A tier
          ok

Some of the boss fights are poorly conceived (not even close to most of them, but some), the charm system is far too restrictive in place of some of the things it offers being generalized upgrades that would feel better (much like Rusted Moss), and the in game economy being balanced around dying and losing currency means that not dying breaks it wide open, leading to a poor dark souls wannabe system.

i heard tevi has an unlockable mode where you can sequence break, would that move it up? I'm thinking of just doing that for my first playthrough since the story seems to be terrible by all accounts

You could do this but it leads to nonsensical placement of items, you would have no fricking clue where they are because they are in the same places the story would normally lead you to. I can't recommend it for a first playthrough, I would recommend just suffering through the dogshit story. You would be aimlessly wandering.

No. Even with Free Roam, traversal abilities are still locked via the game's story. You only get something when you're doing an objective, and it sucks. It's a band-aid situation.

Souls games do not include any sort of upgrades to character mobility. You can consider their maps pretty metroidvania-adjacent, sure, but at their core they are not metroidvanias because your capabilities do not change throughout the game.

Consistently varied and engaging puzzle design, loads of the things everywhere. Every area feels totally distinct and there's always something to find. Music's phenomenal and varied despite being one guy. Everything you find feels meaningful. Story's nothing special, but the individual character writing ranged from fine to actually funny, none of that shitty indie game dialogue quirkiness. It's just great in all regards. You're consistently building to cooler shit the entire time.

I don't mind the genre. I mind people doing it wrong.
I played animal well too recently, and that's a good example of the idea being done correctly. The upgrades that open up the map creative, have multiple uses, and aren't just the stock double jump air dash shit. There are lots of secrets integrated with the environment. The environment design itself encourages exploration and tries to build atmosphere. There's a REASON that game takes place in a large open world.
I won't say it's a great game but at least there's a purpose to the way they built the game.

Nine sols is just a bunch of boss arenas and challenges spaced out with a whole lot of nothing in between. They're good boss arenas and challenges but they may as well have just put a timer in between.

  18. 2 weeks ago

I like Metroidvanias, I hate soulslike Metroidvanias. Exploration should be encouraged in that genre, not punished. Games with gigantic maps with death systems that waste your time and make you lose progression is killing the genre for the original fans, it's making it more niche.
Blasphemous 1 was tolerable but the last one I really enjoyed was Axiom Verge. It's been almost 10 years. The genre pretty much died when Hollow Knight was deemed the best one ever.

      Anonymous

I know it's cool to hate Hollow Knight because of how popular it is now but it deserves its praise.
I agree that the death systems are largely pointless and shouldn't exist but if they ever actually made the game harder to you then that's a skill issue.

        >I agree that the death systems are largely pointless and shouldn't exist but if they ever actually made the game harder to you then that's a skill issue.
Rolled my eyes when I saw the game had this blatant Dark Souls element ripoff. Adds zero to the experience except making the already tedious exploration even more tedious. In general Hollow Knight is a miss. It's mechanics are over-designed (too polished and minimalistic, whereas Metroidvanias ought to give you many options for the sake of fun) and the art and music is under-designed. It's the opposite of what the genre should be.

All of them are good, even Minoria. Reverie is widely considered the best but they're all worth playing. If you want to go back to previous ones, Momodora 1 is like a Cave Story inspired freeware game, 2 is a small freeware metroidvania, and 3 is a linear platformer.

    Cont.

    Is Ender Lillies good?

It's decent but it's so derivative of Dark Souls (huge problem in the metroidvania genre) which made it quiet uninteresting to play. At least Blasphemous has its own genuine take on the soulslike stuff. Gameplay itself is pretty solid though I think it's pretty overrated on here. Looking forward to the sequel though.

What about dead cells? I have it somewhere and haven't ever tried to play it. I heard it was good, I think it might ha e even been free when I downloaded. Not pirate it was steam or epic store haven't seen it mentioned. Am I moronic I thought that was the metroidvania genre or whatever

I've tried to get into this game three times and I bounce of every time. I just don't find it fun to play.

I already bought minoria for 1 buck usd thinking it was the newest one should I get the Momodora Collection featuring Momodora: Moonlit Farewell and Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight? Out of those three which is best or are they all worth playing?

I would say they're all worth playing but to different degrees. III is the best one because it has the tightest design and focus.
IV is good but this is where the soulslike brainrot starts kicking in.
Minoria is 'Generic Derivative Dark Souls' to the extreme, but it's not terrible, just pretty forgettable. Also feels like the dev just gave up 1/3 in because the game just unceremoniously ends.
V is emblematic of the problems in the metroidvania genre at the moment. Very uninspired with cookie cutter areas and upgrades. Again, not unplayable, just pretty boring if you're a fan of the genre.
Momodora I and II are free. I is just a short cave story clone with an obnoxious difficulty spike. Only play it if you're curious.
II is another short and excellent metroidvania like III.

I hated how sluggish IV felt after III (mainly the attacks), but the game was alright. Recently played V, and it was somehow even more sluggish what the frick. Only saving grace was the devil trigger that unlocks too late, otherwise pretty bland, yeah. And it looked nice, I suppose.

