I've never played a souls game before. Elden Ring looks interesting with the DLC coming up, would I enjoy it?

yes, best to play elden ring first so you aren't perpetually comparing the empty level design to the souls games.

i tried elden ring for the first time recently and didn't like it.
the challenging aspect of it (the main draw) was just frustrating instead of fun for me.
the controls were awful and i got to some pitch black cave with no torches and tried exploring and kept getting murdered by goblin ninjas and just said "eh frick this."

Souls games are interesting because they are retrospectively objectively terrible experiences with extremely low replayability (specially Elden Ring) and yet I keep buying and playing them. Maybe trying to scratch a dungeon crawler itch or something.

      Anonymous

Nothing says "low replayablity" like Elden Ring having 308 weapons to test out on 238 bosses.

        Anonymous

Which would mean something if any of the Souls games had meaningful variety within the playstyles of each weapon type, or even within the realm of weapons in general. Or if the RPG mechanics mattered, or if casting spells wasn't an entertaining event solely for individuals with lobotomies. Or if Elden Ring wasn't full of reskins and the sheer act of even trying something as simple as a boss rush wasn't obfuscated by terrible repeat run-thrus, navigating the SpeedTree wastes of the open world, and underdesigned "dungeons" like the cliffside which you are required to do, lest you want to navigate even more of the SpeedTree wastes for a dumbass medallion.
It's a terrible game to try and replay and the fact alone you made moves to disagree makes you look like at best, a massive moron, at worst a pathetic wienersucker.

The cliffside is fun. Everyone complains about how flat the world is and now you're complaining about one of the dungeons that actually have verticality.
          >lest you want to navigate even more of the SpeedTree wastes for a dumbass medallion
You can literally get the medallion in the first 15 minutes of the game.

I can't imagine playing Elden Ring as a first Souls game. It expects you to already have experience with other Souls games and designed both bosses and the general combat flow around subverting people's expectations from older games during combat to roll catch for example.

My character is RL230 and honestly it's pretty boring, should I make a new character? I am not sure how to make the game more interesting on subsequent playthroughs.

It's a really good game. A lot of the criticism comes from people who actually liked it but wanted something fixed so it could truly be one of the all time greats. I think it's a 9/10 for sure.
If it's your first, don't look anything up. Just know that big weapons are worth their weight.

      >big weapons are worth their weight.
Not necessarily for a beginner. The stagger and high damage is great to mow down hordes of enemies quickly but you need to have the timing down.

I think the most accessible weapon class is the greatsword/curved greatsword, both of which are quick with good movesets, ashes, and posture damage. You wouldn't think it with the term "greatsword" but the greatswords are pretty agile weapons in souls, and then the colossal greatswords are what you imagined them to feel like beforehand.

Bloodborne is still the FROM magum opus, but Elden Ring is the most impressive game i've ever played just based on principle. Its GTA Rockstar level status within the gaming landscape at this point, seeing as how FROM still actually releases games. To be fair at the end of the day its the 9th DLC for Demon's Souls

demons souls felt really fricking short, maybe a lot of ps3 games from that era felt short but demons souls especially felt short. probably had to do with it having a hub world

It is but the difficulty and optional content/pvp easily extend it. Plus when its your first souls game it was much more obtuse to learn mechanics at the time

  25. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

Everyone's first souls game is the hardest, because it takes some time to get used to the flow of the combat. Enemies exploit the gaps between your actions, and a little dregling can kill you in a few swipes of their puny dagger. The game does little to explain what's happening, or where to go, or how any of the mechanics work. So you're mostly left in the dark. The take away here, is to be patient. Patience is the number 1 attribute a player can have for these kinds of games. You will get the hang of things. Trust.

Elden Ring does do more to assist new players than the previous games. It keeps a record of the tutorials you've encountered in your inventory, so you can review them. And it has more tutorials in general too. Remember to read the flavor text for items, because useful information is placed there. You have to toggle the flavor text to see it. Also, pressing the select button on your status screen, will allow you to get descriptions for what all your stats do.
Another beginner friendly feature, is the free roaming. Unlike previous game where you had limited choices for where to go, this game gives you a much wider range. So if something is difficult, you can just ride off and try another location. Building up your strength elsewhere, and then coming back stronger.

So yes, Elden Ring is a good entry into the series. But it's still a souls game, so expect a steep learning curve.
