Xbox 360 had the best exclusive deals, a ton of first-party must-haves and bought every JRPG they could get their hands on. If not for the RRoD they would've dominated over Sony that gen.
Then fricking Mattrick happened and just gutted everything good they had within his first year and tanked the brand forever with the XBone presentation.
Phil just seems like a yes man who doesn't try to force anything from the studios until some upper management tells him to save money somehow.

        Xbox One was a mistake.

Nobody buys a console to stream movies or watch TV or be a living room PC. You buy a console to play games, and Xbox doesn't want to focus on giving you games.

For me, the game pass is a good idea and a proper way to offer something to the customer that the others don't. If it's profitable at all, that's a different matter, but it is something.

But as a game publisher? They're absolutely clueless. Phil Spencer said that they just can't produce games like nintendo or sony after they have tried so hard but the thing is that they just lack anyone that really "cares" about videogames in management positions. If Phil Spencer, as laid back and nice as he is, has been following Starfield's development and he couldn't tell that the game had absolutely nothing new to offer in relation to how much it cost to develop, then it's not fricking use.

You don't even need fricking Satoru Iwata as a CEO, but someone that's just a bit more knowledgeable and invested about what's being done wouldn't hurt and I'm not sure they have tried. I mean, what the frick were they about anouncing a sequel to PERFECT FRICKING DARK OF ALL THINGS? Perfect Dark was great but what the frick is there to be done with it today? Without the original dev team around even.

Gamepass is just the same bait as every other subscription service. The only reason it exists is to drive its competition out of business so that it can fleece the end user unopposed.
The only reason Xbox exists now is to be a permanent token foot in the door and a tax writeoff, same as pretty much every other big thing where Microsoft failed to become a middleman or saboteur.

      >Spencer said that they just can't produce games like nintendo or sony after they have tried so hard
Well that's just a bald-faced fricking lie right there. Xbox hasn't actually tried in many years, certainly never under Philly Tubbybreasts' tenure. They mistake big spending for inherently being synonymous with big effort. They keep wanting to turn Xbox into a turnkey operation and expect to do so by lazily throwing aimless but huge sums of money in all directions. The first half of the 360 was the closest thing they ever had to a turnkey operation, but guess what? That required
      >Sony to literally nearly kill their entire company with the PS3's early era
      >Nintendo to essentially wholly exit the regular console-gaming space that generation with a new focus on hypercasual nongamers and non-competitive hardware specs
And they STILL managed to flub and cause the 360 to come in last place. The 360 was the time to coast and not rock the boat, and NOW is the time to rock the boat and change shit. They've had it backwards.

Perfectly summed up. I think the always online fiasco really fricked them over. Sony instantly capitalized on it, made PR videos about "trading games" and even brought it up at E3. Now it doesn't matter anymore, Xbox dun goofed and people are moving to PC because consoles have become a soulless DRM front with some of the same problems people were using consoles to get away from in the first place.

          >I think the always online fiasco really fricked them over.
It did a ton of damage, but the real problem is that they did NOTHING of note afterwards to change course from it. The PS3 nearly destroyed Sony and they still salvaged THAT mess, because they actually noticed what was wrong and actually applied their knowledge to improve matters. Though honestly Microsoft were probably a decent help at the end of the gen too, with how badly Mattrick destroyed the 360's appeal as the default non-wagglan console by trying to make it the next wagglan console.

Microsoft had their own niche with the dudebro audience and they did really well with it. Then they decided they wanted Sony's audience, the mainstream "casuals". And Sony's audience saw no reason to switch, they offered nothing new. Nothing Sony couldn't just do themselves. Now they have no dudebros and no casuals.

I agree with everything you said, except the part about Perfect Dark.

If Xbox needs more games that people want to play, to generate excitement and cater to fans - especially if those fan-bases are smaller, then Perfect Dark fits. People love that series. Same thing with games like Hexen and Crash Bandicoot. Think of PD as being in line with Metroid and Pikmin; it doesn't sell that well, however it does make fans stick with the platform - which is exclusively an Xbox problem. They just needed to, you know, actually develop and release it.