Is it strange to love the Metroid series but dislike pretty much the rest of the search action/Metroidvania genre?
I'm not exactly sure what sets Metroid apart, but part of it is definitely the movement. I love going fast as frick in those games, backtracking never feels tedious. The only other one I sort of enjoyed was Rabi Ribi, but I felt the same way as OP. The boss battles were fun and the obvious highlight, but the sidescrolling gameplay was boring tbh.

Metroid is a high quality product, most metroidvanias are just cashgrabs

said metroid is especially high quality, and also everything else is ultimately a derivative of metroid (including sotn) which I think often leads to a replication of the formula without much thought and therefore lacking gameplay.

      Anonymous

It's all about the level design. Metroid definitely has more engaging level design than most Castlevania games, which can be long hallways or jumping left and right on platforms to go up. The biggest flaw of the modern Castlevania games is the lack of platforming challenges, the only area that comes close in most games is the clock tower area. Metroid has hazardous terrain and you have to use enemies or other items to fling yourself off the landscape, you find secret areas by blasting porous terrain, and so on.

I feel like most Metroidvanias on Steam are too narrative-heavy and feel limited and cheap by means of using art assets that can only be puppeted around rather than animated, and even when animated feels like bullshit when a boss that takes up half the screen has no inbetweens for a heavy sweeping attack. And then the movement upgrades, unlike Metroid, can also be quite boring. You know what they are - the double jump, the air dash, some sort of magical tethering device. Even Blasphemous 2 is guilty of this when the original had more interesting upgrades in which the environment responded to your character, instead, like the blood platforms or the roots that would unfurl themselves toward you.

On the flipside, I can't stand precision platforming, like the developers are so in love with their movement upgrade they force you to use it in a way that's extremely situational and feels compartmentalized from the rest of the gameplay. Like seriously, if your movement upgrade is only to open doors or access a new area and doesn't tie into how your character already moved or how they fight, that's the worst of the worst.

I don't know why a lot of Metroidvanias insist on blocking areas off. Just make the enemies harder, and the stubborn players will keep going and be rewarded, and less skilled players will find an easier area first.

Afterimage. It's extremely obvious that it's a chink knockoff of Hollow Knight but it's extremely well done and the devs put in way more effort than what I expected from a FotM cash in.
I think that it is a strict upgrade to HK in every way excepting maybe the story which is about equal. If you enjoyed HK I can't imagine you not loving Afterimage. If you didn't like HK you probably won't like Afterimage.

Are there any good HK clones with reasonably sized areas and the ability to warp anywhere instead of relying on a shitty warp placement and a transport system?

        Anonymous

this is some bullshit, i played afterimage two months ago and it's not similar to hollow knight. it has bloated huge maps, not a lot of tight design, joke bosses you can facetank, there's really not much comparing the two

i'm not even a giga fan of hollow knight but calling this a knockoff is generous

Op, as usual is a homosexual. If you don't like metroidvanias, don't play them, play the games you like, there are literally hundreds of games coming out every single day, you'll have games you like coming out at least once a week.
I'll play all the metroidvanias. Especially if it's SotN. I'm playing Record of Lodoss War: Wonder Labyrinth right now, and I'm loving the dual element system, it makes boss fights much more interesting, with sudden shift patterns of offense and defense. Art direction is also top notch.

I'm playing Super Metroid now and the atmosphere is kino so the exploratory style suits. Also been playing SotN, which is also carried by its great design and music. Problem with these indies is they don't have enough design so it feels empty to explore. Had to give up on Hollow Knight because of boredom.

It's usually true that if a Metroidvania is developed by Japs, it's better than what the Muricans and Euroscum could make. There were also those 2 Yume Nikki fangames called Houchou Shoujo Gensoukyoku that were kinda neat.

Zero Mission is a pretty good entry point but Fusion works too.

you can just start with fusion if you like, when it comes to super metroid and the gba games in my opinion they're good and different enough that you can just play them in any order

I actually had these two games back when I was obsessed with collecting but the DS was already in full force and that made me have my GBA collection as a second plan backlog. I played all the Vanias but not a single Metroid as consequence.

        So Fusion it is. Playing

An Untitled Story is better than all of the games posted ITT.

I am disgusted by how easy it is for people to get tricked by the presentation, pretending that mediocre games are incredible just because they look good. Out of all the popular modern Metroidvanias, the first Blasphemous, Iconoclasts and Ender Lilies are the worst offenders of this, painfully mediocre games that are entirely carried by their artists and composers.

yes, exactly. if you manage to kill one before it teleports using an explosive bulb, it breaks the enemy and it will not drop one of the 3 items you need to get a healing item. i was punished for playing smart and trying to get the thing dead before it could flee, and it failed to spawn after i killed it no matter what i did, in either its original or final location along the path it normally flees

I'm 100% sure that's fixed now anon. Do you want the dev to go back and time and prevent this from occurring somehow?

this happened in march. i reported this to the dev. there was zero response. i refunded the game because i encountered a bug that would have required me to start a fresh save file and intentionally avoid it. as far as i can see there have been ZERO patches since it occurred. i have no idea why you feel so fricking compelled to excuse this but you should probably stop doubling down

it is literally part of the game that was added to it in order to realize a complete vision of the game by the developer and not being able to access content he put in the game with the intent of being accessed is a flaw, it's quite simple
