            Anonymous

That's because there are hit%/evade% stats that make it so attacks don't always land, especially uncharged ones. The slimes and tomato/eggplant men are a good example of enemies hard to hit with normal attacks.

Got myself softlocked on the first playthrough. Not even sure how it happened. I wound up on a screen that needed a prior item or trigger, but somehow missed it and wasn't allowed to return, nor could I progress.
Second playthrough ended up with glitched Bazooka ammo that never depleted, which was more interesting and not nearly as annoying.

Main memory is that the Dog can and will solo everything if you let it.

      >Second playthrough ended up with glitched Bazooka ammo that never depleted, which was more interesting and not nearly as annoying.
I think that happens if you have more than 99 shots.

        Anonymous

That's what I figured, as I remember having some odd amount like 146, whereas everything else capped at 99, though I couldn't get it to pass 99 on subsequent playthroughs. There must be only a few opportunities for the ammo to break that limit.

game is really good but has a couple design issues:

not enough content to level up every weapon
dog levels too quickly and becomes overpowered very early. should have had to level up each form seperately like weapons
alchemy system is cool but whats the point of having so many when youre better of just sticking to one and leveling the shit out of it.
by the time you get bazookas and all the special ammo the dog is a fricking deathstar, so why bother using them?

just some nitpicks. cant believe how awesome this game is. I remember being so excited for it, buying every magazine that had info on it, but then PlayStation came out and I traded my snes to funcoland.

played it for the first time earlier this year and plan on playing again.

oh, but frick that dog vent section. holy frick I wasted so much time lost in there.

        Anonymous

theres a bit of a cheat to make it easy included in the game. theres this area just outside the walls where theres like a dust devil that if you stand in you start spinning around. if you stay in there long enough you get transported to a hidden area where you find a 100 rice and spice

How would anyone have ever known to do that? There were all sorts of secrets like that in the game. and there were a lot of treasures/rewards that would be better if you managed to get them already through other means. like there was a chest in the colesseum that would have a good helm, but if you already had that good helm when you opened the chest it would give you a better helm, and if you already had that it would give you an even better helm, and if you had that itd give you the best helm, and if you had that it would give you an artifact that you wouldnt be able to get until the next section which was a pain to trade for

There was also that weird dance you could do to end up with all of the key items that said they improved your stats but there was never any real confirmation that I know of. If you didn't do it right, you'd end up permanently trading away or being unable to buy several of them, not to mention the one that seems to be completely randomly and extremely rarely given to you by an npc in the dark forest section of the medieval region. I think it was a second chance at another one from earlier in the game, which meant you could safely give up the first one to get something else that was a one shot - provided you luck out and the forest NPC shows up for you at all. It's been a long time.

I don't care if you like the game man, I like middling games too because they tick the right boxes.

It's an objective fact the reception of the FF13 series damaged the value of the Final Fantasy series, caused internal debates within Square over the direction of the series, and that they had to make public statements about its unexpectedly low review scores. It's one of the most controversial games to come out of the 7th generation of consoles.

FFXIII's approach to linearity has nothing in common with the design of its predecessors and a lot more in common with the "hallway shooters" of the era like Call of Duty and its dozens of clones, which is why that term is so widespread.

And that issue brings down the entire game. It's hard to get behind the story because cocoon feels alien to the player, all of the important context is in the games glossary in the main menu because it can't illustrate it via gameplay. You never feel like an outsider or terrorist the way Avalanche does in FF7 because without towns to speak of the game has to tell you you're oppressed in scripted cutscenes instead of depicting it through npc dialogue. Without a game world to break up pacing the game can only vary up gameplay by trickling out combat features every chapter, and while the systems do come together into something enjoyable it takes so long to even reach basic shit like toppling and party switching that the reputation of it being a 20 hour tutorial is rightfully earned. I don't even understand why it bothers having a successor to the sphere grid when it offers zero character customization.

The entire game is compromised by the cuts it had to make because of the expenses of hd visuals, and it feels embarrassing compared to other RPGs of that generation which had the foresight to not aim for movie level CGI since that's unsustainable for that genre. Square claiming they were inventing a new genre and that it was never the teams vision to deliver on a traditional jrpg is a blatant lie when we know they were cut because of technical issues with the engine they were using at the time, ones they resolved with the games sequels.

The same arguments about the game get regurgitated all the time because they're all immediately obvious from playing the games first 3 chapters and well documented, it's like arguing about Metroid: Other M or DmC. There's no point.

I could forgive the linearity if the characters were better.
                Lightning - Mopey b***h
Pink haired girl - Annoying kawaii uguu type
White-haired kid - Pussy, "Muh mom"
                Black guy - "Muh son"
                Dyke - Dyke
                Wigger - "I'm a JRPG Hero!"

I don't think that's a new take. A lot of people like it despite its flaws.

Its only passable qualities are the music and aesthetics. Battles are completely braindead, even by FF standards.

This game was pretty cool though. I really liked the gimmick of the dog changing forms depending on the era of the area you were in. Plus it's better than the OG Secret of Mana anyways.
    Then again

Plz don't bully the Secret of Evermore devs, they took it really personally.

Also, the dev has given you permission to emulate his game and to patch it.

It's really not their fault as much as it is the marketing departments.
You can't blame people for considering it a replacement for Trials of Mana when they were coy about the games existence and framed Evermore as a successor in ads and through the games final title. These days we know they were completely unrelated projects and how expensive it would be to localize a game of Trials' size but that information wasn't readily available in 1995

I think if the game was a year earlier or later, or on something like the Genesis, the conversation surrounding it would be completely different. But it's a 7/10 game that ended up being the victim of poor timing, sandwiched between titles like Mana, Chrono Trigger and Earthbound it didn't compare favorably to.

I've never played this game but I always remember its cool art from an old magazine. I always remember this butler dude because he looks like my uncle.
