The backlash of Raiden replacing Snake was so huge that MGS3's sales were way down iirc. Then they had to bring back the whole crew for MGS4 for it to be a major success again.
It sold 3 million within a week of it's worldwide release, it would have easily broken 20 million or more if the reception wasn't so bad towards Raiden
Looking back now, they could've just made Pliskin the MC and a separate person from Solid (kinda like what Venom is to BB) and not create Raiden at all. Nothing would've changed much storyline wise.
It's because Kojima intended to end the series with 2, killing Ocelot and having Snake be playable for half of the story. But due to budget cuts they removed it and repackaged the cut content for MGS4. However due to MGS3 they had to change everything because to address all of the retcons MGS3 had
MGS2 was the most groundbreaking game of the century and defined the generation of gaming, it was so technologically advanced it made the original obsolete
The tanker mission is the peak of the entire series but everything after is mediocre until you get to the very very end in Arsenel gear. 80% of the game is shit only the tanker and then the very end is kino
Ground Zeroes doesn't control as well as Phantom Pain, does anyone else notice this? Snake is not as responsive or buttery as in PP. I feel like they really refined controls or the Fox Engine or whatever between GZ and PP so it makes it hard to play GZ despite the fun level design.
MGS2 was the most groundbreaking game of the century and defined the generation of gaming, it was so technologically advanced it made the original obsolete
MGS2 is massively overrated, not fun to play. 1 and 3 mog it ( 1 is the best game in series by far )
I still to this day say that if the entire game had consistently maintained the quality of the Tanker chapter - with the attention to detail that chapter had combined with the atmosphere, music, level layout, etc. - it would be the consensus GOAT video game. Like Jordan or Brady, we wouldn't even be debating it. #1 would be solidified, we'd just be debating what was the runner up.
>The original plot of MGS2 revolved around nuclear weapon inspections in Iraq and Iran and had Solid Snake trying to stop the Metal Gear while it was located on an aircraft carrier, in a certain time limit, while trying to stop Liquid Snake and his group. However about six months into the project the Middle East began to heat up again and they decided that they couldn’t make a game with such a plot. The tanker in the released game is based on this original plot. The game would end with Snake fighting Ocelot and Raiden fighting Solidus, meaning both of them would die.
>Once Snake joined in, the camera was meant to go into split-screen, showing what he was doing while you were playing as Raiden.
>In the Metal Gear Saga documentary, the tanker section would’ve taken place on an aircraft carrier instead. The opening section would’ve taken place during a nuclear inspection between Iraq and Iran, capping off with Snake trying to stop Metal Gear on an aircraft carrier before Liquid/Ocelot and his group could get it. This was changed 6 months into development out of concerns that the situation in the Middle East was a little too sensitive to make light of at the time. The Grand Game Plan had North Korea as an alternative before Kojima and co moved the carrier to New York, and then turned the carrier into a tanker.
>The guards were meant to have their own personalities, and their AI beefed up to be more realistic. Injured guards were also meant to be sent to an infirmary, where they’d return to their post after a while with a bandage over their injuries. The player would’ve been able to blow these sections up to keep this from happening. Instead, injured guards just inject themselves with painkillers
More >Doc would’ve turned up after Raiden encountered Emma. His expertise in marine life would’ve turned up when you’d go to the Aquarium Strut. It would’ve been hidden at the bottom of one of the Struts (likely Strut D- originally a Command Room than a Sediment Pool), and it would’ve been an optional place to visit. You could just watch the fish, called Doc for information on them, and even use a mini-sub to explore the sea bed and take photos.
>Not that you’d have much time to talk to Doc or watch fish after you meet Emma. In the final game, Raiden’s on a strict time limit to reach the Shell 1 Core. Once you reached the Core computer room, you would’ve had to defend the position from another charging horde of enemies as Snake treated Emma’s wounds. Since it’s a closed area, you likely would’ve had to use claymores and C4 to act as traps.
>Raiden and Snake were going to dive into the ocean and swim down towards Arsenal Gear once the Big Shell was scuppered. Otacon wouldn’t have been able to save all the hostages either. 50-60 of them would die during the Shell’s destruction, and their bleeding bodies would’ve attracted sharks for you to either avoid or fight. In the final game, you can’t fight underwater, but you were going to be able to use an speargun to move around, grab items, and fight Chinaman, Aquatic Troops, and the sharks. The game would feature a underwater playable graveyard
>During the game, Raiden would’ve suffered flashbacks to his true past, including memories of his father ‘Fanshawe’. He would’ve been killed by an accidental discharge while on a hunting trip, and he would’ve had the same face as Solidus. This would turn out to be a false memory implanted into Raiden’s head by the Patriots. Kojima had initially given Raiden’s surname as ‘Brannigan’, but this was dropped early into development.
The final product for MGS2 was less than HALF of what was originally intended

They had absurd amounts of cut content. T

This would have been the undisputed greatest game of all time, even surpassing Ocarina of Time

And if that didnt hurt, MGS3, as good as it was, was supposed to be a PS3 game with similar mechanics to MGS4

MGS2 finished would be the canonical end of the series, and yet with MGS3 on the PS3 you could easily set up at least 2 more mainline entries as sequels to MGS3 but prequels with Peace Walker being MGS4 and then Phantom Pain being MGS5

I think I would've preferred female vamp, and all the AI characters to what we got in the end
and everyone was disappointed with it until 2016
>Outsold both

And MGS4 was a steaming pile because of it. Raiden whiners ruined the end of Snake's storyline.

How did you even make this up in your head and then type it? What weird lies.

The two peaks of the series are the Tanker mission and Ground Zeroes, which played the same exact role in both 2 and V.

Not interested in the water levels though
So glad that 2 is the best but people try and pretend it isn't. Imagine a world where 2 is behind 1 or 3, not your fantasy but a real fucking thing.

I added numbers to both of those games