I've been wanting Prey 2 really bad, but nope. Sorry gay, it didn't generate 18 bazillian dollars.
Hi-Fi Rush 2? Silly homosexual. Have you seen the profit margins for that trash?

Nintendo hasn't cancelled Pikmin or Metroid, even though those are niche games. Why? Because the people running the company believe in those series and know they have their fans. Now Starfox on the other hand...

But Perfect Dark was a shooter on the N64 and its a genre that has been done to death a gazillion times since then.

It's appeal was the gameplay, which essentially was being a good console 3D shooter, but that now is trivial. What's exactly the appeal of a new Perfect Dark if the only thing we get is a CG cinematic and the warranty that the same team will never work on it? What's so unique about the Perfect Dark IP that we're sure we'll get? Because if it's the story or the universe then frick off.

Gates wanted Microsoft to "own your living room" and the Xbox was a trojan horse to get under your TV. If there was a better way to take over your living room they would ditch video games and move on to that, they could not care less about the medium. It's just the means to an end.

Game Pass has ended up being a double edged sword. All that it's done is devalue games so people don't want to pay full price for them. Sony copying that model led to games selling less on Playstation as well. Now with publishers being bought out and studios under them shut down while the costs of games rises exponentially due to the AAA arms race between Sony and Microsoft, we are watching the industry crash in real time.

        Anonymous

Literally all of the current economic turmoil in the industry is the result of overexpansion during COVID. The market for its entire history was always at a steady level of growth, over time more and more people were getting into video games as it naturally rose to the largest entertainment industry. The thing is, when we had the lockdowns during the pandemic, across all sectors of entertainment you saw just fricking massive spikes of growth as you suddenly have the majority of the population stock indoors with nothing to do. Basically, imagine 10 years worth of growth in terms of consumers happening over the span of just 1, for the duration of the pandemic that growth held on, thats why literally everyone in the games industry was suddenly breaking records every year in terms of growth and profit.

Because of this, pretty much every western tech company went on massive hiring sprees, trying to capitalize on this spike with the assumption that even after the pandemic those peaks will remain and you would just see further linear growth. What actually happened is instead of further growth, the industry is contracting back down to pre-covid levels, so now you have all these companies scrambling because they massively overhired for a demand that simply isn't there, I think it's fricking stupid to close Tango, but this isn't even an MS exclusive issue, its happening across all western publishers.

Game Pass on paper could work, the catalog just isn't there, and the platform launched too early to meet the demands it needs, and acquisitions were made too quickly, which puts even further pressure for rapid growth that just is not being seen.

This entire industry is currently in a kettle of boiling water from this misplay, and that kettle is currently screaming.

They are astonishingly stupid. All they had to do was either make exclusives, or make the Xbox series generation windows PCs—with first party integrations and top price performance at the entry level it would be a runaway success simply from people being able to use steam on the side. They also wouldn't need their split services of pc console and ultimate which would improve branding. Instead we have this Brewster's Millions plot. Though to be fair, I doubt Phil Spencer is really holding the reins at this point. I expect Nadella has dispensed ultimatums as the ignorant overlord. Phil says enough that makes sense to make me think his power has been divested since nobody would spend billions on these assets simply to crash their value unless there was another greedy hand pushing for short term gains.

frankly at this point my theory is that the Acti merger has turned Microsoft into this state of mass head empty for the sake of making their revenue go into overdrive, and suddenly both hands, legs and head have no idea what they're doing as everyone's practically fighting each other on how to pursue this. and now they have the Activision execs in the well, sending notices and suggestions up the chain and probably trying to rot Microsoft from the inside-out worse than they already were rotted since the 90's.

    >What is the point of Xbox?

The original point was to get "into the living room". In the late 90's/early 00s there was a vision that tech companies had that people were going to ultimately have a device sit in their living rooms that would receive all of their media content. Microsoft desperately wanted to be that device and take a cut of every movie/TV show/videogame/song you bought on that device. They saw videogames as the "trojan horse" of getting into the living room so they set up the Xbox brand

As time went on, that vision of the "all in one living room device" kind of fell apart with the rise of smartphones. Luckily MS had found a different value in the console space; subscriptions. Locking people into Xbox Live Gold was a massively profitable for them.

