USB ports doubled as controller ports and so 4 ports at the front was an easy way to advertise/guarantee 4 player compatible. The PS2 had 2 controller + 2 USB so 4 USB isn't really that much when you take into account peripherals.
The 2 on the back are for OtherOS linux support. That's a keyboard + mouse port. Alternatively for an external hard drive.

Wii U Pro Controller's battery lasts playing a frickin jrpg from start to finish on one charge. If it somehow manages to run out just plug it in. Realistically you won't ever have to do that because when the battery warning light goes on it has still maybe 10 hours of play time left.

Then later you put the drained ones in a charger so you'll have another fresh set the next time that happens.
I use my dualsense wired on PC. Wish it could be the other way around but nooo if you pair it to the PS5 again you have to remove it from your Bluetooth devices on the PC and re-pair. Imagine, 2022 and not having a USB C cable that reaches across your living room.

honestly I fear that mine will die at any moment. Just get a good enough PC to emulate 99% of the titles you want to play and save the ps3 for when you absolutely have to play something that you can't properly emulate.
It'll cost some money, but you can get your PS3 delidded and some capacitors changed and that should keep the YLOD away.
