i've never played a "real" visual novel before. is this a good place to start?
for reference, the visual-novel type games i've played so far are
>danganronpa
>phoenix wright 1 and 2
>ai somnium files 1 and 2
>doki doki literature club

Sure, what genre are you interested in? Mystery? You can always scrape vndb for VNs then sorting by score.
just anything with a good, mature, intelligent story, really. i'm tempted to get this as it's on sale for like 60% off
>vndb
thanks, i'll check that site out. i guess i could always just emulate vns on my computer (looking to play this on the switch)
>Kana Imouto
looks sad but good. am i able to play it on either mac or switch?
>mac or switch
You should have mentioned that right at the start.
I really wouldn't know. I played it years ago.
You can use wine with a Mac, I think. Anyways maturity is kinda rare for VNs, even the ones regarded as the most serious like Kara no Shoujo can have some fricktard moments to shoehorn sex for no reason.
by maturity i don't mean, like, serious all the time. i think the ai series is pretty "mature" in its dark subject matter.
considering Robotics;Notes Elite right now, but i'm not sure
Try Planetarian. Even if you hate it it's gonna be over by then as it's rather short
can't hate that, it's fricking amazing
>Planetarian
thanks, put it on my wishlist.
not really a vn but i'm buying that cyberpunk bartender game, as i've wanted to play that forever. might get buried stars, too, as it's on sale. why did i wait so long to shop these games on sale?! i had two weeks!!
Try Raging Loop if you would rather a slightly older cast, the ending is quite poor but it was very good until then.
Try out Little Busters. It's great and the baseball minigame is fun
Be mindful that Prototype visual novels on Switch never go on sale tho
>just anything with a good, mature, intelligent story
I personally don't think that Full Metal Daemon Muramasa will ever be surpassed, it offers an incredibly nuanced story that deals with existentialism and morality with a cast of fleshed out and interesting characters. It also features some of the best worldbuilding there is.
midmasa is not even Top 10 Nitroplus vn. Overrated as frick for sure
If you want a good beginner's visual novel, try Kana Imouto
should I play raging loop?
It's pretty good till the end. The whole ride makes it worth playing, but be prepared to be slightly disappointed
Is root double good? I've heard no one talk about it and I have it in my steam library.
i'm not sure, it's just on sale so i'm curious about it
yeah kind of slim pickings eh? i think i might go for yu-no instead, but i'd rather play the original on my computer, ugh. the original art style is better, and i don't want to play a censored version. but i could shelve out $20 and play the official version on switch. decisions, decisions...
I liked it a lot, doesn't leave any questions hanging in the end.
It's pretty great. It's not as mindfricky as other Nakazawa works but it's wrapped up way better than the majority of those. Definitely a must play.
Start with any visual novel you want. I dont believe there are any that are more difficult than others. Just whatever interests you at the time
wright 1 and 2
>>ai somnium files 1 and 2
These are Adventure Games not VNs.
yeah, that's why i said i've never played a "real" visual novel. those games have visual novel elements but aren't "real" vns
hmmmm i think buried stars might be what i'm looking for. something darker
yeah, i'm going to go with this one while it's still on sale
it's suck though
this looks really good, but it's expensive as hell
This is amazing. One of the highest quality VNs. Definitely worth it.
yeah, it looks incredible. if it's ever on sale i'm snapping it up immediately
> 50+ hours long
yeah, the commitment level is just too high for a newcomer to the genre. an actual novel i'd have no problem putting upwards of 100 hours into, but with a visual novel, i'm just not sure
>you will be replaying one route at least twice after finishing it even if you follow a guide.
word
>There's a comprehensive guide available but there's no getting around this
yeah, see, i'd rather not use guides at all.
>In terms of actual content it's fairly mature and well done despite some flaws later on, it's just a significant time investment if you're not used to this kind of thing.
thanks for your input anon. i ended up going with buried stars instead, as it seems more digestible and interactive, and i liked the art style.
just for the heck of it, the games i ended up getting for the new years sale tonight are
>sine mora ex ($1)
>vVA-11 Hall-A ($13)
>we should talk. ($4.50)
>buried stars ($17)
>dusk diver ($4.50)
that should be enough games to keep me busy for a few months! nice.
You should be more willing to use guides for VNs. Some of them don't need it despite having many endings, but a lot of them are better experiences when you have a widely-agreed and tailored experience ready to go when you start them. It would be best in most cases if route order was enforced, but RD is an example of one where you should really just use the guide for the best experience. If you really want a great mystery that does not need a guide then play Remember11, but it's very complex. If you want something a bit more beginner friendly, 428.
thanks for the recommendations, i won't be afraid to use to guides in the future! i know 428 is supposed to be awesome, i only have a switch and a macbook though so my choices are quite limited. just booted up ai: the somnium files nirvana initiative, which i'm playing through right now, apparently kotaro uchikoshi wrote remember 11, too, so i'd definitely be interested in checking that out. unfortunately i have no way of playing it... oh wait, no, i could just emulate an english patched version of the psp version, sweet.
Root Double might be hard as a first real VN experience. It's 50+ hours long and the way that the epilogue flag system works means you will be replaying one route at least twice after finishing it even if you follow a guide. There's a comprehensive guide available but there's no getting around this (you can at least directly skip to choices instead of flying through text very fast). In terms of actual content it's fairly mature and well done despite some flaws later on, it's just a significant time investment if you're not used to this kind of thing.
Fata Morgana is a classic, more drama than mystery. And Umineko of course for similar mix, though mind it's long and less concise than FM. Both are really great.
If you crave murder mysteries closed circle kind of stuff , Zodiac Trials and Your turn to Die are cheap, although second is exceedingly edgy. If you want extra autistic mystery try Sekimeiya.
>Fata Morgana
too gothic for me
>Umineko
i don't think i can get that on switch
>Zodiac Trials
awful artwork
>Your turn to Die
this one looks pretty good, but it's not out on steam yet
>Sekimeiya.
this seems like the best recommendation, it's kind of expensive but i can play it on mac via steam. thanks
word, yeah i'll check out planetarium soon. just bought five games tonight lol
ZT looks awfully budget, they really did themselves a disfavor in marketing department, and there are fair number of typos as well. Clearly a single creator. I really liked the writing though.
YTTD is special as it's free, episodic (not yet finished, but close) and playable only in web browser I think.
Hope you have fun with Sekimeiya!
"real" visual novels don't exist, japs just call all of them adventure games
try something short like Planetarian or Saya no Uta
Try Steins;Gate, that's a good entry-level VN.
That would work, though I usually would recommend visual novel from yuzusoft to try
Pic related is senren banka, one of the easy one to try
Higurashi
Umineko
Ciconia