As time went on, they evolved the subscription model from XBL Gold, to Games With Gold, to GamePass. They are now focused on creating software and selling it to you via a subscription. On the surface; this makes sense; Microsoft rose to power as a software company so it makes sense the Xbox division should be focusing on making and selling software. The problem is Windows never required you to buy a Microsoft PC to run. Microsoft was happy to sell you software and have you run it on whatever the frick you wanted. Xbox still having a foot in the hardware race (that they fully admit they've lost) while at the same time trying to make money on the software they produce is counter-intuitive.

What is the point of Xbox? Apparently even Microsoft doesn't know.

That was called the "one box" theory. It was Sony's idea, the Playstation was their attempt at it. MS did what they do best and copied it. But like you said the theory turned out to be incorrect, the box itself is irrelevant. It's whoever owns the store that makes the money. Apple, Google, Valve, they got it right. Now Sony and MS are stuck making boxes that they don't want to make and trying to retrofit new purposes onto them. They'll both be out of the hardware game in a gen or two.

Their first attempts were half assed because all they wanted is to throw a branch into Sonys wheel. But in the last years videogames had become the most important form of entertainment and MS higher ups decided they want the bigger slice of the cake.

    Xbox is changing

From inside info: Zenimax already had plans to close bot the Austin studio and Tango. Most of the devs that made Austion games left, so it lost all the value it had, and the financial status was just bad. Tango it's kind of same story, while the did not yet release catastrophic game, they were in negative situation under Zenimax, and under xbox they did not change that. Microsoft didn't even try to sell them, because as a development studio, they lost value after Shinji Mikami and tons of devs left. Machine games is in familliar situation but now that they work with Todd on Indiana Jones game they will have a last chance to join with BGS main team as a sub-division.

But Xbox Game studios are a different story. For now, Rare is save, because Sea of Thives is selling hot-cakes, for now atleast. 343i is save because Halo even with all the hate brings money and the last save studio is The Coalition. World's Edge is a bit 70/30, because it's the studio that Microsoft heads love. Obsidian is a bit worrysome situation. Avowed internal scoring is not so great and the only game that is kind of saving them for now is Grounded. But after Avowed they will be forced to become 2nd big main BGS team under Todd control. They already have a working prototype of TOW2 in Creation engine 2 and the team is loving it.

Other studios are in much bigger troubles. Ninja Theory is betting everytihing on Hellblade 2 but the best option would be to do the Toys for bob situation, while closing them down isn't really something Microsoft would want, because a lot of talanted people are there, they want to force them into become sub-division but head of NT is not liking that idea.

Compulsion Games is taking all the bets to South of Midnight, Double Fine same story as Ninja Theory, The Initiative 100% closing down and perfect dark 100% cancled. inXile Entertainment will try to become 3rd main BGS team. Turn 10 & Playground Games save but they will just become Forza Horizon studio after Fable.

Tango's been riding Biohazard 4's sucess since Mikami made Psycho Break 1. EVERY game since those two released sold less than the previous one (even Psycho Break 2) and it's partially because Mikami stepped back and wanted to mentor folks.

I do not know how people thought Tango was going to survive, especially when Mikami left a year ago. They had NOTHING. It was a Clover 2.0 situation.

They genuinely don't, they want to make money by selling live service games with micro-transactions that they can sell DLC for and keep the same game going for decades.
They could just make games that people play and finish pretty easily but they don't want that, they think that there's a market for infinite live service games.
They saw shit like Netflix and thought that individual games should run as a subscription service somehow not understanding that there is a financial crisis on the horizon and due to wages not keeping up with inflation for decades people cannot afford to run infinite subscriptions for multiple $70 games.

You can trace Xbox's downfall to them putting everything on PC, and every side-step since then -- Game Pass, putting games on other consoles, ect ect -- has just got them further from any sort of definable mission. Yes, exclusivity means not everyone gets to play every game. But they also result in purposeful, quality games, that benefit from developers working on unique custom-designed hardware.

Xbox has so, so, so much talent under their umbrella. If they just focused, established strong central leadership, and used their talent to their maximum potential, they'd have a thriving platform. But they don't want to do that. Xbox is the trust fund kid coasting on daddy's (Microsoft's) money. They want to game the system by buying or "disrupting" their way to victory. Meanwhile, when it comes to actual game development, they take this laissez faire "eh, do what you want" attitude and pump out games that either aren't very good, or are good, but too niche to succeed. Then when games fall short because leadership provided no guidance, they get upset and fire people.

I'm inclined to disagree. Personally I think it's extremely convenient to have a console that also doubles as my streaming/movie device and I've felt this way since the PS2 doubled as a DVD player. It's convenient and effective.

Sony has a coherent strategy most of the time though even if you don't like their games, except for when they try to chase trends like with PS Move or PS Portal. A ton of people buy PS to have access to stuff like God of War and Spiderman, or just as a vehicle to play CoD or FIFA.

MS doesn't even seem to have a strategy. They've canceled a shitload of games and canned studios when they need content for gamepass. That's what the guy's asking. What's the point of all of this if they're not doing much with it.

    https://www.ign.com/articles/phil-spencer-and-the-battle-for-xboxs-soul
    >I spoke to two former longtime Xbox employees, separately, and both lamented the current state of the business. One told me, prior to this week’s awful studio closures, “I had lengthy conversations with a bunch of Xbox founders, and we all came to the same conclusion: it’s no longer Xbox, but Microsoft Gaming.”
    >The other chatted with me at length after the Bethesda bloodbath, and believes Xbox is now too big to quickly or easily get its house in order. “There is just too much surface area. You have, effectively, three huge companies at play and Microsoft never really finished [the] integration with Bethesda. [And] Activision is like three times the size Xbox was.” They added, “Xbox 360 launched with a few hundred people. Last I heard Xbox is now almost 30,000 people.”
    >And that growth has led to, in this Xbox veteran’s opinion, increased oversight and meddling from further up the Microsoft food chain. “The reason this seems so inconsistent with previous Xbox leadership team statements is that these decisions probably aren't being made by Phil. This is all getting dictated by [Microsoft CEO] Satya [Nadella] and [Microsoft CFO] Amy Hood, and it all stems from the Activision acquisition.”
Xbox is in a paradox of dying but also becoming too big for its own good. Microsoft can’t view Xbox as this small division of gaming dudebros anymore, it’s bigger than windows now, so in a way Xbox is pointless because it’s not even Xbox anymore

the xbox (read: DirectXbox) was a scheme to make sure developers would keep using the microsoft developed API for years to come when the ps2 was becoming too popular (remember how many ps2 games didn't get pc ports until much much later if ever, like god hand)

from the ps4 onwards every console has been using x64 architecture and the DirectX API so xbox has long since served its purpose, its just a corpse being paraded because kids buying xbox live used to be profitable

      Anonymous

Correct except in some minor instances. DirectX is no longer relevant because AMD supplies the chips to Sony and Microsoft. NVidia is locked with Nintendo. The Xbox console family keeps decreasing in sales ceiling every generation.
      >Xbox 360 sold 81 million
      >Xbox One sold 54-sh million
      >Xbox Series S sold 14 million
      >Xbox Series X sold 7 million
And yes, that means X sold less than the Wii U. Xbox Series consoles sold less than the PSP and PS Vita. Xbox Series consoles and Xbox One consoles combined sold less than the Nintendo Switch. PS4 outsold the Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles combined. PS5 outsold the Xbox Series on a ratio of 2 to 1 without real games. The demographic of people who liked the Xbox 360 are dying out every generation and Xbox leadership can't draw in zoomers to buy their DRM always online consoles.

Nintendo is sailing around just fine. Playstation would be in real danger because they're incompetent lazy motherfrickers but the Xbox team is led by the blind and the glue eating dipshits like Phil Spencer so this is another free win for Sony.

Which is why the Xbox-PC hybrid console thing is insane. It would be a very high end product on release and Microsoft is not interested in growing the market. Or rather, Microsoft has been shown the consumer rejected them on the market. So the PC/Console Xbox theorycrafting thing will never be sold at a loss so it will be fricking expensive. Isn't that basic business? All the subscription services are doing it too, squeeze the paypigs. Netflix and Disney+ upped the costs to deal with dwindling demographic. Xbox's next hardware, if it even exists, will be squeezing their dwindling userbase even more.

Pray tell if the next Xbox is a PC hybrid, everyone will just buy games off Steam which is not money Microsoft ever sees. Only way they can win is to sell the console hybrid at a higher cost but PC gamers aren't flocking to buy a semi DRM console thing when they have their PCs. Xbox PC is not a silver bullet ever.

          Here's my take.
          >Xbox One disaster, Phil Spencer convinces Satya Nadella with a roadmap to stay in the hardware race
          >The roadmap consisted of Xbox Series consoles being a fresh start
          >All Phil needed to do was build the bricks and foundation for that console generation to be all digital and all renting GamePass
          >Satya Nadella agreed with Phil's roadmap and gave him his allowance to go shopping for Bethesda and Activision with the deadline to turn things around in 2023
          >Starfield hits as the exclusive hail mary Phil Spencer bet his reputation and deal on
          >Todd Howard ships a wet fart, Satya Nadella says Microsoft is in direct control of Xbox starting in 2024 and anything that hurts the brand doesn't matter, he wants his money back
Every decision as of late that hurts Xbox consoles doesn't matter, it's pure revenue stream back up. Whatever israeli accounting tricks Phil employed to fool Satya Nadella it ain't working anymore, Microsoft Sirs CEO is not amused by Phil's parlor tricks. I think Hellblade 2 will come out on PS5 then the studio NinjaTheory is being shuttered this year. Every Xbox game being worked on this year will be on PS5 next year and all will be multiplatform on release. Satya Nadella is not fricking around, he just wants his money back from Phil Spencer. The craziest thing is that someone as smart as Phil Spencer bet the entire roadmap of Xbox as a hardware on Bethesda Softworks delivering a space Skyrim with Starfield.

It depends on where their goalpost was. Starfield moved the most game pass subs in the service’s history in its launch, but if a subscription is the core of the platform it’s as fickle as someone’s whim to continue subscribing. Phil was right when he said one game won’t make people move from PS to Xbox because one good game isn’t enough, they need multiple years of hits and breakout IPs like the mid to late 2000’s

“We’re not in the business of out-consoling Sony or out-consoling Nintendo,” Spencer said. “There isn’t really a great solution or win for us. And I know that will upset a ton of people, but it’s just the truth of the matter that when you’re third place in the console marketplace and the top two players are as strong as they are, and have in certain cases a very, very discrete focus on doing deals and other things that kind of make being Xbox hard for us as a team, [and] that’s on us, not on anybody else.” He added: “I see commentary that if you just built great games everything would turn around. It’s just not true that if we go off and build great games then all of a sudden you’re going to see console share shift in some dramatic way. But this idea that if we just focused more on great games on our console that somehow we’re going to win the console race, I think doesn’t really lay into the reality of most people.”

“I see a lot of pundits out there that kind of want to go back to the time where we all had cartridges and discs and every new generation was a clean slate and you could switch the whole console share. That’s just not the world that we are in today. There is no world where Starfield is an 11 out of 10 and people start selling their PS5, that’s not going to happen.”

One of the reasons why MS sucks dick at making games is because of their hiring practices. They love having contractors instead of actual employees to save money and not pay for employee benefits, so they'll hire a bunch of them for 18 months at a time and then let them go. If the contractor actually enjoyed their job and wants to reapply, they'll have to wait another 6 months or so to apply to an Xbox studio again. It probably works for QA or games that have very short dev times, but in practice it just means that the next contractor is just trying to figure out where the last person left off and so on. So as a result they just never keep talent and some of their projects like Halo Infinite/Forza Motorsport reboot just turn into fricking trainwrecks.
It also doesn't help that for the most part, the execs that run MS studios really don't know what the frick they're doing. They probably make decisions based on their what their marketing department says, like their decision to make Halo Infinite into an open world/live service game. They don't really have executives that have experience making games who can tell them
      >This is fricking stupid. Our team is inexperienced in this field, we can't compete with X, you already have Studio Y making an open world project too, and you hired us because of Z in the first place. Let us just stick with what works.

I just find it wildly amusing that people like you and me b***hed out Microsoft for doing this. At the time we thought Xbox would be like an Italian pizza chain takeover or a train monopoly by swallowing everything in their path. But just within 5 years of buying Bethesda and Activision the whole Microsoft Xbox Gaming division blows up on the hardware team and they're 1-2 landmines away from becoming a 3rd party. By eating Activision, Microsoft has now become Activision and their brand is so largely toxic they might be better off rebranding as Activision Microsoft Gaming.

It's all wildly fascinating they're sabotating themselves while Sony, Nintendo, and Valve look in awe at Phil Spencer. Gabe Newell probably thinks he has a chance at taking 3rd place away from Xbox with the next SteamDeck.

The AAA crash is pretty much happening now as we speak. Tons of investors went into vidya assuming the high growth and demand during COVID would never die, and now that it did they're slowly pulling out. It also doesn't help that AAA games require more time and money to come out due to an increased focused on muh graphix, which would still be excusable if it werent for the fact that the AAA industry is bleeding talent like crazy. So now you get games like Suicide Squad or Forza Motorsport 2023 which both look worse and play worse than the studio's prior efforts.

Redfall had a lot more problems than that. They hired a studio known for making immersive sims, and then their first task after being absorbed by Microsoft wasn't to play to their strengths, but to continue making their shitty co-op shooter that nobody on the team was enthusiastic about.

The ESGbux dried up. Now the "AAA" devs have to make games that people actually want to play and they don't know how.

Nice portfolio of games. Also available on PC. And sometimes available on PS5 and Switch.

Hellblade 2 is a feminist mental health walking sim game with an ugly woman. Digital only release. 50 dollars only. Yeah baby those Microsoft internal mock reviews gave this a 60% review before release with this intense marketing blowout Xbox is doing for it. I doubt even the people on GamePass rent slavery even know Hellblade 2 comes out in 2 weeks.

    >repeated the same terrible mistakes for over a decade
That's untrue. Xbone flopped because they opened up with always-online digital games. That didn't bite them next gen as their competitor did the exact same thing before them but marketed it instead of marketing against it.
Series S/X aren't doing as well as PS5 in terms of consoles moved yet Microsoft is actually making a larger net profit than Sony, according to numbers submitted to a court of law by said companies. You can't really say "the same mistakes" when the original mistake was rushing headlong into "you will own nothing" before it's competitors were also ready to rush into it.

Infinite unironically killed Halo. the series is dead because of Microsoft's incompetence. 343 Industries should've been axed after Halo 5.

Is this even an Xbox issue?
    >Sony has been putting down AA tier games, closing studios like Japan Studio and focusing on big AAA games only
    >S-E just canceled 140m dollars of in-development games to refocus on larger less risky projects
    >Ubisoft is an AC/Far Cry machine, and puts popular open world stuff in basically all other IPs
Even before Microsoft, Activision was a CoD machine since Skylanders died.

It is, with the exception of Sony your other examples are 3rd party publishers. Microsoft has been banking on promises that they'll deliver on their acquisitions with games, they haven't released even one next-gen from the Series S/X console reveal lineup. EA, Ubisoft, Square can all frick around and die but they're not console makers. You have to understand the entire Xbox digitally purchases ecosystem is dependent on Xbox consoles existing. Sony's been putting out <5 exclusive games and they closed studios, Xbox has put out negative exclusive games and closed their only good studios.

The studios affected are all from Bethesda/Zenimax, no one is disputing that Activision is were studios go to die as Call of Duty adjacent support teams. The optics of 343 Industry being alive while good 1st Xbox teams get the axe are appalling.

They just keep hurting themselves and there's no one else to blame. It's not a management thing at this point, everyone in that company is just moronic. The average IQ of a corporate wagie is definitely sub 80 in the current year.
